I think you missidentified the cause of death. I noticed how skinny he was already in the last video. I know you mentioned you try not to overfeed them but garther snakes are active foragers that need to eat a lot and often in comparison to some other snake species. It takes a lot of energy out of snakes body to start the digesting process (especially after longer time since last feeding) and takes some time before they start getting nutrients from the food item itself. If you feed a substantial food item to a skinny snake, it can kill them. Digesting rodent this size would not kill a healthy garter. People need to hear this.. not to be afraid to feed their garter snakes. We are all learning and sadly, stuff like this happens. Where is life, there is death as well.

Correct, garter snakes have a higher metabolism than most snakes in the hobby and should eat smaller meals more frequently. The issue in this case was not just the size of the meal but the health of the animal (too skinny) post brumation.

My condolences. Having worked at veterinary clinics over the years I know that no matter what kind of pet you have it is always hard to lose them. Of course I have had to euthanize my own beloved pets. A veterinarian told me once that my pets had a very fulfilling life and that bought me a tiny bit of comfort. I know you work hard to give your pets the same. Take care.

Sorry for your loss. Shit happens, as long as you learn from it, you will do better. I wonder if vinegar would work as an antifungal for the centipedes. Spray the substrate with a vinegar solution, as a preventive. Maybe put them in a dry environment for a period of time. I had a hognose that had a weird looking blister, that looked like a weird shed. No one I sent pictures to had seen anything like it. I soaked him in water to keep him hydrated, soaked him in diluted chlorhexadine. He was fine for a week and a half. Then I found him dead. It sucked. My other snakes have shown no issues thankfully. I current have a kingsnake that is 23 years old. I've had her for 22 years. She has multiple tumors on her that are small, but one isn't small. So far she is still hungry, but instead of a larger, normal sized prey item, I feed her smaller prey so it passes thru. I just give her more of them.

First is the diversity of the animals you keep and the second reason is that your commitment to the care of your animals and your generosity in sharing your care techniques with others who may be less experienced with these animals. I am sincerely sorry for your loss, but the one thing I can say is that every animal you care for has had the opportunity to have an excellent quality of life with you.

Sorry for your loss. We have all been there and made errors, a few years back I made a similar mistake where I fed a slightly larger mouse then I usually did to a juvenile green tree python I had. I left my house to attend a family party, when I returned I found the gtp dead at bottom of enclosure, it had attempted to regurgitate the mouse and obviously ended up chocking to death. I was heart broken but I learnt from my mistakes and as you said it made me a better keeper

Sorry for your loss. Those snakes are exceedingly beautiful as well. I believe that it isn’t the size of the food though. Natricids can swallow large prey, just like any other snake. They commonly catch large frogs and toads without ill effects. It was probably an issue after brumation or even something genetic. If the snakes are captive bred and come from a restricted gene pool, I wouldn’t exclude it. But please don’t underestimate snakes do to that incident. I have noticed that a lot of naturalistic keepers tend to underestimate snakes and their ability to catch and eat prey. From the one side there are many rack keepers, who often power feed and cause health issues, and then on the other one there are people who avoid large meals for their snakes or even only drop feed them. I am not implying that you are in the second category, just avoid becoming one.

Unfortunately everything in life comes with a cost. The higher the value to us, the higher the cost. With animals being priceless the price we pay for having them in our lives is how we feel when they pass away. The worst thing ever, a feeling that never goes away. I lost one of my dogs in 2018, one in 2019 and the last in 2023 (all cancer) and I still can't look at photos of them or talk about them without getting upset. I think about them daily and every time I do my heart breaks all over again. What I've noticed and appreciate in my short time being a subscriber is your dedication to do the right thing by your animals, always improving their care and furthering your knowledge. And you're willing to not only share that with your viewers, but also the sad times when something doesn't go right for whatever reason. I have all the time in the world for people like yourself who are willing to put their animals before their pride, and none whatsoever for those who have every opportunity and resource to provide for their animals, and do nothing. And there are plenty of those people on KZitem! Felix the Panther Chameleon's owner being a prime example. Inferno's passing might have been nothing to do with his food. But either way it's opened your eyes to the potential risks and you sharing it means thousands of owners can learn from it too. Don't go down the 'What if?' route. It won't benefit you or your animals. 😉

Thank you for humbly sharing your experience here. I loathe death, but love, love, love animals… so I keep a lot of animals - cats, fish, frogs, geckos - and I am just as vulnerable to the pain of witnessing death as I was when I was 6 (and I am 60 now). When one loves living creatures as much as we do, we never lose our sensitivity to the sting of death. However, I would not trade my love for God’s creatures for an immunity to the heartbreaking sadness I feel over the death of even one of these beautifully designed creatures. The daily fulfillment of being a steward and caretaker of the natural world’s creatures far outweighs the pain and heartbreak involved. Thank you again for sharing a part of yourself and for conveying critical animal keeping information to help us all succeed in caring for our pets!🤗

As upsetting as this video is and ofcourse feeling vulnerable as we all would after posting a video of our mistakes, its important. Many reptile keepers only post the positives and what works for them may not always work for us. Its important and necessary to post and share with the reptile keeping community, a mistake that so many others could be making right now. This video is the best kind for learning. A lot of reptiles are incredibly opportunistic and will try and eat what ever they can get. It's an easy mistake to make and I know you'll be beating yourself up about it as most of us would but this video gives inferno an ever lasting legacy and will hopefully save others from doing the same thing. You're a huge credit to the reptile keeping community Dayyan. Inferno was a beautiful snake, RIP 🙏

