I love listening to these posts as I open my phone in the morning. Nature is a truly ever changing thing. I love hearing the rooster also🤗

One of the problems is too much ivy. It weakens the boughs and weighs them down so they break more easily. We should try to get some of the ivy off.

I love this ancient moss-covered tree. It is majestic. I'm sure the broken branches are not the end of the tree, even if it does have a few blemishes now ❤❤

We lost a huge old oak behind our house a few years ago in a storm with high wind. A good portion of the tree came down, and what was left was unstable and had to come down. We learned was that it had probably been struck by lightening years ago which left a hole in the top of the tree. Over the years the tree had been rotting from water getting into the hole. I can sympathize with how upsetting it is to lose these beautiful old trees. I used to have lots of different types of butterflies flying around my yard every summer, but since the oak is gone I don't see any of them. We do have a young oak that grew from an acorn off the old one, so I'm hopeful that it will bring a host of new critters to my yard.😃

We have many varieties of oak trees in Florida. Some only live for 40 years, while others last for 150 years and beyond.

Yes, that's true here too. I think most of the oaks here are a much shorter-lived variety than for example most of the big oaks we have in England, and they're less strong too. But either way they're not at all used to this extreme weather!

It's sad that your oak trees are taking such a beating from the recent conditions.

Thanks Karen. We feel very sad about it too. It does seem like we might be seeing the end of the era of the largest oaks around here, but you never know, things might change for the better for them!
