Dan--Phenomenal episode. I learn so much from your excellent program. I am new to the KZitem version and love it. For certain guests, please continue to elicit the origin story. I never knew Yossi's. Interesting and helpful. (Also loved Rahm Emanual's stories as a young guy in Chicago). Your excellent work matters. For example, it helps me in my discussions with faculty and students at my university whose ignorance is boundless and dangerous.

If I may put my 2cents, Dan, I would add that people who does not have their kids in the army, doesn’t pay the high taxes or does not pay for the consequences of the political decisions, should not have a say on Israeli politics. Our role is support no matter what.

Judicial reform or overhaul is an important issue so it's a shame when a real intellectual such as Klein Halevi doesn't deal with it as an issue, rather as an opportunity to disparage the right. Israel judiciary is unlike anywhere in the world. It is not an independent judiciary as much as an independent, self perpetuating body that has the ultimate power to overturn the will of the people and its' elected government... and base opinion on a "reasonableness" clause. The reasonableness is the outlook of a certain group in Israel that does not represent the majority of the nation. The liberals in Israel should have joined in a judicial reform rather than use it to frighten Israelis and make American jews and others questions whether or not Israel is worth supporting.

Thank you Yossi for your thoughts on where Israel is and the future. I hope you know there are millions of non Jews in the USA like myself who love Israel and dedicate time and resources to Israel. I fail to understand Israel infighting and why so many would protest an elected government by the will of the people with a 64 seat majority and ministers like Smotrich who are Zionist just like you and love Israel. I hope and pray that you can unite with ministers like Smotrich and move forward on a One State solution for Israel. David Friedman has just written a book called "One Jewish State" and if the Republicans win in November this policy will be the policy that the USA would support for Israel, so I pray that you will unite with the current government and their love of Israel and move forward.

Great episode, seems like some commenters would prefer to stay naive about the existential threats Israel faces from not just outside but also within.

You said: “...as someone who, until two years ago, was based on the political commitment of unity and solidarity… And then I felt that I had no choice but to go against part of my fellow Israelis, to go against my government. That's a question that I'm going to face very personally. What do I do with that now?” I would like to suggest an answer. 1. You first and foremost take ownership of your role in helping to fuel and fan the flames of divide in the country and among the Jewish people. 2. You then publicly ask all of those who you went against for forgiveness. 3. You then find a more mature, loving and caring manner to disagree (even strongly) with your fellow Jews and Israelis (even - if not particularly - when you feel that what they are doing is dangerous). 4. At the same time, you will work on your humility in listening to and trying to understand those who you disagree with. You may still disagree at the end - perhaps even more so. But you will do so from a position of listening and thinking. 5. And finally, you will try to figure out when it is proper and helpful to take to the streets, and when not to. There are definitely times for activism - but there are also times specifically NOT to be an activist. You will do this while (hopefully) those in favor of the reform do their own soul searching. But whether or not they do won’t hold you back from doing yours.

Appreciate and applaud your podcast. I'm hard-pressed to comprehend his despondency and his general negative tone. First, it isn't my right to go around telling anyone or any country what to do. Second, when he says "defending Israel abroad," I'd like to know why he feels this is his calling? Why do you need to defend something verbally when there is nothing to defend? Why does Israel need to be defended? Because someone is going to hurt their feelings? I believe Israelis are pretty secure in themselves. Israel is in a war, and he's counting angels on the head of a pin. You have men and women fighting and dying, and this is definitely not what I would want to hear while driving an armoured bulldozer. And frankly, if any of this makes sense in any context, how come I have yet to hear from anyone from an Arab country or Iran who has a peaceful view of the future. Dude, I respect your experience and education, but you've got brave soldiers out there risking their lives. You need to put your self-righteousness aside and accept that in a knife fight, it's good to bring a gun. There are no do-overs.

I think the greater danger to Israeli society is people like Mr. Halevi publicly stating that Netanyahu is a clear and present danger to Israeli society. PLEASE - STOP WITH THIS DIVISIVE LANGUAGE. I'm more than happy to hear your opinions - those that I agree with and those that I don't. But I want them respectfully stated, without the character assassination and accusations and claims that are based at best on your personal assessment and feelings.

1. I wholeheartedly disagree with Yossi Klein Halevi’s views on whether or not American Jewry should openly criticize Israel. I DO NOT agree that it’s American Jewry’s responsibility to do so. It can and has had dire consequences such as the creation of even deeper divides across Israel and the world at large. If this inclusion of American opinion ever did prove beneficial to Israel, we have certainly now lost that privilege. I believe anti Jewish/Zionist protests in the diaspora purposely coincided with this now gaping whole in Israeli unity. Once the divide was beyond repair, it became the perfect time for Iran and its proxies to swoop in and support this hatred, thus resulting in October 7th. Moreover, Diaspora “tough love” might have been needed because there was not enough Israeli support against the Judicial Reform. Most Israeli Jews DID see the protests against political reform as political. 2. I also disagree with YKH’s feeling that “Genuine partners” are necessary to have in the diaspora. A genuine partnership, in my eyes, would not include Diaspora Jews weighing in on democratically “elected official”s decisions. 3. I would love to see Einat Wilf on your show!

There must be some consolation in the achievements and successes of Israel since Oct 7 despite all the hardship. An estimated 300 to 500 thousand Palestinians have been driven out of Gaza, into Egypt, from where they are emigrating elsewhere. So even if the original goal of complete ethnic cleansing was, alas, not achieved, one seventh of the total population being removed can't be scoffed at as insignificant. And give yourself credit for the 40,000 that have been killed. Not to mention that, when all the indirect deaths due to malnutrition and a destroyed health system are counted over the coming years, that total will likely by 150 or 200k total, even if the war stops tomorrow. Furthermore, and not least, Israel can tout its complete success in making Gaza unlivable. It is estimated it will take 15 years just to remove the toxic rubble, let alone rebuild the 70 percent of homes that have been destroyed. So kudos. Give yourself a pat on the back. Why not join one of the boat tours that Israeli entrepreneurs are organizing along the Gaza coast so that excited and proud Israelis can view all that has been accomplished in Gaza. Not a single university left standing! It makes the heart leap.

Is there a place where Dan or your interview guests speak to the urgency to secure the hostages in the context of the murder of the most recent six that Israel was about to rescue? Doesn't that tell us anything about the possibilities here (and lack thereof)?

I watched it twice.. My main take away was that Norman Finkelstein in his unrivaled depth of wisdom on this topic, is still yet to publicly condemn the Palestinian leadership for perpetuating genocidal attacks on the Israeli citizens. One would think after Norm continues to tell us all about how “well read he is” he would understand the insane doctrine of Islamic martyrdom and speak out against this continued violence aimed at the Jews and Israeli citizens.