I appreciate that its not your fault I've been keeping reptiles and Amphibians for 5 years now and during that time ive had a few deaths and injures occur no matter how hard we try sometimes death and diease just happen. When i first got a crested gecko from petco i know its not good to get them from their but i didn't know. But it lived for about 3 months roughly before randomly dying. It would refuse to eat it barely ate and it suddenly became weak and stopped climbing the glass as much which I should have done something but i didn’t and it died a few days later. 2 months later i got another crested gecko from a different petco and everything went perfect i changed up stuff and she is still with me today at least 2 or 3 years old now. And it saddened me when recently she dropped her tail but she doesn’t all good and it healed over with not infections. About a year ago i got a firebellied toad from a breeder that lived for roughly 4 months originally it seemed healthy and was eating but about 3 months in it just stopped eating and very rarely ate. It got really small and skinny before i went on vacation when i came back my dad informed me he passed which wrecked my heart. Maybe a year after that i changed up the enclosure and changed my feeders from mealworms and stopped using them and gave other options instead and things went well for the 2 new ones i brought but after 2 months of owning them one decided to escape and i was unable to find them which broke my heart once again. I ripped my beautiful paludarium up and moved it into a enclosure with a door this time. And it worked but randomly the frog still found a way throught the crack however this frog made its way bag and jumped on me randomly in the night. So i put it back in after sealing the crack and checking him for injures and cleaning him up. Currently he is still doing healthy and has not escaped anymore. He is getting bigger as well which makes me happy to see him grow one day when my school schedule calms down i wanna get him a buddy again. But all this is to say you aren’t alone and i hope that this message helps someone who is just starting to get in the hobby.

Thank you for being so open and honest. I think losses regarding animals in generel is a very difficult topic to speak up about, especially since it is so common for people to be judgemental and say harsh things making it even harder since we already blame ourselves for what happened. Over the past months I have lost a lot of animals, some to abscesses even though I went to vets time after time and it has been so horribly hard - blaming myself for what happened and questioning my ability to take care of my animals even though I do everythingfor them and live to make them thrive. It is not something I speak up about because I dont want other people to think about me the same way I do and it is so tough to deal with the loss on your own. So thank you for bringing such a hard topic up and I am sorry for the loss of your little garter.

Thanks for the transparency and vulnerability here. You know, my very first reptile as a child was a leopard gecko. We did everything the pet store told us and this was a locally owned and operated store, not one of the big chains. I was watching tv one and turned to see what he was doing and he was coughing blood at the side of his tank. We actually took him to an emergency vet and found out the sand we were told was safe to keep him on had caused internal bleeding. It basically ruined reptile keeping for me until I was an adult. We feel your pain, buddy. Loss happens to us all.

All we can do is our best and beyond that it's not in our hands. I am not a breeder or really hobbyist with my one jumping spider and my Leopard Gecko... lol. However, I am into cat rescue, and I am 66 years old and have been doing it well over 30 years. What I can assure you is that it does not matter what species or breed you care for and no matter how perfect you try to be (I know, I care immensely and try every day to not put anyone in harm's way intentionally or accidentally) and still it happens. If we could be perfect in everything we do my name would not be Sharon and yours would not be Dayyan... we would be addressed as "God". When you deal with large numbers of any animal things will happen that are out of any realm of our control AND we will make mistakes that will damn near kill us in retrospect. Unfortunately, it's how we learn. And despite that, the good we accomplish still outweighs the bad. I know that does not make you feel better but know you're not alone friend.

I’m so sorry man! May the snake rest in peace now & transition peacefully! Sending you distant hugs man. But don’t be too hard on yourself Sometimes as a hobbiest we run on “autopilot” & just do things. Things like this happen. I have a desert tortoise & “had” a juvenile Russian tortoise. One day I was super exited to introducing them for literally 30 seconds and that’s all it took. My juvenile Russian caught an R.I from the desert tortoise & showed symptoms when it was already too late, died 3 days later. We learn but we can’t be too hard on ourselves. We learn & do better moving forward & along with some awareness that’s all we can control 😊

Aww Dayyan, I'm sorry, what a bummer. You're right though, loss is part of keeping animals - definitely the worst part. We're all learning as we go. Be kind to yourself!

I am so sorry. It is never easy when it is unexpected. We all do the best we can in this hobby but we are never going to be perfect. I took had the prolapse issue with some of my red eye tree frogs. It was so stressful. I have 3 that are doing well.

My condolences. However, to my knowledge California Red-Sided Garter Snakes are a CITES listed, endangered species in the US. I assume captive-bred specimens are available and legal to keep in Canada(?) Also, garters are known to do better kept communally in captivity. Unless they were too young to breed just wondering why yours were being kept separately, are you involved in a breeding program? I hope you can find a replacement male, they are really beautiful animals.

Thank you for your insightful comment! Yes, they are legal to own in Canada and both of mine were captive-bred! I didn't house my two animals together yet because my female isn't or wasn't old enough to reproduce and I was concerned about that occurring prematurely if they lived together as much as I would have liked for them to have each others company! Thanks again

I watched this just 1 day after losing an otherwise healthy 17 week old Rankins Dragon. I feel so bad for you as I know how much your animals mean to you. Like you, I was worried that it was something I'd done, so I did a mini necropsy to see if it was impaction. It wasn't, it was just one of those things. As I run a Facebook group called Top Rankins, I felt that I owed it to my group members to be honest and clear, so I posted the story. All I can say is how sorry I am for you. 😢Jxxx 🦎
