There is a little story to this, when Floor asked Henk to do this song on the show 'Beste Zangers' Henk said that he would if he could perform with Nightwish to which Floor said yes. Shortly after covid changed the world for a few years but the promish was kept. The audience did not know this was going to happen, it was kept silent until the moment that this song started and obviously to the delight of the crowd. Thanks for this reaction, Jess. :)

Henk made my mother smile from ear to ear. He came to have a beer after his solo show, grapped a stool for her, lifted her up and made her into a fangirl at 84! I was and still am grateful that he made her this happy after my sister passed on. When I thanked him he looked straight into my soul… he is a very special and beautiful human being. When Henk first performed this, it was entirely new in the Netherlands - he was Erik in the Dutch production of the show, and held the role throughout its run. He was reported to be Andrew Lloyd Webber's favourite Erik of all the various productions all over the world, and who am I to disagree - I don't and I heard the original in London on its opening season (yeah, I'm old). Floor saw and heard him in the role when she went to see the show as a teenager, and practically idolised him - when they were both in the same season of Beste Zangers, she went all fan-girly at just the thought of actually meeting him, never mind singing for him, having him sing specifically for her, and just possibly, singing with him in the duet finale - which of course happened. This performance was the payback, as he agreed to perform it with her on the show provided he be allowed to sing it with her live on stage with Nightwish on their next tour of the Netherlands. It was of course put back a couple of years by the pandemic, so this was the belated payoff on that promise (although he did give early instalments during Floor's crowdfunded solo series of concerts in the Netherlands). Although covered in their own arrangement by Nightwish until seventeen years ago, it had not been in their setlist since October 21st 2005 when Tarja was controversially fired by the band after the show. So this was a very special performance indeed. Without a powerful male lead, it is unlikely to be a regular feature of their performances going forward, either. Henk is probably the leading Operatic baritone/1st tenor in the Netherlands but also takes stage musical roles and is an actor as they provide a more regular income. He is also well known to the Dutch as Jean Valjean in Les Mis. He graduated from the same conservatory Tilburg as Floor, much later, received classical and operatic training at, a few selected short courses in her case, rather than the full-time course he followed. He graduated a year early because they decided he was teaching them more than he was learning from them. His previous occupation (insisted on by his father as careers in music have a high failure rate) was as a billiard table maker. That final note is a full 11s long, by the way, so not all that long for Floor - she has done up to 17 seconds in the past.

Always a good analysis Jesse. Floor drops that last note half a tone down to a D as I think she said something about the Beste Zangers performance where she could get a more dramatic sound with the D versus going for an Eb. She has reached an F during performances of other songs, so she has the range, but I think she is more confident in producing a more dramatic ending note one half step down. Floor always makes deliberate choices on how she is going to sing, including covers, and those choices may not align with how the song was originally performed. Something to keep in mind is that Floor portrays a more confident Christine Daaé. In the Beste Zangers version, she portrayed the role as being the equal of Erik, where we're left wondering as to who was actually trying to seduce who. Here she backs off that a little bit, but not all the way to the vulnerability of the original character. Jukka Koskinen is their new bassist and he has not sung in any of their performances to date. They're currently working on a new album, so that might change. While Troy has been doing an admirable job of increasing his vocal role and Floor has been taking over some of Marko's roles, we still need that grungy, gritty tone that Marko used to bring. Jukka has sung in Wintersun so we'll see if he gets the opportunity on the next album.
@ArumesYT
Жыл бұрын
She has the range *sometimes*. That's the problem, especially as she gets older. So yeah, in a way it's about confidence. I heard her miss that last note live on several occasions now. Also note how they mixed footage from both concerts in Amsterdam. JUST before she's supposed to hit that last note, they switch from day 2 to day 1. Makes you wonder....
@billattercliffe8655

@@ArumesYT I read somewhere (in an authoritative source that I can't remember) that pregnancy can lower a singer's voice. Age also plays a role. I've noticed that her comfort level with low notes has been increasing over the years. I doubt she'll give up easily, but she may have to avoid this song in the future. About the video mixing, they knew about that intent as Floor was advised to wear the same outfit for both nights. With that option available, it's no surprise that the editor would cherry pick the best clips. I produce videos that use anywhere from two to five cameras and I'll always pick the best angle available. I wouldn't read too much into that. Someone mentioned that Henk struggled with his timing on the first night, so having video from two nights is a real plus for the editor.

Great reaction! I always love the detail of your analysis. This arrangement is the original Nightwish arrangement that you reacted to 2 years ago with Tarja and Marko. It is different from the arrangement that Floor and Henk used in their Beste Zangers performance in 2019 or in Floor's solo concerts from before the pandemic or in September 2022 (video on her YT channel). The Marcel Fisser band started with the Nightwish arrangement but changed it to make it more contemporary and less metal. In that performance the beginning has a faster pace and Floor is using a more musical theater/contemporary voice. Here the pacing is slower and she is using a darker more operatic voice with more rounded vowels. This makes this version more dramatic in my opinion. Henk is a very famous Dutch musical theater performer. He was the Phantom for many years in the Dutch production of Phantom and also famous for his performance of Jean Valjean in Les MIserables. Floor saw him perform as the Phantom as a teenager and was a huge fan. When she heard he was going to be on Beste Zangers she agreed to do the show in order to meet and sing with her idol. He added the growl to his voice for Floor during the show. Earthlings has provided the backstory of how Nightwish had come to perform this song for the first time in 17 years. You should checkout the Best Zangers performance to see the differences. It is my favorite. Floor also sing Vilja Lied for Henk on the first show.

