This experiment was codenamed Operation Snowball and remained under the curtain of secrecy until the late 1980s, when the press of the perestroika era seized on the events at the Totsk test site. The general message of the publications at the time was accusatory, because tens of thousands of young soldiers were exposed to radiation. They were forbidden to disclose their participation in a nuclear test, and therefore the causes of their further illnesses could not be established.
