I had the same problem, I opened the case (after unplugging the power) and used a heat gun to reflow the solder on the Texas instruments DSP chip that is located on the HDMI board in the top right rear corner. It took two tries. I got it scary hot. You can tell if it's fixed if the speaker icons show up on the screen again.

My NR509 also developed no sound just 4 months out of warranty. This appears to be a common problem and Onkyo should address it. I really liked this receiver until the no sound issue surfaced. I wrote to Onkyo but did not receive a reply from them yet. Onkyo AV receivers have a lot of functionality and are in the sweet spot for pricing but I hesitate to purchase another because of questionable dependability. It's to bad because they have some really nice new receivers but will they also develop problems in little more than two years?

Try to set your device back to factory settings. This is done by pressing the buttons VCR/DVD and the power button for about 2 seconds. Then the message "clear" appears on your front panel. Your device is now reset back to factory settings. For me it worked like a charm. 😊 Hope it works for you too.

Did see that 17k watched this movie! cool, my problem was solved by Onkyo on warranty, and it was something with the hdmi like some of u told me. I will let the movie stay online if more need to check and have the same problem. After the repair all is nice with my reciever!

TX-NR808. Same deal 3yrs old. No sound, No speaker/channel indicators, Audyssey wait indication during setup. Initially, the sound would chirp loudly after fast forwarding back to play mode. Then it began to cut the sound out completely and I would have to just hit the volume up or down to get back the sound. Yesterday, I unplugged it and wait 30 seconds to resolve it. Today I can get no sound at all. Everyone on this post knows what we have. I don't want a temporary fix.

same problem after many attempts to get sound bk on and had to keep doing the audessey sound set up again ,,,which is doing what yours is doing now , not letting me press enter on last bit ummmmm .. just arranged for a box and return label to be sent to me so unfortunatley shes going in for repair ,, , shame as when i did get the sound on it was absolutely superb sounding .. ohh well see what happens after the repair as they do it free on the onkyo site ,, hope you got yours sorted ,, cheers,, nick

I have the same problem with my 18-month old NR-818 and cannot find a way to get the sound to work. When the problem started it could be fixed by turning it off and then turning it on again but then the sound disappeared completely. Tried a factory reset but no use. Also I can't upgrade the firmware as it won't recognise any brand of usb!

hey man I have the same sound and USB issue. I have a USB fan pluged into my usb port, I can confirm the USB issue is due to the port not receving any power, not because youre using the wrong USB. bit late, but helpful for anyone else in the same boat. Presume the sound and the USB receive power from the same hdmi board

Blast a hot Hairdryer into the top centre vents for a few minutes then turn off and on. Keep trying until the speaker symbols appear and sound is heard. Just like my classic MGB roadster, It doesn't like cold starts!!

My 509 bit the dust. Looks like the same thing as this video. I read a few forums and someone suggested a heatlamp or hairdryer. I blew a hot hairdryer into the top vents and turned it on and off a few times during the heating then.....click it started working again. The speaker icons showed in the display and everything was fine. I switched off for a while and tried again...broken again. Heated again then worked. I know this isn't good for it but it works short term.

This is a common issue on the 509. I've installed 6 or 7 of them and 3 have gone bad on me in first 3 years. I was told that they will fix it for free beyond the warranty date. I've been too lazy to send them back.

I guess I'm in the same boat as everyone else. Started having problems with my Onkyo TX-509 a few weeks ago. No sound when I switched to AppleTV. I managed to fix the sound on AppleTV and thought my problems were over. NOPE! The next morning I didn't get any sound for CBL/SAT or AppleTV. I unplugged some of the HDMI cables, turned off the unit and my TV, plugged the HDMI cables back in and turned TV, then receiver back on. It came to life again. This happened several more times and I was able to get the sound again... Today, nothing. I've had this unit since early 2012 and it is no longer under warranty. This is the last Onkyo I buy. In search of a new receiver.... UGH!

Yep, I have the exact same receiver as in this vid and it is three years old and the sound all of a sudden just stopped working. I could trick it into to working by turning it off and on a few times but now that is no longer working. Something like this should last 20 years at least. What piece of sh*t company, I'm never buying anything from them again.