Hi Jess, a few things to say here. First, if Floor makes, or does not make, a pause obvious it is without question a deliberate choice, not just an accident. Second, Henke has played the Phantom for years, so not only will he gavevan original score with all the lyrics and dynamics marked, but I'm pretty sure he and Floor will have studied it together. As to vibrato, Floor has incredible vibrato control and can do whatever she likes - many times she will start a note with no vibrato then introduce it half way through the note, increasing it slightly through to the end. Here's vibrato is to wide and slow for my personal taste, but how could I complain at his tone? Phenomenal. (He learned distortion specifically to sing this with Floor in the Beste Zangers show.) Incidentally it is the same criticism I would make of Tarja - her vibrato is too wide for my taste. When it comes to the final note, 12 seconds IIRC, there is another piece you should here Floor singing, which is Ad Astra used as an outdoor in the current tour. Controversially some may say, I recommend you watch the Hellfest version. Some say the sound isn't the best and it does have a full minute of blacked out video in the middle. But that is during the bows and video is back by the time Floor steps forward. In this particular performance, the first time I watched it I literally had to hold on to my chair. You'll find the final note is considerably longer than this too, but it's those first couple of notes that always give me a shiver down the spine. The effect is not so pronounced in other performances (for me). Even when I saw it live in person at Wembley. Listen also to the commentary in the beginning of that song before Floir sings. It's a remarkable experience. Edit: oh, I forgot, great analysis. Love the detail you go into.

Hopefully someone here has linked the performance from the 90s of Poort performing this in Dutch. I'd only heard him on Beste Zangers and could tell his was the voice of an aging singer, and I believe he's semi-retired at this point, so likely isn't wanting to put the work in to maintain the more youthful sound. That said, when he was younger - holy hell. I was VERY impressed with his voice in that 90s clip. I can see why he was so popular. I love that he's just having fun with it now, throwing the devil horns and trying the vocal fry he'd only learned in recent years. So much fun to watch.

For vocals, Troy and Floor split Marko's vocals depending on the song. It works where Marko was doing backup vocals, but he's extremely hard to replace when it's a proper duet. Troy is a good Vocalist, but not Marko's equal, particularly in stage presence. As far as I'm aware, Nightwish has dropped the songs Marko sang lead on from the set list. As an aside, I'd love to see Henk sing The Islander or High Hopes. He's got the stage presence and voice to actually replace Marko if he felt like doing something different for a few years.

Considering that usually not everything of the instrumentation comes from the artists but they also often have a backing track from the orchestra, it would cause total mayhem for the timing of the backing track if she would just onset whenever she pleases.

Andrew Lloyd Webber has said that Henk Poort was the best Phantom of them all!

The musical's composer is of course Andrew Lloyd Webber. But I believe this particular arrangement is Tuomas'. You only hear it being performed by Nightwish around Tarja's time. Which of course can be seen on the End of an Era DVD (kzitem.info/news/bejne/1YJom6aYp6h-Z6Q). Both several other artists, as in the TV show Beste Zangers , as in Floor and Henk's own solo shows they sing another arrangement, more similar to the original. Except Tarja, on her DVD Act 1 she sings this arrangement, but with another intro and of course, another Erik. (kzitem.info/news/bejne/s4-w03WHhqWDZZg)

I've never heard of this band. But I truly like this cover. The Phantom of the Opera has been one of my favorite musicals for decades. By the way, I literally found your channel tonight. This is the second reaction I've watched so far. I'm loving the way you do it. If you want something else by Andrew Lloyd Weber to react to, you should check out Dan Vasc. Truly, any of his covers are wonderful, but here is a link to him covering "Music of the Night." kzitem.info/news/bejne/kqKDt5NprYlijH4

I would love to see your analysis of the same Nightwish song performed by both Tarja and Floor. They are both amazing - but they are different. I think you could explain those differences in a cognitive way. Complicating this analysis would be how the band has had to adapt it's songs, having been formed around the legendary Tarja, making the radical shift to perform with Anette Olzon, then to Floor who has the mind blowing talent to fill both of their shoes. The band itself has progressed as musicians and adapted their performances to match their vocalists.

Another great performance. But I still don't like the fact that they always switch the same lines. In every performance Henk sings "I am the mask you wear," and then Floor sings "it's me they hear." It just doesn't make sense.

Technically, nobody replaced Marco vocally. Troy has been with the band all along, and he has been singing. Troy is a little more brought to the front.

Maybe you could check out the "All I Ask of You" metal cover by Adrienne Cowan! It's similar to Nightwish's "Phantom of the Opera" cover in that it is a metal re-imagining of the classic, except it's just one woman singing the roles of all 3 characters, set to a melodic metal arrangement she made herself.
