Man there sure is a lot of talk about me without me being there 11. It does feel a bit strange to have a podcast with two of the biggest content creators to talk about smaller content creators. the biggest channels are the biggest because they make the best content. T90 is an amazing caster that can bring the more casual people into AoE2, TheViper and Hera are succesful pro players that are very entertaining and even Dave gets decent viewership due to his amazing personality. Other content creators can for sure benefit from hosts of the big streamers but only if they have something to offer. Its hard work to get to the top in a 20 + years old RTS and just cast some random games here and there or playing 5-6 ladder games on stream wont help u if u fail to have a unique personality people get invested in
@OytheGreat
Ай бұрын
My POV about certain casters who are struggling to make it full-time is harsh, but I just think they're not good enough as content creators. T90 isn't always my cup of tea (sometimes too energetic or a bit childish), but he's the best content creator AoE has ever had. Original, very interactive and in tune with his audience and extremely dedicated and hard-working. I watch other casters who would love to also do it full-time and see way less originality, interaction with their chat and all of that. It's a harsh reality, but in a fringe business like this, only the best can really make it. And most people aren't born entertainers, even though they would like to be.

I dislike this take. I agree that T90 is great entertainer but I wouldnt account his succes only to "quality" - T90 succeeded because he started at the right time, worked hard and most importantly he's the most likable, friendly and the easiest to listen to..his personality, way of commentary and speech pattern just appeals to the general public. Memb has his own thing, he's funny uses many inside jokes and is very high energy..its quality commentary yet he doesn't appeal to that many people because of his strong accent and hes not that easy to listen to. Ornlu or TWest have their own thing, very technical approach, insightful opinions, a lot of matchup knowledge - its quality content...but it is nieche and not high energy. They dont appeal to that many people. In a community of this size not all quality content makes it. It needs quality but also needs to appeal to the most people possible. This means talking in a way and talking about things that instantly grabs peoples attention, being high energy and friendly, even having a soothing voice and trying to interact with the chat in a way people can relate which often means not going to depth on any specific topic. This very much describes T90... His content is quality but so is many other peoples content. The difference isn't quality but the size of target audience..

T90s comment about streaming in the timeslots that don't have other streamers is a pretty overlooked detail IMO. One example is Survivalist in aoe2, he streams late night for Americans (9 PM and later NYC time) and that's a great time to stream, because the lucrative (and large) American audience is likely looking for some late night content before hitting the bed, but none of the large streamers are online. Survivalist's channel has grown considerably ever since he started streaming late at night (which works out to be morning - afternoon in Japan, where he lives now).
@jacobwood3326

Sorry Nelson, I gotta disagree here. Ornlu was brought in a couple of examples in the segment about struggling content creators. I have been subbed in and out ornlu channel since 2017 or smt like that. Lets be honest, he has been hosted by large content creators hundreds of times probably. He has hosted his own tournaments and casted thousands of games. Still he averages 200 viewers, so yeah if big expousure would help he would be a top content creator by now, but his style is kind of niche. So his marginal growth if he hosted a closed streaming tournament would not compare to the 30k invested. And If any streamer actually believes they can do it, they could probably ask a bank for a personal loan. Host their closed streming tournament and see if their investment paid off. Nobody will do it, its easy to play with someone elses money.

What I can share is that without SeanT (who was also the only sponsor of WDC in 2021), WDC 2 would probably not have happened, because WE prefers to contribute to events that have additional sponsors as well and SeanT's contribution is a very large share of the budget. And I agree that Nacho and Ornlu really deserved the funding. That and because they like TG and new creative maps, I asked them whether they want to host WDC 2 with me. I loved Masmorra's take on the open versus closed streams issue, trying to change things as they are and fighting for the smaller streamers. I think the issue of casting fees is challenging, but perhaps the organizing caster could establish an amount (in agreement with Microsoft, if they provide any support to the organizing caster), and the fee could be based on a percentage of viewers when the global peak is reached. If a big streamer gets 30% of the global viewers at the peak moment, their fee would be 30% of the established amount. No one below the organizing caster should have to pay, ensuring that smaller streamers aren't negatively impacted.

I think a terrible side effect would be community backlash. I think it might actually hurt their channel. In my opinion, having a closed tournament would decease their viewership because of a possible community boycott. I dont think it would be a positive to have your name attached to a tournament that divided an otherwise open community. I think the end result would be people leaving the channel because of the applied exclusivity. Its not something the community would support. Edit: I found AoE2 through Resonance22, ended watching Zero Empires, then Spirit of the Law, then T90, then Memb, then, Viper, then Heras, then Ornlu, etc etc... KZitem definitely supports trickle, cant say as much about streaming.

