A comprehensive showcase of Oophaga pumilio's (aka strawberry poison dartfrogs) unique and complex parental behavior.
The male's role is to defend, monitor and hydrate fertilized egg clutches until the female decides it's time to transport the tadpoles.
Most of the time the tadpoles are transported individually to water collected in small pools, such as in the axils of bromeliads or in this case glass tubes.
The male will try to make sure the road to these pools is safe for the female and he will communicate this by singing (blowing his vocalsac).
Then,
for approximately six weeks until tadpoles metamorphose,
the mother frog returns every few days to feed tadpoles with unfertilized eggs. After, the froglet is ready to take his first steps into this world, grow until it's mature, find a partner and repeat this entire cycle.
Enjoy the footage,
Tijl.
