This is by far the most detailed, relatable, and accurate representation of how it feels to learn Unity

Very interesting and unique narrative. It's refreshing to see someone who you can easily relate to: "Gamedev for the normal by the normal" not those kinds of videos where 1 year later the persons have created their own GTA.

Have always dreamed of making games. A few months ago I delved deep into the millions of videos and tutorials on game development in hopes I'd get the inspiration to start, but I just got overwhelmed and didn't know any more than when I started, so I dropped it. This video got the gears turning again and got me re-inspired to give it another go. Keep up the good work, man 👊

That's excellent, just stick to it and you'll be amazed at the progress you can make! I just set up a discord with the goal of creating a space where we aspiring developers can encourage each other. Stop by sometime! discord.gg/Mg86kjrhUj

You've helped me realise that I don't need to rush it. You see all those other devs who somehow started making first person shooters and 2d platformers after 3 months... it had me overwhelmed, i felt like i needed to reach that level of understanding at their same learning pace. But you took your time and made meaningful progress as a solid understanding of the basics is worth more than a clump of hard to read spaghetti code from merging 5 different tutorials into one script for their dream games they will have to restart because their "understanding" isnt as valuable as someone's who took their time. In reality, im not a super fast learner, something as complex as programming and game development is going to take me a while, best i can do is accept that and as long as i learn something new everyday, that's enough. I never planned to make it a career so why should i rush. Not like many of those new developers on youtube made those games without tutorials anyway, a lot of people get impatient and want to start making big dream games when they cant even make a small one completely by themselves. That's my goal, when i can make a small refined game by myself, that's when i consider bigger projects but for now, i cant even write a player script without help. if actually read this unnecessarily long comment even though this video is old, thank you for helping me come to accept that i need to take my time, it's inspirational and motivating to finally find someone who values having a good understanding of their code than that of building big games early on.

I appreciate the thoughtful response! I totally agree. Take the time to learn the basics and make tiny tiny projects. Then you can build from there. I honestly have to go back over the basics on the reg because I forget simple things or have a new understanding of the fundamentals. Thanks for commenting and good luck!

@@emeralgamedev I'm currently watching your "Basic Unity Concepts" video and it's been very helpful so far, I'm now very interested in learning the "why" for everything whereas before i just wanted to learn what things did, asking why things do what they do is proving to be a lot more interesting and a more valuable method of learning/gaining an understanding.

Unity is NOT the place to start. Start with a more simple programming language, like scratch. Scratch is amazing for new devs since it only really teaches you the programming mindset, like “I should make a variable for the speed of my jump, add this much vertical speed when you jump and decrease it with gravity whilst adding this much height to the player as they jump and then subtracting this much height from the player when they slow down enough.” To the experienced scratch dev, its just, uh “gravity, jump, yes.”
