The science of gravy! One can fiddle about and faff and swap and compare and observe all sorts of differences with this sort of thing, but I have learned over time that smaller cabs & speakers are happier with the back off.

Absolutely agree. But imo it has to do with the genre of music you play. For pop/rock I like it with an open back; it breaths more, something you don't want for metal (right in the face that is). For solo at any genre the open back please

It definitely sounded better with the back open. It has something to do with the latency of the sound waves. No doubt you could extend the experiment to look at speaker size, speaker quality, cabinet size, cabinet material, room acoustics, type of microphone, etc. You may also have seen a video by Circle of Tone on Jerry Cantrell's recording rig for Alice in Chains' Dirt album. Jerry put a mic on the back of the cabinet as well as the front.

As a young man i used to take the backs of my crappy speakers on my sound system, because i wanted more bass, (yes i know) removing the back does not increase the bass. But Try using the floor as the back so the speakers are facing up and you felt the bass a lot more alot like cinema surround bass boxes have the speaker facing the floor . So the bass travels. I have an old 15w marshall amp that doesn't work and tbh i never liked it. So i took the amp part out and just used the cab i boarded up the front part but left the back open because i agree with Dave small cabs don't breathe and you get too much low end. I now use the cab with my Boss Katana 100 head.

I have found that if a cab sounds very nasal, that opening the back can make it sounds broader and more even. On the close Mic, it isn't as obvious, but I can hear the change in the low end for sure. The Silverline is just the latest version of their TVP amps, which have always been really good.

Great video Mr Dave, really useful as well as interesting. With the close mic I certainly noticed a difference, let it breathe. Difference even more obvious on room mic but there was a clear difference with both examples. I have a Blackstar ID15TVP, the predecessor, with the same amp settings, effects, valve emulation and so on. It too is closed back. Not for much longer thanks to this helpful video.

Science with Dave .....I like it 👍🏼 I could definitely hear a difference when you had it close mic’d it was night and day, I was listening with good quality Bose headphones, I don’t know if that helps but to my ears I could hear a difference, and also when you spun the amp backfacing Massive success I’d say 👌🏼 I made this comment before your final thoughts aswell

The difference is very obvious in a room regarding bass. Also, the high frequencies are dispersed wider with an open back cab. Closed back cabs project like a laser beam.

In my opinion opened up and breathing fully is much better. It comes alive as a full breath of fresh air would let it. Seems like either opening the back as you did or having tuned ports in the front, creating a reflex may help also. Cheers.

I’m a closed back man because in my younger days I played my new powerful 6x9’s Jensen car speakers in my cars by putting them 🔊 ‘s by car rear window to help get a fuller tone. Then I got tired of them 6x9s sliding back & forth back overtime , so I made speaker boxes out of shoe boxes .. then it was holly molly it was an awesome full sound instead of that thin radio sound. So the moral of the story is whatever floats your boat , you can’t be wrong ..

I've done this on some amps and speakers and there are big dfferences in the room. And these amps often have way too much bass in an enclosure that's way too small to work well. Can't hear much of any of it coming through on youtube and dinky speakers here, but this is a good topic to show and tell about. The further options are, of course, tuned reflex enclosres and horns. But you don't see that much in guitar amps.

...and this is why I wish Barefaced Audio equipment were available here in the USA. Their design has a channeled back (layman's terms) that allows the low- and mid- range out of the box (and across the room) on their own terms... clarity preserved, no muddiness. Between open and closed, though, I definitely prefer the open box. Great video! EDIT: Apparently, they do ship now... I missed that update along the way. Guess I'll have to save up for one!

That reflecting internal sound is like adding flour to soup. Sometimes good, sometimes not, depending on the recipe or the song. I'd screw a handle on to your cutout, to ease switching. Fender put a fancy port on back of their GT 40 amps. Maybe make a couple alternate backplates to find a couple of sweet spots? Thanx for the educational experiments!

Yes, some cabs do better with being mic-ed up further away. And there is a significant difference between open and closed back cabs. Close mic-ing will pretty much only get you the speaker sound with little or nothing from the cab. The amount of low end in the tone stack is meant to be there. For the people with more strings on their guitars who like to invade the bass player's space.

Very interesting experiment. I started with this Silverline (and moved up to the 100 Head now). I was always amazed at how much low end this little combo produced. I never tried opening the back. Great experiment. Interestingly, the 100 watt 1x12 combo and the 100 watt 2x12 Stereo combo both have open backs but the 20 and 50 watt ones are closed. I presumed that was to enhance the low end in a smaller and smaller wattage amp. Hmmm? So now the question is: what is the best set up for the 100 watt Head. I presume you are playing it thru some of your cabinets that are probably 4x12 or 2x12 closed cabs. What do you think about what’s best for the head? Thanks again for your great videos!

Kind of makes sense to me. Going on all the decent stereo speakers I've had including my Jammo D265 which was made for bass have ports in them, so I'm assuming they are to release the bass. But I'm talking house stereo speakers so whether the theory is same idk.

I believe a closed back restricts the movement of the speaker cone making it less responsive to the signal and mutes higher frequencies. High frequencies can cancel out some of the lower frequencies, so if you reduce high frequencies with a closed back you're cancelling out fewer low frequencies. I built my 2x12 cab to be about 1/3rd op backed across the middle after watching some videos like this demonstrating a difference. There is definitely a difference. Closed back is less responsive to high frequencies, therefore fewer low frequencies are cancelled out.
