For Opel Ampera, remove fuse number F8 from Fuse Box, start the car and then turn off, reinsert the fuse, you get a German stupid message - ignore and you're good to go. The fuse box is near the steering wheel, on the left side as you open the door and F8 fuse is - as you look, on the left row, the forth starting from top to bottom.

Fecioru Daniel This is the solution. Same thing happened to me when the car was about 4 years old. I luckily figured out the reseating of the F8 fuse myself, but we should try to make your comment the top comment for all Ampera / Chevy Volt owners to see.

I had exactly the same problem. The same error and the same clicking sound from the wheel. Removing the steering wheel's fuse and trying to start once without the fuse fixed the problem. So try to remove the fuse. Try to start once without the fuse. Shut down. Re-install the fuse and start again.

It happened only once for me. There was also a free software update for the car. That may have had something to do with this problem. I got a letter from Opel and they asked me to visit at the nearest Opel service for the free update.

Tuomas Hautakangas I got a free update also, which unbricked my Ampera, but the 'Service Steering Column Lock' still kept appearing once per month, luckily without bricking the car, so the dealer replaced the Steering Column Lock. However, that didn't make the 'Service Steering Column Lock' message to go away. I still get it about once per month and every time I see it, I fear that the next time I turn on the car, it will be bricked. So, the software update revived my bricked Ampera, but it didn't make the message go away, neither did the replacement of the lock. I didn't get my car bricked again so far, but that may just be a matter if time :-(

Andrej Potokar Also, my friend, who also owns an Ampera, is getting the 'Service Steering Column Lock' message about once per month, didn't get the car bricked yet and I'm hearing other owners of Ampera are getting it to. As a matter of fact, the dealer's Ampera got bricked exactly the same way. I think this is a wider problem, which Opel/GM doesn't admit and Opel/GM should give us a solution whether our Amperas still have warranties or not. Mine is also out of warranty, however, since the problem didn't go away after the software update and lock replacement, I demanded the problem stay in unsolved state in their database, so if I get my car bricked again, it will be a matter of unresolved warranty claim.

Andrej Potokar Also, one very important piece of information! The dealer found NO error codes in the car's computer error log, so this error message or the bricking of the car, never gets written in the car's error log, which the dealer access via the OBD2 with the computer.

Hi. How is car working today? I have this same issue right now. Gear is locked to Park and yellow motor light is on. Opel dealership changer steering lock module or something but it didn't helped. Also tried new 12V battery, but no. Do you think that fuse F8 might be the problem? Any tip helps!

Yes. I parked my Ampera in my garage and after I turned it off, the error message appeared. The car only runs in diagnostic mode, and can't be moved :-(

Andrej Potokar The car can be turned off only by pressing the On/Off button without having the brake pedal pressed.