Yeah. Not to mention we already had some people trying closed streaming or caster fees in the past and it was NOT working well for them, as evident by them either dropping that approach or disappearing from the scene all together. I typically enjoy these kinds of conversations but this episode felt like a rehash of the same topics. GL dominance, opinions on team game vs 1v1 watchability, the plight of smaller streamers. All of those topics are interesting to me but they've already been discussed, been discussed by these guys and recently and not much was added here. I also have a lot of sympathy for smaller streamers (both players and casters) but I'm not sure engaging the two biggest content creators in a mental exercise that boils down to "lets think of ways to siphon views and dollars from you two and give them to other people who are struggling" is the best way to do that. I would absolutely listen to a long form discussion about how to create space and support up and coming players and casters in a community that is probably unlikely to see a lot of growth. I just don't think that discussion needs to be with these three and that's nothing against any of them, I consider myself a fan but they've already made their opinions on all of this known.

The closed streaming argument no one made is, yes, it would be good for that particular streamer but it would be bad for the community in general. Bad for the game. The tournament would be less successful. People want to watch their favorite streamers. If you want to break through you need to get there through other means, improve, make better content, be creative with timeslots, etc. Also, not everyone is going to be big. The community is small, it has no space for more than 4 or 5 big streamers. That's just the reality.

Lots of good discussion in the video and in comments about open vs closed streaming. I think T90 is on point if any caster wants to make money from a tournament by negotiating with Microsoft (similar to finders fee). Tournaments help bring more people to the channel, but keeping them engaged and grow the community is different. IMO, each streamer came up with creative ideas to engage the community and create content, T90s community Friday, low elo legends, Nili’s GerMonday, Memb’s rage forest.

Great podcast, in regards to streaming: Viper is being realistic and is still correct though. There is a limited number of audience, and while I think there's still newcomers to the game, it's a small amount each week, the existing audience already has such great talent and entertainment with the main casters, so few move on to try newer streamers. so it's very hard for new upcoming streamer to make a dent. It's no ones fault, it's not microsoft, it's not the game, it's not Viper or T90's fault. It's just the way it is when something is already very established. That being said, I believe we're in the golden age of AOE2, and hopefully more and more new people join, hopefully AOE2 grows in popularity and has a huge spike somehow, I think AOE2 is still increasing in size playerwise? (hopefully) That is the only thing that can help new streamers, is new growth of players/audience members into the whole community, so it can spread to other newcomers.

I watched a bunch of them over months learnt Viper was the greatest, Daut used to be the greatest and they all seemed like good guys. One of the games they are actually talking about at 1:11:24 was amazing. Then, eventually decided to go and watch T90's stream. From there you get exposed to others. The guys at the top are at the top because they are the best at what they do. Then, as viper said, you find other people through them with their own style. Personally, I now watch Daut the most because I like his humour, game play, general mentality, and Twitch chat. Different approaches can be made regarding streaming, but closed streaming is definitely not the way to go! Not just saying that as a viewer with wishful thinking, I can't imagine that to be a longterm good route for any streamer. The only situation it may be a viable thing, if someone is very very dominant he could use it as a tool to completely shut down any other remotely potential contender and that would be certainly no way to advocate for and still bear the risk of backlash. Instead collaboration and a appealing personality is key. I love Ornlu for his Campaign covers and I think no content creator can reach him there, not even Viper. He could probably win over some Viper campaign viewers, but should already be well established.

I think the only way to make it as a streamer is to be creative and produce unique content. Doing the same as everyone else and walling others out is not going to work well in the long term. All big streamers have unique content (and/or a unique personality) that people enjoy, which makes them watch their channel. And thinking of smaller streamers, I can see Daniela growing quite a bit in the near future because we haven't seen a caster/streamer being part of an e-sports team and I'm sure they're going to cook up some good ideas. Also, I've enjoyed her casts of RF 5 because she had special overlays, brought on RF players to co-cast and I haven't seen that anywhere else either.

Everytime I fall asleep watching KZitem I wake up to that 2v2 cup. I am at least 1k views on that or 100,000 percent audience retention however KZitem figures that.

If you describe a trickle as someone who used to watch T90 only but now only watch Viper only that is not a trickle. That is a transfer. That is T90 losing a viewer because he introduced them to Viper's stream.

@@AndrewTheFrank The idea is that some of the viewers T90 and Viper attract by being big on twitch or whatever end up also watching smaller creators like cast of empires, Daniela, Ornlu etc. I agree going from t90 viper isn't really a trickle

I think that the Xolotl warrior should get affected by the eagle's UT (+4 attack with aztecs, +1/+1 armor with incas, +40 hp with mayans). Also mesocivs shouldn't need to research redemption to convert stables. Those civs are fun to play so why not buffing them 11

RE; Not always watching big 3: on the rare chance I catch a stream live, I go to OrnlU because I like the witty banter and occasional political history MAtthew drops. But, due having a kid, a full time job, and an odd lifestyle - I go to the big 3 just because it's usually late at night and there's no banter on a vod, it's just entertainment.