I have a TX-NR808 AV receiver and I couldn't get the audio to work. I had my computer HDMI plugged into the back of the receiver in the pc slot and than had another HDMI cord going from my television to the out main arc slot which is found at the back of the receiver. I also have a analogy cable plugged my headphone jack on my computer into the PC audio analogy at the back of the receiver I than made sure I had my LISTENING MODE in DIRECT OR PURE AUDIO. I than got a hairdryer to add some heat at the top of the amp as it hadn't been used in a while so thought it may give the mechanical stuff a kick start. IT NOW GOES AND I HAVE NO MORE PROBLEMS!!

man, I thought mine is the only one but found out most of the Onkyo receivers have the same problem from all over the world. Onkyo must do something about this or they will go bankrupt. I am not going to purchase any Onkyo anymore. dame Onkyo give me so much headache and took a lots of my time. Onkyo sent a replacement hdmi-board to the service center. They installed it in my receiver but this only fixed the sound, the network was still not working. It probably wasn't a good board, and said they couldn't get another replacement board. So the service center contacted onkyo to ask what to do next. This was 25 days ago, they still haven't gotten a reply...

I didn’t think the the factory reset worked so I gave up. However, I sat down with the receiver on am/fm and and started watching my TV with the TV speakers on and after waiting a while the radio just started playing by itself. The receiver must needed time to cycle through the reset. I hooked back up my optical cord and everything was working like before. Factory reset:(holding vcr/DVR and on/standby then when you see “clear” press on/stand by again)

It seems that Onkyo have a common fault at the three years mark, my 606 & my NR909 had the same audio problem, the second time it was repaired on warranty. In three years time, when it breaks again I'm NOT buying another Onkyo!

Yes i will never ever agian buy Onkyo crap shit again. First time Onkyo 805 and the remote control stopped to work after 2 years. I bought Onkyo 818 and it just stopped working for no reason just after 3 years and no changes or reset could fixing it. It is impossible to get sound or to make audyssey to start just like in your video. For this price class the reciever should work for minimum 10-20 years, if it breaks down after just 3 years with very little use it is worse than chinese cheap low budget quality. Next time it will be Yamaha or Denon. I used stereo receiver in low budget class before from Denon for a third of the price of my Onkyo, and it worked excellent for over 10 years before i stopped used it, and it is still working, but i don´t use it so it is in he basement for now.

It is the DTS chip on the HDMI board. Try using a flood light to heat the chip if the speakers start working that means that it is the DTS chip. Since this is common Onkyo will replace it for free! (one time only)!!

My Onkyo HTR90 just got broke 2 days ago.. no sound, but the previous broke 3 hdmi ports because of a electrical flactuation due to the stormy weather, caused by strong lightning... RIP onkyo HTR90 2010 - dec. 20, 2020 😔

Hi all, well I do have the same problem and I performed some troubleshooting on it... With no real success. What I found is that the receiver is sometime starting in a correct maner and sometime not. Maybe you can observe the same behaviour... : When starting the receiver I seein the setup menu that I cannot see the "network setup" and "USB setup". I just can select it... Sometime (but it's very rare) when I start the receiver those both menu are available and the sound works... So I presume that a part of the mainboard is not starting in a proper maner... The next time that the USB setup menu is available I will try a firmware update but I don't think that it will really help... Does someone have the same issue?

same here. Onkyo tx-nr609 bought in 2013. it's the hdmi board. no speaker symbols are shown. try to hold down VCR source button on the unit while pushing the Power button on the unit. it should say "clear" after a moment and turn off. now it's back to factory settings. this should work fine for a day or even a week. but after a few times it will be broken again and not work. you will have to get a replacement. I'm now trying to call them for 5 days and couldn't get anyone on the phone!!!

Update: Onkyo responded after a few weeks with authorization to return for repair. For the cost of shipping to the repair shop ($28) receiver is now back to original working conditions.

Ok to test the Hdmi Board as bad. Power button, turn it on, put the sound in Direct mode. Hold down the BD/DVD button at the same time press the power button the display will show "HDMI Use" press power button again "HDMI Ignore" you should have sound, I did. So now at least you can use it for something! Thanks.

