The Holy Door of the Vatican was extraordinarily opened on March 25, 1983 on the occasion of the Holy Year of Redemption.
Normally, the Holy Doors of the four Major Basilicas are opened every 25 years, when the jubilee commemorating the birth of Jesus takes place. That jubilee, however, celebrates the Passion of Christ, which is estimated to have occurred around the year 33. Thus, in 1933 there was the jubilee of the nine centuries of redemption; fifty years later, the Church decided to celebrate with a new jubilee.
Saint John Paul II determined its celebration between March 25, 1983 and April 22, 1984, Easter Sunday; that is: the jubilee would begin with the solemnity of the beginning of redemption and would conclude with the solemnity of the culmination of Christ's saving work.
Thus, on that Saturday, Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, the rite began with a long procession leaving the church of Saint Stephen of the Abyssinians. Arriving at the entrance to St. Peter's Basilica, the Pope opened the Holy Door.
It was a unique occasion to see the Pope using the papal ferula with three horizontal bars, known as the "hierophant", whose symbolism matches the papal tiara, a combination of 3 crowns, each with a meaning.
Then the Holy Door of each of the other three Major Basilicas was opened: Saint Paul Outside the Walls, Saint Mary Major and Saint John in the Lateran.
