I did my CC at Imperial Valley College. It was surprisingly difficult to navigate the system in order to transfer. I really dedicated myself to understanding it. I am sure this is one of the reasons I was one of the few people I knew from CC who successfully transferred. It was very difficult and took much trial and error to find the sole counselor at the CC who knew anything at all about transferring to a 4-year. Obviously there is selection bias in these numbers. Many students who attend CC are generally underachievers, some go to CC just to bide time and not disappoint their parents, and rarely some attend to scam financial aid. CC was a tremendous benefit for me, that I would never have chosen if it wasn't the only option I had to get ahead. I graduated a UC debt free. Though if my 18 year old self had the choice, he would have picked to go straight in to university and take on debt. I'm glad I had a mediocre hs GPA that forced me to CC first.

Community colleges are cheap and accept everyone, many people enroll on impulse and then drop out shortly after. Universities get more committed students because they are pricier and have higher standards for enrollment. I'm in my final year of CC, and within a few weeks into every semester, the parking lots at my school get way emptier from all the people dropping. Sadly, you can't force commitment. Some people just don't have the drive.

I went to a CC in Virginia and this is 100% true. I had a biology class that started with ~25 students and by the end of the semester there were only 8-10 students left. Some of which failed the class or got a low grade. At my local CC only around 32% graduates with an associates degree and not everyone gets a high GPA. This was good for me because I had little competition and transferred to a good university that offered me a scholarship.

One other factor is cost. It is cheaper to attend a community college than an university. University tuition is so expensive, if only they can make it cheaper. Then a lot more students would attend university.

I transferred to a CSU after attending a local city college. From what I've seen, most students at the city college had little motivation and most were there because they had nothing else to do. A lot were there because they got paid by FAFSA. The level of commitment did change once you took harder STEM classes. The higher you went, the more serious students and professors you were surrounded by.

Amazing how this can be spun to look like a bad thing. the reason why it's hard to transfer is because you need specific "UC Units" to apply in time to transfer at the 2 year mark. Remedial math and english, which are the most common classes people are placed in at cc, aren't UC units and you need to clear them as pre reqs until you can take math and english classes for your major/eligible for transfer. Then some students take GE classes that are only articulated to qualify for CSUs and not UCs, and for major requirements some CCs don't offer classes that qualify for articulation with UC equivalent classes. Only a few counselors are ever really helpful and there's no requirement for students to meet with a counselor since people go to CC for a lot of reasons besides university transfer.

The counseling department is a hit or miss. I had more than a handful that only handed me a piece of paper and said “good luck.” I was fortunate to find a wonderful counselor at Continuing Education that helped navigate the transfer. Funny enough, the counseling department placed him there because he actually did his job and the other counselors didn’t like him. Forever grateful to him.

I attended Victor Valley College and then transferred to the University of Hawai'i and graduated in '19 with a BS in Electrical Engineering and a BS in Physics. Transfer process was pretty easy, if you ask me. It just all comes down to how committed a student is to earn that degree. Yes, I understand finances play a huge part because I, too, am in debt to student loans. As long as you don't give up and continually work to get the best job possible, those student loan payments won't haunt your future. It all comes down to the individual and their mindset. Nothing rewarding ever comes easy.

I used the community college system to obtain units needed for a supplemental credential to my existing credential transferring was not my primary goal. Others are going to learn a skill that can be achieved with a class or few classes and transferring is not the ultimate goal.

It probably looks as if colleges have no incentive to be efficient, and what @fozzir says is sensible. However, it's different in some places. I teach at a CSU, and we're under a *lot* of pressure from Sacramento to be efficient, teach large course sections, and get students out as quickly as we can. They make a big deal of the 4-year graduation rate, as if we've failed when students take 4.5 or 5 years to finish, even if they were slowed down by something really good for them such as an internship.

How many are supposed to make it? when I transferred for engineering in the tour group I was the only one who wasn't probational. You can tell in high school that some people are never going to college. Community college is for people who were around circumstances where they are surrounded by drunks and stuff. it's different because you work on your own. They're not supposed to transfer. Those are the people holding certain people back. I have reasons, such as my parents are immigrants and didn't go to american schools. No one in my family went to college. i was working blind in elementary school. They don't write book reports and crap in foreign school. they teach math well and basic writing skills for people to work. They don't have assignments like write a paper about your summer vacation. Or whatever they do now, like write about your gender. That's not work. The idea of school is training people for work. What percentage of community college athletes transfer to a division 1 school or make it to the NBA? there aren't that many Steve Francis's? How many people from high school get a college degree? they're not supposed to.
@philip7833

You are completely wrong. Community College is not for “surrounded by drunks,” community college is a cheaper option for people who cannot afford to take college classes. “Those are the people holding other people back.” According to your logic, community college is for people “surrounded by drunks,” so if they are all of the same circumstances and “not supposed to transfer” then how are they holding certain people back, unless you admit that community college is a an affordable resource for those wishing to transfer. The idea of school is not for training people how to work. The idea of school is to give people knowledge which can or cannot be applied certain jobs. I don’t have time to break down your post, but your entire tone sounds very bigoted and elitist. I don’t know why you are trying to insinuate that community college students are inferior

The educational system in the US is not great. Not all schools are equal, especially in California they don't teach students real life skills, they graduate highschool with having the knowledge to proceed a cc. Unfortunately for others they need a full time job right outta high school to help their parents with the rent and bills. It's difficult to balance work and cc. In addition having a university degree doesn't guarantee a great paying career. I known people that learn a trade and are making more $ then a college with a masters. So at the end it all depends what the person mayors is.

You want me to spend time with a professor that has a class that requires me to complete not only for its units before they were ridiculous math requirement for CSU transfer is the most utter useless requirement in college education transfer because from my experience I feel like I’m being dealt with incompetent math professors and I’m only taking what liberal studies math. I’ve taken statistics that sucked that I took algebra that sucked you’re probably gonna ask him. Why didn’t you get any help and I did I went to the tutoring center that was provided by my community college and they barely raised the hair or noticed me even when I asked for help like or at least for the CSU transfer requirement remove the math class requirement the general class, if it’s not connected to any other major, it’s just ridiculous. I’ve lost my sanity my mental health my emotions. The only thing that keeps me happy and enduring is that I’m trying to change my standard of living that will pass through, but if that’s not enough, guess what I guess. I’m not good enough for universities, I feel like they put where at least CSU is putting up a barrier for all college students or maybe just particular that’s dealing with this issue because I’ve dealt with too many incompetent math teachers that expect too much time other students and give too much homework with expecting little while at least a lot with the littlest effort by our professors, my God, my God why do you have to put us through this? I’m just trying to make it through life. I just want to live a good life I want to own house and have stability as well security who gave CSU and the other universities the right to the Termine my education and what is required by me to fulfill my major in my major political science. Why the hell do I need a freaking math class to transfer? It’s just dumb and terrible and ignorant all things terrible like California why do you have to make my life more terrible than it needs to be besides the education? Do I have to join the military just to gain some stability or security in my life? Is that really my only option if I’m such a dumb dumb with math

This story would have been much better if there was some detail as to what the specifics were that were holding students back from transferring to the UC or CSU system. I went through the "CC-to-CSU" process decades ago and didn't find it particularly hard, the transferrable classes were designated in the CC's course catalog and again in each semester's class schedules. You could also compare the descriptions of the courses in each college's catalog with one another to be sure. It wouldn't surprise me if the digital systems used these days make it more complex rather than made it easier to figure out; funny how that happens so often these days.
