The nylon crochet ribbon reminds me of those toilet roll dolls from back in the 70s. Every Aussie woman had a doll with long legs (wedged into the cardboard insert) and wiiiiiiide wedding-style dress that covered the spare toilet roll. I remember being taught how to knit one when I was 9, which was a joy because you got to deliberately drop stitches, then work your fingers down the loops this created in the skirt. Great memories.

New watcher but I crochet left handed (even though I am right handed) because I was taught by a left handed person. It’s really all about the muscle memory because I cannot switch hands. I think my crocheting looks slightly different than most people’s because of how much I move my yarn holding hand as a result. Regardless, I’ve never had a problem using written patterns. For photo, video, and chart patterns you literally just have to flip it. I’ll take pictures of charts in books and use my photo editing tools on my phone to horizontally flip them lol. Some people also upload “left handed” videos that are just mirrored. Final note when I make patterns I flip the photos or provide both flipped and non-flipped to help people.

I have used a 10mm hook with t-shirt yarn for big round baskets, the cotton fabric ones stand up, but I need to work in small sections, or my gout hurts too much, I did straignt side handles, a few rounds down from the top. The baskets can hold 12 long balls for a colourful rug, i made a short tray to fit in the top, for the other bits on my lap, and a lid for the whole thing. I started with a flat disc, 7 sts start, and went as wide as I wanted, then flo turn, for straight up as high as I wanted. Having done the left- handed bit, you will understand how a lefty needs to learn, though a mirror helps with that too. Either 5, 8 or 12 ply colours of crochet cotton is used for micro pets a 0.7 hook does the job, or a 1.0. Hard to work with, you can use a paper clip or sewing cotton as a marker. My nanan crocheted doilies with sewing cotton, without patterns, she couldn't read english patterns.

This was really nice to see as a lefty crocheter. Lol I also naturally do yarning under with amigurumi, every other project (hats, blankets, etc.) Are usually yarn over. And it definitely makes my projects stitches more uniform and neat! Also a lot of what I do other than writing and crochet is with my right (because everything was done right handed in my family). So I'd like to try doing right handed crochet and see how I persevere. Following right handed videos are basically doing everything backwards(?) Or mirrored but once you get the hang of it, it's really easy and you can't tell a difference.

Wow! This was amazing! Even my young son (who isn't a crocheter) was loving watching this video. I am a left handed crochet and could not wrap my head around trying to crochet with my right. As to accessibility for left hand crocheters, I can follow most written patterns with little issues. I may have to change where certain stitches land (like popcorn feet). Also my finish tends to be mirrored from the original. However, in most cases, its not noticeable. What I do struggle with is charted designs. Since I work in the opposite direction as right handed people, trying to decipher a charted pattern is hard. The thing that made crocheting hard for me was actually learning to do the stitches. I had to find left-handed directions because with how things look reversed. It made it hard to figure out what was going on. Not sure if this info helps but it was nice that you asked. Another thing I wanted to comment on is don't give up on chunky yarn that you have seen others used. The Category 5 or 6 yarn is not that bad to work with honestly. You only need to go up a couple of hook size, I think I used a 5mm. It is way more manageable than the yarn you used. One last thing: you should give your sister the chunky whale since she is the reason for that yarn.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to write this, especially the info on crocheting left handed. It's good stuff to know! I haven't completely given up on chunky yarn just yet (in fact I'll be using it in tonight's vid) but I have to agree, the size 5/6 yarn isn't any where near as unmanageable as the super bulky yarn was and can actually be a nice change from my usual 8ply. I did actually ask her if she wanted it! Lol. But sadly she didn't, so I'll just add him to the whale army.

Hey, leftie here :) I loved this video and these challenges! Wow! In regards to your question; I've never noticed a difference where it comes to patterns, even in knitting. The only thing that comes out different from a left-handed crochet project and a right-handed one is the "spin" of the stitches. Crochet patterns are usually just about the stitches in of themselves, instead of "go clockwise this or that", so from my experience, it's just to follow the pattern and it won't matter that left is your dominant hand :) That said, I am a pretty new crocheter but I somehow learned how to knit right-handed when I was young. It was the continental style, so my hands probably got tricked a bit, but no one could teach me how to crochet left-handed when I was young, so I learned and got into it quite recently (October last year). Maybe some more experienced crocheters have experienced stitches that are tougher, but I don't think I've seen a stitch I couldn't do the same as a right-handed crocheter could. Though, charts can be a bit tricky if they aren't symmetrical or very small. Those can mess a little with the head, but can be managed with a highlighter and some attention. And I feel the same as your mom surely does--there aren't a lot of things for us lefties, but we adapt :) I think the most irksome one I've ever come across and will continue to come across my whole life is that writing on paper is for right-handed people, haha. Talk about muddy notes!
@SkeinSpider
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to explain all that! It's nice to get a different perspective. It's also good to know there's not a whole heap of difference between leftie and righty crochet patterns. I imagine it would be a pain in the bum to have to "reconfigure" a pattern every time because the overwhelming majority seem to be right-handed. Absolutely! She says the exact same thing, that and if she uses a spiral bound notebook, she ends up leaving about a third of the page blank as the spines get in the way! :)

Had a Thought. Just to make the chunky yarn whale functional maybe for one of your nieces or nephews you could go back and frog out one round of the gray. That would give you enough Grey to finish it off according to your pattern. And by reducing the overall diameter you should be able to finish off with the white you have already on it.❤

I crochet left handed and most of the time there's no issues following a pattern as written. It can be a bit tricky to understand pictures since they are a mirror of what my work (should) look like. If a piece is asymmetrical, however, it does turn out mirrored.

If you ever do try left-handed again, I know some people crochet with a still hook hand and a mobile yarn hand (instead of vice versa), and doing that while crocheting with your left hand might make the transition a little easier (moving the same hand, even though the hook/yarn are reversed). Who knows, it might make it even harder! But I thought that might be an interesting experiment if you ever do try again. Also in love with the tiny whale. Seriously considering a tiny embroidery thread crochet project now 🤔

This is probably gonna be an unneeded/unwanted post. I'm gonna do it anyway. You can use about three or four(there are more... I just can't find them[below are those I could find]) different hooks to crochet with embroidery thread. With out having to half the E.T. Keeping place in the round, pull a piece of e.t. of an opposing color....Some stitch markers are too large. Don't get me wrong, the more complicated the pattern the bigger the pain it is. It is finicky working with embroidery thread. Hook sizes I've used with e.t. 5\1.90mm, 8\1.50mm, 2\.25mm and E\4-3.50mm The best one I've found for Embroidery thread both the 5\1.90mm and the 2\2.5mm. Bigger the hook size the more Embroidery thread you'll need. Using those I've only used about two of each color, depending on how big the wip is.

For future endeavors with using embroidery thread (or other similar sized threads), instead of using a typical stitch marker which is a bit large for it, use instead a standard (or even a large one) safety pin. You'll have to be careful of poking things (like fingers) but will fit better.

I am left handed and crochet right handed as I was taught by a right hander. I can do it left handed and there is no difference in reading written patterns, so I tend to get a little frustrated when people blame a pattern instead of their own lack of practice.
