This presentation was part of the EDI and Academic Freedom conference organized by HxCanada and the McGill HxA Campus Community on April 20-21, 2023.
Scholars have been interested in the study of open-mindedness (OM) for centuries, yet questions remain about this multifaceted personality trait. This talk shares the results of a 2022 scoping study that reviewed 229 scientific articles on openness to ideas and its related psychological constructs. These constructs will be presented, followed by a discussion, along with both contemporary and classical theories that address pressing questions such as: what is the ethical limit to open-mindedness?; is OM a state or a trait?; and is OM always good or virtuous?
