If you have to explain it like this that means Microsoft has failed in communicating it. And OneDrive can be used as backup as long as you just don't sync it to your PC but download files as needed.

If you stop syncing, unlink your account, or choose not have that folder backedup, it will then act like cloud storage and your files in the cloud and locally will be different. OneDrive is and can be backup, but you should not be syncing if you don't want it in sync and rather have it as a cloud backup storage.

Never use a system that is based on displaying ads to its users during regular use! It doesn't matter if it's only ads for themselves, or whether they call it information, helpful tips, hints, or whatever else. Ads are just an annoyance and a hindrance to doing what you want or need to get done. As you say, they're an harassment in such cases. As long as there are alternatives users should "vote" by boicotting such systems. It's the only "language" a commercial company will react to, and the alternatives are not guaranteed to be there much longer if not supported. It's a pity that so few users seem to bother or care to take the necessary steps to support their own opinions, and then later get rewarded by even more harassment.

Not to be same as the OneDrive folder shown on computer, but designatedFolder on the computer which has some important files which are sometimes edited, and reedited again. Copy & Paste any desired file in "designatedFolder" any time, to OneDrive folder. THERE! Now the file is located in two places: The designatedFolder on the computer, and in the OneDrive folder including the online OneDrive storage. (Or does that count as three places? )

Microsoft has taken away the very good (free) Windows 10 backup that stores a second copy of your data on external storage, and given us Windows 11 "backup to OneDrive" which is, essentially, a subscription "backup" that isn't a backup. Very few people have less than the free 5GB limit. The clue is in the name, One Drive, available in multiple places. This is not a backup, it's functionality the same file in multiple places. If your account is compromised, you lose access to your account and can lose access to your computer. Microsoft knows better, this is not a backup. It's a completely synical move. Take away the free backup to external media, and replace it with a subscription that provides less security. Rant over.

The user that lost his files should have tested deleting unimportant files, before he deleted important files. If he had done so, then he would have seen what happens, and not deleted his important files. Or, he should have had those important files saved on a flash drive, etc, before deleting his important files that get synced with OneDrive. Leo, does OneDrive have a recycle bin? Or even the user's own recycle bin might have his deleted files.

Microsoft has been pushing a lot of misleading claims, like encrypted (and safe) recall content, or that your computer will remember forever what you saw on your screen, but then saying those 25GB etorage will have just 3 months worth of content... did they mean the text output by AI will contain your forever activity? That doesn't take much space. But since Microsoft certainly has a backdoor to your system, it won't necessarily be 100% private. The 3 letter agencies will get to your content without much hassle. Dream on, folks. They want your best interest. Don't let them take it!

Of course. Here's what ChatGPT told me, and I believe it to be accurate (always check accuracy w/ AI): "Microsoft provides information about their policies regarding scanning files uploaded to OneDrive in their Privacy Statement and the Microsoft Service Agreement. They specify that while they don't actively "look" at the contents of users' files, they may use automated technologies to scan for certain content, such as viruses, malware, and illegal content like child exploitation material. This is part of their efforts to ensure a safe and secure service environment. The scanning typically involves automated systems, and they state that personal files and content are treated with privacy in mind."

Good video. I've found that "for me" OneDrive presents too many problems in the way I would like to use it. Sure, file synchronization between devices is great for some things, but OneDrive doesn't seem to offer much in the way of configuration tools so it can be customized to suit various use cases. It's likely I just don't know how to set it up properly and has created some real headaches from one device to another. So, "for me" it's easier to just delete the app than deal with the headaches it causes.

It's so frustrating how MS (and others) constantly try to obscure what is really going on behind a GUI veneer that tries to portray the computer world as just a simple, easy playground where data floats somehow in a happy wonderland. The real model of how data is stored is not difficult to grasp and it hasn't fundamentally changed since at least the days of DOS. When you actually need to manage your data - which everyone does from time-to-time - eg: recovering from a failure, backing up, moving machines, archiving etc etc - then you actually do need to understand what's going on. All credit to Leo for cutting though the crap to give us the real facts. Once we know the facts, we can make proper informed choices about how we want to manage our own data.

Putting something up in the cloud is the same as putting it on someone elses computer. If you're happy with that, fine, but, not that i can prove it, Mr Microsoft might be able to look them over, or some other company. Personally, we're better off backing up the way I do it. 1, i have a second drive in my computer, i work from this drive, any adjustments are saved and changed to this drive of folders and files. 2. I have 3 external drives, i dont leave these connected. 3. I use syncback pro (or your favourite software) to mirror (syncro) the internal 2nd drive to the 3 external drives. 4. Encryption, well you pick your flavourite program to do that. I feel a tad safer doing this rather than putting my stuff on someone elses computer (cloud storage) And one more thing, a nice ... hidey spot somewhere, just in case of fire 🔥 water 🌊 or theives and away from condensation. I had my wills in a safe, fricken mould got in some how, now i have to do them all over again grrrr.

Then what happens if your HDD crashes or gets corrupted, or you buy a new computer? And you link OneDrive with that new pc? Is OneDrive going to delete your files in the cloud because your HDD is empty? Or is it going to copy the files from the cloud back onto your computer? That's why I stay away from sync software as it's unclear what the system will do. If you had critical files on the cloud and you replace your harddrive, the cloud may think you deleted the files on your end and will wipe them from the cloud as well. That's why I prefer manual backups so I can decide what must happen with every file.

@@askleonotenboom Thanks! Good to hear from someone that has actually experienced such conflicts. I tend to avoid the sync tools simply because I don't really trust implementations for different platforms to cooperate consistently for all the corner cases. Granted, OneDrive is not a real backup solution but much, much, better than having nothing at all. And many people have nothing at all. With many file synchronisation systems, like OneDrive, the cloud storage will keep deleted files for about 30 days. So at least one has some chance of retrieving inadvertently deleted file(s). (Often one needs to do the restoring using the cloud storage directly). Also, in case of a ransomeware attack one can restore the whole cloud storage to a point in time of a maximum of about 30 days back. Personally, I use OneDrive and my backup-compliant solution is Apple's Time Machine. But that's local so OneDive and iCloud provide my off-site solutions. (I used MS-Windows systems extensively as a software developer over many decades but since my retirement I use iOS/MacOS devices).

Maybe I've been misunderstanding the way cloud storage works, but I've never thought it synchronizes at all. Does moving a file to the OneDrive folder actually retain that file in your PC? My thinking has been that the OneDrive folder in your PC isn't an actual folder in the same sense others are, but a portal for moving files to the cloud. Files showing nowhere except in the OneDrive folder exist only in the cloud, not in your PC. If I wanted to store a backup in the cloud, I would just copy that file to the OneDrive folder while retaining the original in my normal backup (non-cloud) folder.
@askleonotenboom
