There's nothing I like more about tobacco than the great people that grow it and the stories that come from the harvesting and growing of it. I could watch videos like this all day. Thanks for making them brother… now where's my burley?!

That was a killer video. Every young person should have to do one tobacco season start to finish. It builds character. 👍👍👍

They wouldn't make it through topping, suckering it, spraying it. They'd fall over spreading sticks, and cutting it. If they made it to housing it it would be a clown show. I never had a high boy the land was too steep to spray or spread sticks. We had backpack sprayers and spread sticks by hand. Only a 2 row setter. No float beds. I've said it all my life. It's the most labor intensive crop you can raise. I miss it though. I loved doing it my whole life. Started out following the setter and the cultivator uncovering plants and hoeing out weed when I was 5 or 6.

I used to get a penny a plant, six cents per stick to cut & stick. I am curious what they get now. Still some of the hardest work I ever did, and I used to swing a sledgehammer a good part of the day for a number of years. The fields were so steamy, and almost no breeze.

I've said it all my life and still think it's true. I grew up raising tobacco and then myself as I got grown until the tobacco base buyout. It's the most labor intensive crop there is especially when I grew up growing it. From putting out the beds to pulling the plants all the way up to stripping it you handle every plant at least 6 times. Sometimes more. The most I remember ever getting was 12 cents a stick if I worked for someone else back in the early 90s. I miss it to be honest. Especially getting all the family together to strip it. Good memories but hard work. We rarely hired help unless we needed some barn monkeys to help house it.

I do not understand why the leaves stay in the field for three days. Are they drying? if so, why not put them in the barn. If I grew tobacco, what is the going price for it?
@OneManSmoke

The plant has to rest kind of deflate. The plant will not be damed when hanging it in the barn called housing. The tobacco is graded then a price is set. moisture and quality is what it is about at market. there are 3 grades and if your tobacco is to wet you get rejected. I have seen anywhere from 1.50 to 2.60 a pound. most farmers don't disclose what they are fetching. I am not sure what the CBL will bring but I'm sure it's a premium price above burley.

I grew Tobacco for the first time this season. I grew all burleys. I did everything unconventionally and a unorthodox to what I've seen in these videos as i have to improvise my method of curing. So ive been harvesting them by leaves at a time from the bottom leaves up. Is there a particular reason why Burleys are harvested whole plant and impaled on a stake to field wilt? I've seen that Virginia is harvested by leaves at a time and Burleys are whole plant and impaled. Why is this?
@OneManSmoke

It needs time for deflation this way the plant is malleable and can be hoisted into the barn with minimal damage and loss.