Damn mine just took a dump on me. After i did a update it acted glitchy. That was two weeks ago and now i get no sound or internet. I called Onkyo tech support and before i can finish explaing he told me to send it that it has a internal issue. I have had it for 1.5 years and should still be covered under warranty i hope. Oh boy. ... exactly same thing just happened to me this morning. Been playing up recently. No sound - crackling on rear channels. Until today could resolve issue be power cycling. Now that doesn't work and network died. ( all new menus disabled & no no activity on my router) This has to be a design fault Onkyo. You should fix this guys. Sent email to support center. hi, i solved this problem as simple as baking cookies. i removed the hdmi board (thats were the hdmi connectors are) placed the board in my siemens kitchen oven set the temperature to 220 degrees celsius wait until the temp is 220 degrees, then let it bake for 3,5 minutes turn the oven off, open the door and let it cool re assemble the bord and it should work fine now the problem is cold contcts of the capacitors, the high temperature oven fix resolves this by reflowing the connections. hope this is usefull

i had the same issue. HDMI board has a BGA chip with bad soldering. Onkyo repairs this for free as 3 of my recievers 709 and 809 had this issue. You can get past this issue with a workaround but it disables HDMI totally . power reciever off, hold BD/DVD and press power, then still holding bd/dvd press power, until it says HDMI board:ignore, 3 seconds later you should hear a click. The reciever shouild put out sound, but only in direct mode or pure audio mode, and usb and net wont work.

just google "onkyo loss of audio customer care" or something like that, its a painless process and they even send a box and pay for shipping both ways. (which is nice because my 809 is a heavy beast, about almost 40 pounds). also my parents TX-SR606 had the hdmi issue but it wasnt loss of audio, rather the HDMI board had faulty capacitors, and Onkyo replaced the board and it's been working a charm.

Please do some more research, everyone, before flaming Onkyo. Onkyo had a bad electrical engineer for a time, and a lot of the NR series have this fault due to this person not following procedure and not originally baking the SM HDMI boards for the correct amount of time. He has been fired and Onkyo will fix this problem, warranty or not, free of charge.

Mitchell Barentsen Free of charge = without any charge: repair, shipment and so on... Thats not the case, just read the comments below. Also Onkyo could/should post a note in their support section, but there is nothing. So blaming onkyo is definetely not wrong!

Same problem here. Onkyo TX-NR609 about two and a half years old. No sound and no network.

Same here, 609 - 2.5 years old, no sound no network, took it for a repair(god bless 3 year warranty).I guess HDMI boadrd problem.. If it happens again, I will never buy another Onkyo product again.

now my tx nr609 is showing the same problem. no speaker indication. audessy test...nothing working. too bad. had a problem with HDMI inputs 2 months back. and now no sound.

After having the same problem I contacted onkyo support and they offered to fix it for free, even though mine was out of warranty for a month. All I had to pay for was the shipping to the onkyo service center. They replaced the hdmi board but this only fixed the sound, not the network. Since a new hdmi board isn't available (no eta on delivery, probably all used up in repairs), they asked onkyo for a commercial solution (refund or trade-in for different model). I'm still waiting for their reply.

On the inside look for a dts chip near the back right and apply extreme heat.

It's only a temporary fix. The problem will come back again after a few weeks. Dts chip needs to be replaced. Well known issue on Pioneer models of that era as well.

I called Onkyo even though my warranty was up 3 months over they gave me a center to bring my receiver to fix.

I have the same problem here as well. Won't buy Onkyo again that's for sure. Had the receiver for just under 2 years.

Same bug with Onkyo TX-NR555 Onkyo is just shit. This is why it is so cheap and stuffed with features.

I have the same problem on my 2 year old tx-nr807 for a week now. What I think is wrong is that the HDMi board is broken and you/we need a new card or replace the capacitors on the board. One thing is for sure, I will never bye Onkyo again....I paid 10.000,- kr and only after 2,5 year I have to spend 3000,-kr on it....no way, never Okyo again
