Good translation, but I think you can brush up the appearance of the subtitles a bit. The main things are: 1. Wider margins - your subtitles currently collide with KZitem's player controls and some onscreen text 2. Better font - the one you're using has oddly wide character spacing. Is it an English font, or are you using an Asian typeface that also has Latin characters? 3. Timing - try to avoid "blinks" between subtitles. If the timing is close, just have the end time of the previous subtitle match the start time of the next 4. Missing lines - I understand why you skipped super chat thanking or filler words, but viewers will be confused when parts of the video are simply unsubtitled with no reason. You can throw in a "So, um..." to have something onscreen during filler words, and if you don't want to include viewers' names in the subs, just write "[thanking super chats]" or something so the viewer knows what's happening. I have a general guide on subtitle appearance here: lyger.github.io/scripts/guides/subtitling.html Apologies if I came off harsh, but the VTuber scene needs more competent translators and competent translations deserve polished-looking subtitles.

No worries, I appreciate the feedback. I'm using [UD Digi Kyokasho NP-B] for all my fonts at the moment, thinking that I might have to use kana or kanji somewhere and this was one of the few default fonts that had a Japanese word on it. I've actually read the post on your TL channel about translating before I started posting. I'm completely new to subtitling and video editing and I think I jumped on this way too early without further research.
@primisto7530
4 жыл бұрын
@@user-uo4tj3ir8p i'm just gonna jump in as a frequent viewer of Vtuber subs to say that, while i can see where lyger is coming from, your subtitles are still above the rest. correct translation and especially correct grammar are more important than the appearence of subtitles, so you don't actually have to feel like you messed up the subs. they're good as they are. while obviously there is always room for improvement, the average viewer is thankful for any good translator out there^^
@rrr-mi9kv

n9訳 Ah, yes, Japanese fonts are designed primarily to make Japanese look good, and the Latin characters are designed to fit in with Japanese text, which means they’re a little awkward for text that is primarily English. See how much space is around the apostrophe, for example. If you need to include Japanese text, you can always switch the font for just that part. If you’re using Aegisub, this is easy enough to do (there’s a font button above the main text edit box). For your main font, I’d suggest something from the Google fonts page I linked in the guide. To be clear, most of my advice is nitpick level. You uploaded a video with an accurate translation and readable subtitles, which is better than most similar channels. I just think some polish could really take it to the next level.

@@primisto7530 True , aesthetics can slowly be learned, but the ammount of broken english translators is off the roof. Honestly that's how I watch most streams when I'm at work, Japanese or not. I watched several foreign language streams to listen to how it's pronounced by the native speakers, as well as some accompanying noises as I work on something. Not that I don't want to watch it, but streams are like modern day radio shows, so I treat it as one. Besides, I don't have the patience to stay and watch a 6+ hours stream regardless of it being interesting or not to me.

As for the reality, I've noticed that most channels will generally have a dedicated fan translator if they can make it and we can generally see whats going on from that. if anything, give us a very basic idea and we can fill in the rest. I''m sure most vtubers have figured it out and are pretty respectful towards them but probably not all of them. I know Sora was doing an English stream and actually read her own translation in English on accident. She was having a pretty hard time with it so we all felt kinda bad.
