Back in the day we called this "router on a stick" or a one-legged router. It's a cool idea in a pinch but all the packets have to traverse one interface so you are making a lot of trade offs.

Great video. But why do you setup VLAN 10 in your switch as tagged and not untagged? Also, since port 1 is not a member of VLAN 1, doesn't that mean that none of the devices in VLAN 1 can reach the internet?
@vladislavkaras491
Ай бұрын
Speaking about your last question about VLAN 1, the Raspberry Pi acts as a router (and dhcp server), thus everything connected to the switch, aka to VLAN 1, would traverse through Raspberry Pi/OpenWRT router, which will use VLAN 10 in order to send & receive packets from Internet. Why did the author put port 1 on tagged VLAN is also a good question that I wonder about. I can guess that his ISP router is also tagging packets or at least it can expect frames with VLAN tag 10.

Great video! Thanks for very clear and articulated explanation! Before I dive into it and try on my home network, one question: the modem/router from ISP on the beggining of the video - it's a common modem (in bridge mode) which gives IP address (DHCP) to your network? Is this the case? My network is similar, I use ISP modem as bride mode, and my router (RPI4) acts as a router (DHCP server for home network)...just to make clear...Thank you!

Very interesting video. Quick question: Would this setup limit your internet speeds to 500Mbps? I ask since you are using the same cable to connect LAN devices to router and router to modem (through VLANS). I seems as if the data would have to go both ways through port 2 (connected to router) splitting the bandwidth in half. Thanks for your help.
@VanTechCorner
2 жыл бұрын
Yes it is, the max WAN to LAN throughput will be limited to 500 Mbps since you are running WAN and LAN on 1 single network port. For LAN traffic, it is handled by the switch and there should be no impact on the throughput.

@@VanTechCorner This is not true. There are 8 wires in a cat-5e or cat-6 cable for separated send & receive channels. I’ve been running similar setup on my laptop with one NIC and vlan switch. I have gigabit fiber internet and my Speedtest is always more than 900mbps both ways, up and down. I run pfSense on the laptop and an old router, Netgear R7000, converted to vlan switch with FreshTomato firmware. It might be the problem with the Pi, definitely not because of the “one network port”.
@zacbre

@@tranghang9925 what you are describing is a half duplex scenario, where half the pairs are for transmitting and half are for receiving. This was done on 10/100, but gigabit is full duplex, using all 8 wires or 4 pairs for both transmitting and receiving data. So the speed would be limited to 500/500 in this case, 500mbps for TX and 500mbps for RX. Of course, in the real world, these speeds will probably be lower, somewhere in the low 400s or upper 300s.

If you have any problem with WAN connection, please try to change Port 1 (to the ISP router) on the switch from tagged to untagged.

You just need to unplug the power connector. After the OS is booted from the microSD card, it is running on RAM so there is no problem with the hot plug/unplug. That is why there is no such "shutdown" option on LuCI. This applied for OpenWRT devices whether it is an SBC or home router.

@@VanTechCorner but will I be able to get the full bandwidth from my ISP?
@jonilaw1923

I would try setup the RPi in this way: if the ONT's IP is 192.168.1.1, then set RPi's IP to 192.168.1.254 gateway set to 192.168.1.1, turn off DHCP on the ONT and activate the RPi's DHCP. RPi connected directly to ONT.

It depends on what is the protocol used by the ISP and is it actually a ONT or ONT+Router. If it is a router, you can do like that. But it is only the ONT, you need to use either VLAN or 2nd ethernet port to setup your WAN interface. If you connect the RPI to ONT which is just the modem, what you can get is only the management page of the ONT, but no internet connection.

You need to contact your seller for this or try to use a USB to Gigabit Ethernet adapter. Here is the link to the tutorial kzitem.info/news/bejne/tamF1oNsiGapd3o

Then we will need a USB to Ethernet adapter to have a another interface for WAN. There is a video for this, you can check it out.

Why tag the wan port in the switch settings?

Hi, I don't understand your question. What is the network topology you want to setup when watching/searching for this video?
@keithpetrino

@@VanTechCorner I use this method as a basic NAT/PAT router for sharing an internet connection at home. I have it set up almost the same as you but with no tagging on the wan port. Only the trunk gets tagged with the wan vlan. Works perfectly. I wasn't sure why you tagged port 1.
@VanTechCorner

I got your point. It is due to the specific design/fault of the TL-SG108E. I have also said in the video description that it should be untagged with most of the switches, except for this (and perhaps other TP-Link switches with something wrong in the UI/Firmware).

Basically it should be the same with this, we just need change the VLAN configuration of the swtich according to your setup. Another thing is the port is gigabit, and it is only 1000 Mbps. If you really need load balancing I would suggest using 2 physical NIC for best performance. I will make a tutorials about this, but maybe in the future.

Hi, if you are working with VLANs, it is recommended to buy router with at least 2 network ports, this will make the configuration easier. I have made those Guest network videos (both LAN and WiFi), you can find it on the OpenWRT Tutorial playlist. Some videos are outdated, but you will find comments & feedback from others how to get it done. Due to the limited time, I don't provide one-to-one support. Any question should go to the OpenWrt forum or the FB group "Van Tech Corner & Friends" . Before posting the question, it is good to give it a try and share the problem you encountered.
