I just want to say thank you. Because of this channel I've learned so much about shaving. I grew up without a father and it was up to my mom to teach me about shaving. I started shaving as a teen in the mid 90's. She gave me a disposable razor and that was it. I was left to figure it out on my own. In my adult life I've been using the cheap shaving gel and whatever disposable was on sale. I hated shaving. The post shave irritation was so bad that I would only shave once a week at most. It sucked. I'm now in my 40's and finally did some research on shaving. You're channel popped up and I started watching. Because of you I got my first real razor. The Manscaped Plow 2.0. I also got Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream, Parker Large Alum Block, Nivea Shave Balm and , Personna Double Edge Razor Blades. Per you recommendations. And wow, for the first time in my life I had a good shaving experience. Now a few months later I added the Leaf Twig and I'm now able to shave daily. I'm still learning and I'm still improving. So thank you again for your channel and all that you do. I'm much happier and my face feels so much better. I wish I knew about safety razor years ago. This has been life changing. I can't thank you enough

Hi - I don’t have any open Combs but I’ve been using the Yates 921 with the normal M and H plates. So do you think an M plate with an open comb has the same effect as just using the H plate? I’ve wondered if it’s worth paying to get an open comb as well since i usually shave every 3-4 days (sometimes more or less frequently). Thanks! Mike

Also would an open comb on a Yates 921 with the H place just be maybe too aggressive? I’m using the Accuforge blades of that matters. Thanks, Mike

@@pstarkey001 thanks! Out of curiosity does the M plate with the comb come across as being as aggressive/efficient as the standard H plate with the scallops? I typically use the H plate and sometimes the M, but I really don’t want to go beyond the H in terms of aggressiveness. And sorry one last one, do you use the comb side for the entire shave or just the first pass? Thanks! Mike
@pstarkey001

M plate is slightly less aggressive/efficient. I typically have to do two passes with 5-6 days growth but if you're a daily shaver then should be fine. I only use comb on 1st pass.@@MikeMCT

I have just switched to a DE razor. The intention was to use it to head shave but i am practicing technique on my face first. After watching a few videos now, i can tell i do not have the right angle, just down to the sound. I think i may be a little scared of the razor. Shaving under the nose is also prooving tricky, did finish off with a cartridge razor in the end. Im sure i'll get the idea after a few more shaves.

Owning both, open comb isn’t going to be a difference between a ok shave and a holy grail shave. It helps a slight amount, but the blade gap, exposure, and well depth will make 10x as much of a difference as comb type. Take a super mild razor and make it open comb. Now take the most aggressive razor on the market ( ikon shavecraft tek (( closed comb))there won’t be any comparison.. I own a couple closed/open comb of the same razor and the difference just isn’t the same as a base plate with different dimensions.

So happened that I got my first OC (1920s Gillette Old Type) and tried it just before watching this. Compared to Rockwell plate 3, it was a very efficient first pass for 5 days of growth, but the second ATG pass was too efficient for my taste. Too much of alkohol based aftershave feedback. Maybe some better technique of handling lightweight Old Type could help, but I think I will reserve it for first passes of shaving 4+ days of growth. Also OC is great for shaping, as easier and safer alternative to shavette.

My experience is similar to yours. I recently purchased a Timeless stainless with long handle, open comb, scalloped head and .95mm blade gap. I've been shaving exclusively with a Merkur Futur for the last 15 years, primarily on setting 3, which I believe is a 1.35mm blade gap. Oddly, the Timeless feels like it gives me almost as close a shave as the Merkur on setting 3. It's kinda wierd and counterintuitive. Not sure if the open comb has anything to do with that, but maybe? One thing I am convinced of though with open comb vs. a solid bar design. I feel it makes for a slicker, smoother shave. I think it's because the open comb design allows all that lalther to get right up against the blade edge.

Question on using the alum block:when you say "nothing here" do you really mean you have no feedback at all or just a little but not worth mentioning compared to what you get where you really got some irritation?
