Everyone focuses so much on the door, many thefts/breaches happen from the side or top of the safe.

Good review. Watched video 3 times. Not being negative but don't think no safe is 100% safe, to keep a person valiables in. What is the best gun safe or safe out there ? Besides home alarm, and hope cops go there and do their job if someone does break in. Then is it really fire proof for 60 to 90 minutes like they claim ? And that is why they make paint for, can paint anything in any desired color.

It depends on what you mean by best. The best in terms of actual security will be one of these two by AMSEC. acme-safes-for-sale.com/pistol-safes.html?manufacturer=5526 But they're expensive. IMO, it's really one of the worst. The way they attempt to get into gun safes is knock them over and pry the door open. A wide open garage gives them lots of ways to knock it over and lots of space to pry. If you are going to put a gun safe in the garage, BOLT it down.

The AMSEC Max safes are TL-15 rated safes. An entirely different class of safes. Much more secure. Much more expensive. Man, I've been looking at getting a better safe than the Liberty Centurion I have now. The Hollon Black Hawk was probably going to be the one I purchased until now. I really wanted to see inside the door to check out the bolt work since I thought these gimmicky large number of 1.5" bolts sounded sketchy. I'm glad I waited until I could finally see in the door because that bolt work is trash, utter trash. The size of the bolts means jack as this man well knows, its sales gimmick to impress people who don't know anything about safes. Those bolts are simply screwed onto the edge of a piece of angle iron and are only supported in one place by the tiny edge of the angle iron they go through. Those thing's will just give way under any serious pry attack, their absurd thickness is totally and completely irrelevant when they are supported by virtually nothing. Real TL rated safes don't use boat loads of massive bolts. Some only use two 7/8" bolts and they're infinitely stronger than these. Come on Hollon, the rest of the specs are great but this is shameful. After seeing this I'm going to guess I'd also find the body is skip welded. Back to my search I guess. Hopefully a real safe of appropriate size comes up for sale locally. If not I guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and pay a little more for a Sturdy Safe or Amsec BFX.

With respect. I disagree. The bolts are secured to a u-channel steel bar. The thickness of that bar varies and increase with burglary rating. The door bolts on the Blackhawk are secured to the u-channel using 1/2" diameter bolts (if I recall correctly). At this price point, this is one of the best bolt configurations you'll see, and you only usually see it on UL-burglary rated safes. See burglary ratings explained at: kzitem.info/news/bejne/mqtjx6eJcH6VrKg . Compare this to a standard big box store safe that we show in our KZitem video. The difference will be obvious. kzitem.info/news/bejne/kplvl4CMq3SBp6A Going up to a UL- RSC rated safe will get you more secure bolt work, but as you mention, it comes at a cost. You can see the bolt work on a Hollon - RG UL Rated RSC, as well as the AMSEC BFX bolt work, in the links below. I'm not sure you'll like them though. They are the same type of securing mechanism, just using slightly thicker material. @@LocksmithRecommended Sure, but the bolt are only going through one side of the channel. They are only supported in one place which is the thin edge of that angle iron. The stationary bolts on the side opposite the hinges are held on with button head screws, I've never seen a 1/2" button head but I'm sure they exist. Those look to be 10mm to me. Either way they are very poorly supported unless I'm missing something and the video is giving me the wrong idea but I stopped it and studied it very carefully and I do not believe so. I'd love to be wrong here because it's the only game in town with those specs at that price point. You're a professional, I don't have to tell you that the main failure point in prying attack is poorly supported bolts. You can see tons of videos and photos of gun safes with large numbers of massive bolts pried open with the bolts simply bent backward because they are poorly supported. All that would have to be done to remedy the problem is to use channel iron and have the bolts penetrate through both sides inside the door so the bolts are supported in two places. You know, like real safes. Or you can do it like liberty where they use one forged bolt and bolt assembly that goes far into the door to support the back of the bolts against the door itself. I'm no fan of liberty safe but that is a good system for entry level gun safes. Anyway if I'm missing something please enlighten me. I'd really like to order one of these safes just the silly massive bolts can survive a real prying attack. Thanks for taking the time to respond

@@tdb19872 The only way to guarantee a specific burglary rating, is to buy one that is burglary rated. IMO the Blackhawk is a great value, you'd be hard to find better at this price, and we've seen the inside of a lot of safes. But, it does not carry a burglary rating. If you want one guaranteed against pry attack for a set time, get one that's RSC, RSCII, or TL rated. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. :)

@@LocksmithRecommended Of course the only way to really know for sure is to buy a TL rated safe. If a used one comes up for sale locally that's exactly what I'll do but TL rated safes this size aren't many. New ones are like 15k for just a TL15. You're not addressing my points about the bolt work. Am I missing something or is the bolt work as I say? However, although they aren't tested insurance companies agree that simply having construction specs is good enough to know the performance of a safe up to a certain point. Even an untested B rated safe is a heck of a lot more secure than any RSS 1 or 2. For now I just want something that any clown with an age or circular saw and 5 minutes can't open up like a tin can. A 10G RSC isn't a whole lot better in that regard but a well constructed one with a fully welded body and intelligent design certainly gives you significantly more time against and unskilled criminal brute force attack than the 14G liberty I have now. Eventually when I'm sure I'm in the house I'll die in some day I'll build a vault or have a no BS TL rated beast moved in but for now a solid speed bump and insurance is the ticket.

@@LocksmithRecommended also, you keep talking about the bolts being attached to U channels. This is true and I am sure that it helps to offer more resistance to end pressure if someone were to drill the door jamb and smack it with a punch. Which is a rare and advanced attack what does happen. So that is certainly a good thing, although more comes into play than simply those channels, the cam and lock mechanism are equally important. What I want to know about is the bolt support and how the bolts are attached. If you could clear this up I'd be very grateful as I am very interested in this safe. Heck, I'd even buy it from you because you've been very helpful if it checks out. Thanks again.

That's a tough question. During a burglary attempt, burglars will try to knock a gun safe over and pry the door open, or simply throw it in the back of a truck to get it offset where they can work on it. So with a gun safe, location isn't has important as securing it is. Since you can't really "hide" them as we talk about in our video "Where to hide small safes" ( kzitem.info/news/bejne/1nusnalmkHh5qqw ), securing the safe is the best thing to do. Bolting the safe down to the concrete is the ideal way to prevent it's being knocked over/moved. If you don't have post-tension slab, it's no problem. If you do have post-tension slab bolting down can be dangerous. If you cut a tension cable and it cause severe damage to the foundation and possible whomever is drilling. You can hire a company that will tell you were the cable lines are under the concrete. Alternatives to bolting down: Drill holes in the back of the safe and bolt to studs in the wall. Use glue of some type and set the safe on that to secure to the concrete. Buy a safe so heavy it can't be knocked over / moved during a smash and grab (i.e. you would have to come prepared with special equipment to move the safe). Put the safe somewhere in the home where it can't be knocked over or moved during smash and grab (i.e. you would have to come prepared with special equipment to move the safe).

Can't someone take a diamond blade to the side of the safe? I saw that video of the robbers at the pharmacy taking a blade to the side of the safe and pulling out the concrete or whatever the filling was.

Given enough time, you can cut through anything. The thicker the steel the better, but if someone comes prepared and has the time, they'll eventually get in. This is true of any safe. Check out our video Safe Burglary Rating Explained. kzitem.info/news/bejne/mqtjx6eJcH6VrKg
