Language preservation is so very important! Language encodes culture and a way of thinking. So, preserving your language preserves your culture. And it preserves that way of thinking unique to your culture, unique to you. I wish you great success!

I want to learn. My dad was raised on the Seneca reservation in Buffalo. I'm only 1/4 Onondaga, but want to learn the language my great grandmother knew. She passed away and I don't think anyone in my family knows how to speak Onondaga.

I met Audrey Shenandoah in 1991, at a symposium at Middlebury College, where I was a senior. The Dalai Lama was one of the other guests. He and Audrey both had that same _presence,_ a sense that they were people with a strong connection to more of the spiritual realm. But while the Dalai Lama had this aura of calm around him, Audrey Shenandoah had and aura of _strength_ that she seemed to be pulling from the ground. She gave a blessing, a thanksgiving, to the four directions, to nature, to … well, it's been 30 years, so I don't remember many details. But I *do* remember _feeling it,_ in every muscle, in every nerve, right into my bones. And I remember taking her profusely afterwards, and felt that I was in the presence of one of the most spiritually powerful people in my lifetime. I will always remember that, and remember Audrey Shenandoah.

native American culture and history is my favorite thing in history to learn about. its so unfair how my ancestors treated the native people especially when if it wasn't for the natives they all would have died

I'm French-Canadian by blood but am an American. My mom has a little bit of one of the Iroquois tribes' blood: not sure which. I love languages and find this encouraging to see. Keep these languages alive. Translating is a bad method for teaching a language: this teaches you more "about" the language than actually teaching you to think in the language. It complicates things because it adds an extra mental step.
