Like you just want to read the lesson transcript? Study.com allows you to do that. Or something like Monarch if you don't mind a Christian program. Most of the others are going to have the video play through before you can move on. There are other options to homeschooling though. It doesn't all have to be online, or all online, or the same program for each subject. There are a lot of options.

I used khan academy after highschool. I took a placement test for college and landed in remedial math I wouldn't even get credit for. I spend a year working on my own through khan academy and held off on paying for classes. When i took the placement test again, I was able to take a higher math class than I was required to. I now use khan for my 9 yo homeschooler that struggles with math like me, and needs everything broken down and visualized for her. I agree 100% it isn't geared toward homeschoolers and is a great tool for some kids. My 12 year old on the other hand, is a walking calculator. Khan bores her to death because it moves so slow. She grasps math concepts too quick for khan, it just won't work for her.

Thanks for sharing online curriculum. We all prefer working offline for the most part and only use Teaching Textbooks as of right now, but I'm needing to find some options for one of my kids to work independently so I'm glad I found your reviews. Everyone always shares boxed curriculum (which is great) but sometimes you need to outsource some things. I will say I am a little surprised, I would have guessed IXL would be the worst pick lol. Two years ago we enrolled in a virtual charter school and they pushed IXL really hard on my then 3rd grader and we both HATED it. It felt like it brought a new meaning to the term "busy work". It just felt like a never ending quiz lol. Where as we have used Khan Academy here or there and have been happy with it but maybe that's because we use it as a supplemental resources and not a complete curriculum.

After doing a more thorough review of IXL on my channel, I do agree it's not so much a homeschooling program, more of a way to practice skills. @@sheltershowcase My girls use saxon math, Rod and staff grammar, Spelling workout and for everything else they use Memoria Press and we are very happy with that. MP has done great things for them and we utilize their video lessons for some subjects. With my oldest son (4th grade but with reading and writing delays, from dyslexia and fine motor weakness) I'm still playing with finding the right fit for him. Currently He uses math with confidence, Elemental Science (we have their classical series and some of the unit studies) and curiosity chronicals for history which is great. Language arts is what we are struggling to find the right fit with. What I originally planned didnt end up being the great fit I thought it would be so for now we use the memories press literature study guides and grammar. He also uses writing with ease, spelling connections, and two programs from logic of english called sounding out the sightwords and rhythm of handwriting. We are starting Touch Type Read and Spell today. It cover a few language arts topics and typing and I've been looking into other programs like night zookeeper for language arts and trying to find some classes on outschool but we'll see.

For OLDER kids: I wanted to offer my many years experience with Miacademy/Always Ice Cream (the girls-only version). My daughter has been doing it for years. When she was younger, ie 2nd grade it was great! Now that she is in 6th grade and her interest have changed, I can say that the moderators REALLY cater to the young kids. There is a huge difference between a kindergartener and an 8th grader; interests and development. My daughter’s interests are constantly being denied, taken down, etc because “…young members”. (Ie Gacha characters (not inappropriately made), FNAF, etc) I fully understand and respect the moderation, but there is a massive imbalance in taking into consideration the age differences. I monitor my child extensively online and much of what she has been denied of is just silly & not justifiable. This has made her not enjoy it as much and honestly, me too. Our membership ends Dec 15th and this has me seeking elsewhere.

I disagree! Time4Learning is far from the best, it’s very kiddie and has many glitches and mistakes. It’s very boring and very broad. Not to mention as a parent you have to create schedule etc and do your own report cards. Acellus aka Power homeschool is a comprehensive curriculum that keeps the kids engaged, it’s very advanced in the sense that if your child has difficulty, it automatically provides help videos before child moves on to next lesson. Also, after every lesson there’s a short quiz to test understanding. You can check daily progress and retake test to review and earn better grade. It provides report cards and certificates of completion, all you have to do is print. All in all, it really frees the parent from being on top of things everyday and your kid is still on track.

