On a warm Friday morning in Mid-Missouri at the COLT Transload, the Columbia Terminal Railroad locomotive 2001 emerges from the transload facility shed to make a run after a week of rest. There are multiple cars to be switched around the industries before heading down the line for the day. The Columbia Terminal Railroad is a local short-line operation owned by the city of Columbia, Missouri, serving various industries linked by rail in town. The Columbia Terminal Railroad currently has two locomotives on their roster, COLT 1, which is a SW1200 that was built in 1954 by the Bauxite & Northern railroad. And COLT 2001, seen in this video, and is a GP7U built by the ATSF railway in 1952. The Columbia Terminal Railroad starts off their mini journey at their transload facility on Brown Station Rd in Northern Columbia, Missouri. The railroad runs from Columbia to Centralia, Missouri using a former Wabash branch-line where they interchange with Norfolk Southern’s St. Louis District there.
The original line was built by the Boone County and Jefferson City Railroad Company and construction of the line ensued shortly after the Civil War in 1867. The Wabash Railroad took complete control over the line in 1902 after multiple mergers and agreements. Fast-forward many years later when Norfolk Southern took over the Wabash, NS set out to abandon the 21 mile Branch-Line in the year 1987 due to slow business. The city of Columbia then had a vision and bought out the railroad for a whopping 325,000 dollars forming the COLT we know today, still thriving and serving the rail industry. As of recently, the COLT is not running past the US 63 highway bridge into COMO and the line after the Brown Station Rd crossing is OOS.
In this video, we will chase the COLT 2001 from the Transload in Columbia, to the Wye in Centralia where they will drop off a chunk of railcars for NS and then tie up on the left leg of the spur. This video will feature recordings at a few crossings along the way. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy this mini-movie production, documenting the COLT operations while they are still around and doing business.
