There is this children’s book series from the 90s in Japan called Kaidan Restaurant or Thriller Restaurant where the concept is, you go into a restaurant to listen to scary stories. And each restaurant usually has a little backstory, mostly a tragic one about not taking life for granted or the horrors of war etc. Baratie is very in line with those restaurants, I wonder if Oda read them for inspiration

The amazing thing about One Piece is that it's able to tell a self-contained story of a community on a small, remote Island while simultaneously hinting at massive conflicts that encircle the entire world. You're always aware that there are things going on in other parts of the globe that don't involve the strawhats.

Emily Rudd (Nami) is such a damn good actress. You can see the pain in her eyes, every time she (Nami) is conflicted. With Nami suggesting Luffy be thrown in the water, it stoped Arlong from outright just killing him and gave a slim chance of the others being able to get there in time to save him. It is debatable if Arlong would have honored his deal if Nami brought the money. He has a lot of pride and one of the big reasons he hates humans so much is because of their ease in lying from his POV. But he needs Nami's cartography skills so much he may still betray her by breaking his promise. We will never know because by using Ñezumi to take away the money before she could give it to Arlong, he could betray her without breaking his promise.

I think the reason Nami suggests throwing Luffy in the ocean is bc she knew Arlong would go for it. We know that sharp cuts Luffy from when he fought Kuro, he wouldn't have survived having his throat ripped out by Arlong's teeth, but throwing him in the water gave the crew a chance to save him. And since Arlong views the sea as the domain of the fishmen, it would be equally appealing as a way of killing a human, maybe even more appealing bc he'd suffer a little longer. It was the only thing she could do in the moment that would save his life (and not reveal that she cared). I think Zeff and Sanji are still my favorite backstory so far (I have not watched the anime or read the manga), bc it's both horrific and heart-warming. I love Nami, too, but man it is all tragedy. Oof.

They briefly brush over why Nami trusts the deal with Arlong. During the poker game she says "You know we don't lie about money on this crew" they focus on it a bit more in the anime and manga but Arlong's crew is basically platformed on 2 ideas: 1. Fishman are the superior species and 2. when it comes to matters of money you don't lie and you don't break your word. While it may have been a bit naive to assume Arlong would keep his word, he did for years. I don't think Arlong ever thought she'd be able to get that much money and when it finally happened Nami had proven too valuable to not be under his control.

It's a great moment that completely punctures Arlong's pride and superiority, that he makes a big deal about his rules and honor, yet almost casually breaks his accord with Nami the second it suits him. Between the extra time you have spent with the characters getting emotionally invested in them, and everything they cut out of the live action, and the minor changes they made it ends up hitting 3 times harder. Especially what they cut out. Suffice it to say that what happened in the backstory and modern day had a lot of parallels in the anime, so it had a ptsd aspect to it as well. i know its always EXTREMELY frustrating in the moment, but eiichiro oda is a master at delayed gratification lmao. like, he'll pull as faaaar as he possibly can while making you wonder "why though? what is happening?? why is she doing this??" because then the reveal of what actually happened will usually occur in a very dramatic/tense/climactic moment and will make you go "ooooh....oooh now it all makes sense!!!". and now imagine that over a span of 27 years and 1100+ chapters. there are still things today that get revealed, that were set up as a mystery HUNDREDS of chapters and over a decade in real time ago. those reveals cant really be replicated into any other medium, because weekly/bi-weekly chapter releases aren't really a thing for any other medium than comics, specifically the japanese manga industry. its quiet magical, that feeling of FINALLY knowing something that, now that you remember it, youve been waiting 10 years for to finally know.

Thank you for crying and being vulnerable in your videos because it really helps me feel like I can cry and express emotions. I know how difficult it can be to be vulnerable and put yourself out there, so I just wanted to say how much I genuinely appreciate it :)

Fun fact: in the manga, during Arlong Park there is no mention whatsoever of the prejudice against fishmen or the fact they were enslaved. That revelation only comes hundreds of chapters later.

For me the absolute best acting of the series is done by Emily Rudd as Nami in this episode. She crushes it throughout. But it's the scene when the corrupt Marines are confiscating her money that hits the hardest for me. That's the scream of someone that sacrificed her own conscience and ability to sleep at night for that money. And it's that performance that explains why she didn't tell her sister. Her sister would have tried to help her, and she didn't want anyone else dirtying themselves trying to help her do all the terrible things she did to try and free her village.

The discrimination against Fishmen is actually so brutal. If I remember correctly, some humans actually capture them amd use them as slaves. Selling them in auctions.

They did mention slavery here so they'll probably address it more in future seasons

Nami’s backstory got you pretty good. And you just witnessed an iconic scene at the very end.

One thing I’m kind of upset the live action changed was that in the anime, the other villagers actually found out about Nami’s deal a long time ago, but pretended that they didn’t know and kept acting like they hated her because they were worried that if she felt like they were counting on her, she’d never leave Arlong even if it got to be too much for her

While I technically agree that I like the manga version better, it kinda makes the villagers cruel to not just help that little girl and tell her to just leave.

I really like the fact that you acknowledged Arlong and the other fishmen's sob story without approving of their horrible actions. You even felt bad for all of the times you called them ugly and said that you'd absolutely judge a book by its cover. It takes an empathetic heart to both acknowledge where your enemy is coming as well as feel bad for immediately being disgusted by their initial appearance. I think this is the moment I subscribed to you.

If you think Nami's arc is good in the live action, then it might surprise you to hear that it is nowhere as good as the original. They've changed just a bit too much in their quest to strip things down for the live action format, and the original hits so much harder because the villagers and her mother play a more central role to the plot: mom is a rabble rouser without mom-like qualities trying to adjust to that role. Beyond that, Nojiko is Nami's biggest supporter, and as a whole, the 'helpless' state of the village is explained away better with an admirable intention of their own. Nami's self-destructive behavior there is a true moment where all hope is lost to her, whereas the live action doesn't quite manage to get that across to me. She's the type of girl who will endeavour to collect 100 million berries a second time because hey, she's done it once, so she can do it twice. Mind you, the live-action does great as a whole, and Emily Rudd kills it as Nami, as do the other cast members. It's just... you're not supposed to mess with perfection, you know? But hey, at least One Piece is filled with tragic and beloved stories like Nami's, so the show will have plenty of opportunities to do better... and worse, I guess. Hopefully the former, though! Also, there is a fair chance Arlong _would_ have let here have the village if she'd been able to pay him before his doublecross caused her to lose the money to pay him. A key element of his crews shared values and morals are about monetary deals being a serious thing you don't lie or doublecross about. Of course they are pirates, but there's the slavery history that the live action expands upon compared to the original that explains why: slaves and lives can be bought despite it being a twisted world where pirates are everywhere. The monetary transaction is incredibly unfair, but offers a framework that the weak & disadvantaged can somewhat exist within. Slight spoiler ahead: You might think that the fish(wo)men are so ugly that they are of little interest to own other than their natural physical prowess, but that is just because you are a lot of seasons away from meeting their truly endangered societal counterpart the mermaids/mermen. On the market, a young mermaid is worth her weight in gold and then some... and it is unfortunately a far better reality to just accept such a payday than to decide to not sell. Things can _always_ get worse.

If you remember, Arlong was about to take a bite of Luffy when Nami stopped him. I thought that she would rather let Luffy have some chance at death with drowning than no chance at all with being eaten.

The original was more disconcerting... Nami was kidnapped immediately (she didn't ask to join) after her mother was killed. Genzo and the villagers tried to prevent the fishmen from taking her but they got beat up real bad.
