Hey! I have a question but I'm not sure you would see this since this video is a year old, but I'm curious: is it okay to replace the preservative solution on these preserved specimens when the water turns murky? I'm a 3rd year biology student and we will also be preserving animal specimens for our incoming internship program so I'm genuinely intrigued by the impeccable preservation of your collection!
@childofcascadia
Жыл бұрын
Yes. For wet specimens you should change out preservative solution every so often to prevent evaporation and bacterial contamination of the specimen. Some solutions last longer than others, but they should be changed if they get cloudy or develop an odor.
@kaithdvd
Жыл бұрын
@@childofcascadia Thank you! Our department has some interesting specimens but they're obscured by the discolored solution, and our faculty doesn't suggest replacing the solution even though we display them during events, so I got curious

Are those notes on special paper and/or ink? How do those stay so solid? And on your workplace, it looks like you're filling out your own records card-- in a very wet environment. How do you keep recording documents clean/dry during this process? The specimens themselves are really neat, but can you do a video on record and documentation for us ultra-nerds? 😀

I believe it's pronounced BIM-in-ee. It's in the Bahamas (as the tag says) off the Eastern coast of Florida. There was a famous shark lab located there ... just Google it. I really like your videos, and I just subscribed to your channel. The snail was great ! I would just suggest you look up the pronunciation and information for the words you're not familiar with, so that you can educate your viewers on those as well. Great video ! Thank you!

I kind of feel bad they were unable to be born. So many females that could have gone on to produce so many offspring for the good of the species. I would be surprised if they even knew the momma shark was pregnant when they caught her, if she was even alive.
@TheDarkFable
Жыл бұрын
Hmm well if they were collected today you'd have a point as the species is endangered, but when these samples were taken the species was far more abundant and considered least concern. I don't think a single litter from the 1950's would've done much for the population now.
@paranoiarpincess

Why do museums always preserve a ton of things in one jumbled up jar, and a shitty jar at that. Why not put them in a differently shaped container so they don't get preserved in wonky shapes and crushed or damaged in storage??????
