“One Side is Always Blocked” #breathe.
The phenomenon of one nostril periodically feeling more blocked than the other is due to the natural nasal cycle. The nasal cycle is a normal physiological process where the airflow through the nostrils alternates roughly every two to six hours. This cycle is regulated by the autonomic nervous system and affects the blood flow to the nasal tissues, causing the nasal turbinates (structures inside the nose) to swell and shrink alternately.
During the nasal cycle, one side of the nasal passages becomes more congested while the other side opens up, allowing for increased airflow. This congestion is caused by the expansion of blood vessels in the turbinates, leading to increased mucus production and a sensation of blockage. After a few hours, the cycle reverses, and the previously congested nostril opens up while the other one becomes more constricted.
This cycle serves several purposes. It helps to ensure that both nostrils stay moist and can efficiently filter, warm, and humidify the air we breathe. It also prevents the nasal tissues from drying out, which could lead to irritation or infection.
Although the nasal cycle is a normal and usually unnoticed process, certain conditions can make the congestion more noticeable or bothersome. Factors such as allergies, colds, sinus infections, or deviated septum can exacerbate the feeling of blockage. In such cases, the natural nasal cycle might become more pronounced, leading to frequent alternation of which nostril feels blocked.
