Hello LP. First, the little sets (small onion bulbs, white or yellow) do not make big slicing onions. Good camera work. Fascinating how they come out folded. I got excited when you came across that first straight one. I could hear the change in your tone when you said the word "weed". Glad you plucked them out early. Seems easy to tell onions from any other greenery. I'm going to try this since onion sets rarely work for me. Someday you should sell a planting calendar. One that plans ahead as well as you do. Thank you OAG.
@OldAlabamaGardener
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is fascinating about the folded way the onion seedlings grow. I don't know of any other plant that does that. It does make it easy to tell the onion seedlings from other grass and weed seedlings. It is important to keep the grass and weeds out of the onion bed, the onion seedlings don't like the weed and grass to over take them. Onion sets will never grow big slicing onions, no matter how well you take care of them. I will explain that in a future video. OAG
@farmergirlofchickens8779

I'm curious. Somewhere I heard about the middle of the USA has a hard time growing big onions. Something about the light. Up North a certain kind does well. Down South there's another kind that thrives. Those of us in the middle, like North Carolina, we have trouble. Something about intermediate onions? Don't know what they were talking about. I'm going to try your variety and way of planting.
@OldAlabamaGardener
4 жыл бұрын
@@farmergirlofchickens8779 I plan to explain that in my next video on these onions. For onions there are three zones or areas, a short day, intermediate day and long day. What this means is that in these different growing zones, the number of daylight hours are different. One might think that the long day would be in the south but that is not true. Long day zones are in the north. There is a variety of onion for each of the three growing zones. If you try to grow long day onions in a short day zone you will probably fail. If you are in the intermediate zone, I don't recommend you grow the variety of onion I am showing in this video, because it is a long day onion. My way of planting and taking care of the onion is the same for all three zones. OAG

Hello, Sir. I am in zone 7 b in Rockaway Park.N.Y. If I start the onions seeds in the garden now, and when they sprout I will cover them with hay. Do you think they will survive the winter just like the Garlic I planted.? I'm a ( urban homesteader) I plant on raise planters and everywhere I fnd a bit of dirt. I Love and enjoy very much gardening. I feel so satidfied when I make my own sauces (tomatoe) and growing the herbs and other veggies and offcouse sharing them.. it is just awesome. Anyone would think I have 'a farm'. I really want to do the propper thing to grow my onions also pumpkins, and melons. I would apprecuate very much if you can share your knowledge in growing those vegetables. Thank very much. Blessings Laura M.

I am in the same growing zone you are in, except I am in north Alabama. Yes, I think the onion seeds can sprout and survive the winter for you. Melons require a long growing season, so you would do well to start the plants inside the house and then transplant them out when danger of frost is past in the spring. Pumpkins can be started about the 1st of July and should reach maturity before you have a frost in the fall. OAG

Beside the weeds, only thing growing is a mix greens I planted a month ago, mostly lettuces. I will let you know how the onions do. Thank you. Blessings. Laura M

My onion sprouts are just at the stage of yours in the video now. Is it okay to mulch them with some straw to give them a little protection from this early cold. Zone 8A NE Georgia. This is my first year growing onion from seed. Planted Early Granos and White Creole. I didn't mix them with soil first though and some are bunched up very close. Will definitely try this next year.
