Wilfred Sykes is a classic Great Lakes freighter, and she passed through the Soo Locks again! It's pretty rare for her to see Lake Superior so this is kind of a big deal. She's slotted to make her way back down from Marquette right on Engineer's Day which is also kind of a big deal!
Wilfred Sykes is a steam powered bulk freighter built in 1949. It was the longest ship on the lakes until 1952, earning her the unofficial title 'Queen of the Lakes' for her 678 foot length. She's also one of the last steamers - there are only 3 steam powered freighters left on the lakes.
The master salute at the end was from this crossing, however I was pretty far away so I cut it into footage when the vessel was closer. Most ships salute around Rotary Park in Michigan.
All video captured was on the DJI Mavic 3 Classic (with 2 shots from the DJI Pocket 3 at the end) on June 26, 2024. Music is Safe Ride Home by Adi Goldstein (licensed through Audiio).