You are not alone. There's so much out there now. It is overwhelming. But, you can do this. Remember that homeschooling was the reality for most of human history, not kids in a classroom. I'm more minimalist, so I stick with the basics: Reading, Writing (Language Arts), Math, and Citizenship is required in my state. Go to HSLDA to find laws for your state if you're in the US. After that, my kids explore their interests, ask questions, and we do spiritual/life skills and lots of read-a-louds, park and other activities, etc. To simplify, the only things I have scheduled regularly are spiritual and the basics/required by law to not feel so overwhelmed. You and your kids are capable! ❤️

I've used almost every one of these except for the miacademy. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. When I was homeschooling my daughter for 1st grade we used powerhomeschool and supplemented with time4learning. Kahn academy has Wonderful teaching videos. We used them a lot with the older kiddos. IXL is used not only by homeschool parents but it's also used in my children's public school system. Math u see is wonderful. Teaching textbooks. I taught both of my girls how to read with a program called funnix( the lady that wrote teach your child how to read in 100 easy lessons developed this computer program). My advice to any one new going into homeschooling is find your child's strengths and weaknesses and then research the curriculum that will work for them it may not be just one. You may have to pull from different places. When I was homeschooling( and may do this year again for my struggling son) I used power homeschool & also supplemented with outside sources. Power homeschool keeps up with their grades and can also print out a report card that I can turn into the schoolboard at the end of each year. Also as the video pointed out its accredited so if we choose once they get into high-school we can use that option to obtain a diploma.

Some kids honestly just don't like doing online school. There are other options! You could do a mix of paper textbooks and online programs. For instance use Khan Academy for math, maybe a couple fun online reading programs but then also do print curriculum and hands on learning as well.

IXL is the best to assess your child's level in my opinion. They have the real-time diagnostics tool which is pretty neat. Use the 7 day free trial and have your child spend some time using that tool. It will show a score like 200 or 300 which equates to 2nd or 3rd grade, etc. Then I would go with Miacademy or Time 4 Learning if you are just starting and want something all inclusive.

Curious as to why someone would want to homeschool their children.
@AmandaMelrose

Oh my gosh, there are SO many reasons, and they're different for every family, but here are some of the more common reasons: more time as a family, flexibility, to be able to provide a personalized education, to provide a better education than the local public school, safety, mental health, for other health reasons, to give our kids more time to pursue their interests, I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot because the list is long!

Thank you for taking the time to create this valuable vontent. My 9 year old and I have been using time4learning and it has become utterly unbearable. It is very dated and poorly considered. The very childish nature of the characters is distracting, and we absolutely hate having to sit through the same tacky animations ad nauseum in order to progress through the lessons, it is asinine. Looking forward to trying some of these options instead.

Khan academy isn't really an online school. If you are homeschooling then your parents can just issue your diploma and decide you're ready to "graduate" but if you're looking for something accredited that's going to actually issue you a diploma, you will need something different

Hi! Thank you so much for this video! It's very helpful. I had a question for you. My son goes to public school. I just need an online tool that will be a supplement in addition to school curriculum. He needs to practice focusing independently and i want him to improve his test taking skills. So basically i want him to practice again whatever was taught in school so that he can be on top of things and in some cases ahead of class. Which online program do you suggest?
@AmandaMelrose
7 ай бұрын
IXL because you can align it to their school curriculum that they're using. It's already used in a lot of schools. I have a 7 day free trial code and also a full video on my channel. Or you can use Khan Academy which is free. Many schools use that too. But just for practice I think you'll like IXL.

@AmandaMelrose

Anyone can take them but you would need to determine based on where you live if the curriculums are suitable to satisfy requirements. For instance, a lot of these cover U.S. history, because that is something that is big in U.S. schools. You country may have requirements that these programs don't include.

Time 4 Learning and Miacademy definitely do. I'm not sure about Power Homeschool but I assume they would. Adventure academy is not really a homeschool program so not that (although there is a new program by the same creator called Homeschool Plus that should). Khan may for Math. IXL lets you view the skills by state requirements although their program is more of a skill practice than a full program, you will still have to teach the curriculum from the textbooks but they have their own IXL ones or you can use other books that align with the program.

I'm not 100% sure for the older kids. When we were using it for 3rd grade I don't remember seeing anything I had to grade myself. I am planning to do a full review of it for high school soon. But as for the diploma, this is an online homeschooling program, not a school, so they do not issue a diploma. If you are homeschooling, in most states you keep the transcripts and issue the diploma yourself. That's how homeschooling works and most employers and colleges don't care about a diploma, it's just something you hang on a wall. They DO care about the transcripts though. If you're wanting a program that takes care of all of that for you, you probably want to look into an online private school, not a homeschooling program. I do have a video of some great online virtual schools on my channel.
