Excellent vid James. I usually carry two knives when in the wilds. A full tang knife like my Gerber Strongarm for wood processing and hacking away at anything. The second knife will be a folder or maybe a multi tool like my Leatherman Wave for most other tasks or food prep. If hiking I normally just take my trusty 30 yo swiss army knife which has never let me down. In fact this one has gutted more fish, opened more cans and pulled more corks than any of my other tools combined. Cheers from Down Under! 🍺👍

The Gerber Ultimate Survival Knife. Heavy duty-ish fixed blade, full tang, hammer pommel, semi serrated, ambidextrous sheath, incl sharpener, incl ferro rod, incl whistle, good enough steel, and good grip. It also has features that make this knife capable of making it into a solid spear (more than just about any knife I've seen).

I have been hunting and fishing for over 30 years . I don't understand why anyone would go into the woods with just one knife. I always have a pocket knife, a folding hunter(buck 110), and a fix blade. I also carry a folding saw and sometimes a small axe. I don't use my fixed blade all that much . I use my pocket knife and my saw the most. But I do like the added insurance of extra cutting tools.

So true. Most people with experience take multiple blades unless they are training and forcing themselves to get by with just one. Even on a light trek, I always bring at least one backup blade. Thanks for watching and for your comment, you have some excellent choices there.

The best knife to have in a survival situation is the one you have with you when you find yourself in a survival situation being as they aren’t planned your probably not going to have multiple knives about your person. The 18th century long hunters or trappers you mentioned would have carried a butchers or trade knife on their belt a folding knife similar to an Opinel in their Haversack along with the two knives they would carry a tomahawk or hatchet on their belt, the belt knife they would use to butcher meat and prepare game so as to keep it as keen as possible the pocket knife was used to whittle anything he needed, indeed there are stories of men carving replacement stocks for their gun with the pocket knife 👍🏻

Yes, I thought about including a traditional skinning blade in the list, but that is something that requires a long term situation and larger game as well as the fact that in most of our outdoor activities, the blades I mentioned will do the job just fine. Good comment and thanks!

I love the little Buck lite fixed blade , had to grind a 90 degree spine on it , it takes a screaming sharp edge , but at 3 inches long it’s a fuzz short for my tastes . Great little camp knife though , full tang and thin enough that it makes a pretty good camp knife.

I do like your choices but for me one of those I would like to see one big knife something close to a machete say an El Chete :) enjoyed my friend and yes always some way to sharpen your knifes. if don't have away to keep them sharp you might as well get you a sheath for a butter knife

Good video. It's funny I usually carry 4 knives similar to you. I have inexpensive Mossy Oak HD belt knife for batoning and chopping, a Mora Companion or Craftline , a folding pocket knife like a Buck Copperhead or Crkt, and a Gerber Multi-tool. Also I usually carry a filet knife when carry fishing equipment along. I have a small sharping stone in my pack for touching up my knifes.

We bought a Gerber Strongarm knife recently and tried it out while making a rocket stove. I love the knife! It rings my bell - sooo gooood :D We also used a Klex survival axe, and a Silky survival saw. We found those tools to be really good. They felt nice in the hand, had good edges, and were a nice weight for what they do.

Excellent video. Very good points. When I used to work a job with extensive travel, I had at least two knives. I sometimes still carry two knives (although they are folding knives so I guess they are already broken LOL). I can definitely see the benefit of carrying all the knives you pointed out. I am usually in more urban areas but you never know when you may find yourself in a survival situation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Great video brother James. After watching your video and seeing the comments I find I'm not so odd after all. On my person I carry 4 knives. A Smith and Wesson folding Damascus steel with clip. A gift from my little brother. Quick access for letter and box opening ect. The smallest SAK, a little larger SAK and a large SAK which is an older " Officer". That is my main knife. It has everything I need on it including a magnifying lens which will start a fire if the sun is shinning. On my pack I carry a Basic Mora, an Old Hickory butcher knife and my beast which is a Gerber Strongarm. The strongarm is nearly indestructible and keeps a good edge. Good choice for a one knife carry. I also have a Gerber Multi tool in my bag and several sharpeners. I have always been fascinated with knives since I was a small child. My Dad had a saying. He said if my knife won't shave you, I'll give it to you. If it's not sharp it's not a knife, it's a club.

Great video, in truth I do not know as I have not spent enough time in the wilds with a knife. I'd take my Buck as it is the most familiar one to me and leave the fancy Finnish ones at home. I'd take two. The big Buck and my small Gerber folder. Duh! Three. Medical folder as well

Having a knife you're familiar and comfortable with is about as important as having the "right" knife. Often, that's what makes a knife the "right" one. People who swear by a knife have usually spent a lot of time with it.

Thanks Kay. I agree. A lot have fancy blades in their bug out bags that they have barely used. I'll go with what I know and use. Mora would likely be with me anyway as I'd likely not get into the wilds without my wife

@@WayPointSurvival - thanks heaps for the videos you do. I know you don't get a lot of coverage compared to other channels and subjects, but I appreciate your effort and the content of the videos you make. While I'm always on the lookout for kit that will make my life easier in a survival situation, I'm becoming more aware that, as you say, "owning the skills", is more important than having nice tools. I'm becoming increasingly aware, with your channel's assistance, that I need to PRACTICE my skills regularly, which is something I'm not doing often enough at the moment. As recent events around the world have shown, chances are I won't have time or opportunity to go home and grab my BoB, so having basic tools on me constantly is important, as is regular practice.

I use my S&W tactical folding knife on a daily basis, for three reasons. It holds an edge really well, works in a multitude of situations, and I just adore the tanto point! (Ok, that part is just for the coolness level!) I am a retired person who spends most days at home, so I just use my knife for household situations (from cutting twine to vegetables) so it’s probably not getting a real workout! But I do have a question. I just recently bought a Morakniv companion for use as my main fixed blade, and haven’t used it much at all yet, so I’m curious about your opinion on these Mora knives. I bought it because I had heard such good reviews by folks who own one. What do you feel they are best for? And what are they NOT good for?
@WayPointSurvival
6 жыл бұрын
They are superb at wood carving, general camp chores and camp cooking tasks. They are relatively easy to sharpen and hold a good edge. They are a fine knife and would be an excellent choice to put on your belt or around your neck for just about any thing. Thank you for watching and for your comment and question!

WayPoint Survival ok, I think I got the right knife then. I’d love a K-Bar, for the cool factor, but honestly, I’m the person most likely to feel comfortable with the routine camp chores, and so the Mora is prolly perfect for me. Thank you for the input!
