Lately, I have been talking a lot about only asking your horse "yes" questions, which means only asking them to do something that they can do. the more times you ask a horse to do something that's either impossible for them to do or something that bothers them and you have to get quite firm on them to get them to do it, the more they lose a bit of trust in you and your judgment. That's not usually evident at the time but comes back to haunt you in places where you really need them to trust you.
In this video, I talk about the things I need a horse to be able to do before I ask them to open a gate. I know some people use the opening of a gate to move laterally, but I like to teach all the movements first, then work on the gate, and the biggest reason for that being the first thing I mention in the video.
