This video shot with 2 different drones on different days in July, August and September.
Opgrimbie (Limburg: Grömme and Grimmie) is a Maasland church village, was an independent municipality until 1971, now belonging to the municipality of Maasmechelen, in the Belgian province of Limburg.
The place name cannot be explained unambiguously. Op means: Higher up, grim could mean sand or gravel, and bie could mean abode.
During the 12th century the name for the two cores (Opgrimbie and Daalgrimbie) together was Grimbede. During the 14th and 15th centuries, various spellings were in circulation, in addition to Grimbede, people wrote Grimmij, Gimbij, Gremmij and Grembij.
Opgrimbie, together with Daalgrimbie, forms a street village along the former Roman highway from Tongeren to Nijmegen. Prehistoric and Roman finds indicate ancient habitation on this site. Later it was a Frankish allodium that was split in the 9th or 10th century, with Daalgrimbie eventually coming to the empire of Mechelen-aan-de-Maas. In 1230, the Opgrimbie domain was donated to the Hocht Abbey. Thus Opgrimbie received ecclesiastical immunity, which led to conflicts with the Prince-Bishop of Liège. In 1651, however, the prince-bishop was recognized as a feudal lord, thus ending the conflicts. The patronage law and the tithing law were in the hands of the Abbey of Cornillon, later of the Abbey of Beaurepart. Opgrimbie is indicated on the Ferraris map as 'Gremi', a small enclave of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, between Mechelen, one of the Eleven Banks of Sint-Servaas in Maastricht and the county of Rekem.
Opgrimbie was repeatedly destroyed by troops, especially in 1490 and 1579.
In 1851 Daalgrimbie was rejoined to the then (very small) municipality of Opgrimbie. At that time, Daalgrimbie had 359 inhabitants while Opgrimbie had 96 inhabitants. It is striking that Grimbie, or the folk names Grimmie and Grömme, was not chosen, but that the name of the municipality was retained. The three names mentioned here for the two cores together are still used in popular speech. In 1971 Opgrimbie ceased to exist as an independent municipality and became a sub-municipality of the merged municipality of Maasmechelen.
Since then, the settlement has expanded further west from the village, to around the Oude Baan. A social housing estate annex allotment called Klein Spanje was created.
Opgrimbie is located in the Maas valley at a height of approximately 45 meters, measured via the Tweede Algemene Waterpassing. To the west the height rises via the steep ridge to the Kempens Plateau, where heights of more than 90 meters are reached. This is where the Royal Domain of Opgrimbie is located, an enclave in the Hoge Kempen National Park. The National Park includes the nature reserve De Vallei van de Kikbeek, which is located south of the A2 motorway. Silver sand was originally extracted in this area, after which the quarry and the watercourse were returned to nature.
Opgrimbie is home to the Duivelsbergcircuit, a rallycross circuit at the foot of the Duivelsberg.
