Ore was discovered in Ophir Canyon in 1863, and in 1864, the Murphy Mine was established. The following year a 20-stamp mill was installed at $200,000. Mining declined in 1869 but was reactivated during the 1880s.
Only lasting a decade, the town of Ophir was deserted, although the Murphy Mine still had some activity, producing over $3 million in gold and silver. Iron, copper and arsenic were also found.
Like any boomtown, Ophir had a school, a church, hotels and lodgings, saloons, and of course, nightly activity for the miners. Now, all that remains are the ruins of the mill and a few stone miners' cabins.