This whole closed/open streaming comes down to the corona hype stage, when many people thought they could live from streaming/playing aoe2. The harsh truth is that the community is way to small for this.

closed stream makes not much sense; people want a content creator because of their personality, their voice and unique take. it doesn't make sense to have an event streamed only by Ornlu, he might be a great guy but i DON'T enjoy listening to him, his personality humor etc.... furthermore, can you imagine T90 and MEMB non being able to cast any other tournaments than their own? that's plain STUPID. i liked the T90 take regarding having 1 or 2 days of closed streaming on the early games of the tourney. i really hope that this closed streaming thing will NOT go on.

Viper is being realistic and is still correct though. There is a limited number of audience, and there's little newcomers to the game, the audience already has such great talent and entertainment with the main casters, so few move on to try newer streamers. so it's very hard for new upcoming streamer to make a dent. It's no ones fault, it's not microsoft, it's not the game, it's not Viper or T90's fault. It's just the way it is when something is already very established. That being said, i believe we're in the golden age of AOE2, and hopefully more and more new people join, I think AOE2 is still increasing in size playerwise? (hopefully) That is the only thing that can help new streamers, is new players/audience members into the whole community.

I wonder if the moment MS stops sponsoring bigger names finally comes, will it be better or worse for casters like Ornlu. On one hand, they know how to survive without money; on the other, if T90 asks viewers to sponsor the prizepool, there may be even less money for everyone else.

@@paweborkowski6959 if it comes to that, what would hurt more, T90 not being able to stream the Ornlu event, or Ornlu not being able to stream the T90 event? I think it would just make breaking in and getting a footing even harder honestly.

Open Streaming favours the viewers massively. I get to watch my preferred caster. Same problem in every industry. Why would I consume your ugly third would cola, when I can have coca cola? Now you can just ban coca cola and you would sell a little bit more of your bad product. But a lot of customers would just move on and consume energy drinks instead.

Viper's take is probably the most 'boring' but is just so accurate imo - there is a huge amount of luck that goes alongside the hard work that so many people are putting in. A lot of what people like and dont like is just random - there's no rhyme or reason to most of it. Look at the music industry - you just like what you like, it's not something you can explain a lot of the time. Look at Gangnam Style, could anybody have predicted that would blow up worldwide like it did? And as Viper said, with such a niche side industry like professional AOE2, there just isnt a lot to go around so it is extremely tough to 'make it'.

Let me first say: TheViper and T90 are my two favorite content creators in the AoE2-scene. That being said, I agree with Masmorra. Of course, there should be a broadcasting fee. It's actually absurd that there isn't. How is that fair? Organizing an event is the same amount of work whether you are a small or a big streamer. However, a big streamer will have a larger audience watching the event, thus breaking even much faster (if the small streamer ever breaks even at all). If I invest tens and hundreds of hours into organizing a tournament from which other (much bigger) streamers reap rewards, I should at least receive a small fraction of their reward. Maybe a small fee per average viewer count or something. Else these other streamers would just be freeloading of my work. Now you could argue: Then organize a smaller event! But how thus that help? My (time, money) investment will be lower, but also my rewards. And still bigger streamers will profit more from my work than I do myself. The gap remains. That's just an absurd system. There should be a (small) broadcasting fee. Of course, the fee should be low enough so that streamers still benefit from broadcasting the event. Also: This is not just about what is fair. If broadcasting fees were a thing in AoE2, there would be more tournaments and the scene would feel more active and healthy, and maybe even grow. There might be more for everyone. P.S.: To illustrate my point, I'll take it to the extreme: What if someone was an incredible event organizer/architect, but not a content creator at all? They would have zero incentive to organize an event. The AoE2 community would lose out on a great event.
@nemonym2466

Just to be clear: This is just about fair compensation for event organizers. Not about helping small creators reach larger audiences. Because here I disagree with Masmorra. I believe that most small creators in the AoE2-scene will remain small no matter the exposition they get, because often they just have more niche personalities; not the wide appeal required for reaching larger audiences.

Tournaments are funded in some way, mostly through the community or sponsorships - the funding should include compensation for the work of organizing the whole thing. I could see maybe a broadcast fee if you're footing the entire bill and plan to get it back mostly from casting - although maybe just, you know, don't do that -, but if you have a company funding a tournament, they should be paying for the organization. Specially if the money comes from Microsoft, the single entity with the most interested in keeping the game alive. I think in general the idea of broadcast fees would be way more trouble than they're worth and actually hinder growth outside of the largest casters, who don't need it anyway to guarantee their viewership.

WeSports is probably equal to GL imo. Liereyy best flank in game, Heartt is probably top 5 pocket boomer, and MBL is very good in team games, he lames and causes chaos. With Hera as better pocket than flank, Viper probably besy pocket, and Tatoh has fallen a bit. My moneys on WE. Liereyy has looked in top 2 1v1 shape as well and is favorite to take RBW.
