The number 6 is a killer size for this knife. It’s a TINY bit small if you’re looking for ergonomic perfection but its pocket feel makes up for it. It’s a completely usable, sharp knife that disappears in your front pocket for under $20. BAM

The Opinel is legal for pocket carry (some size restrictions) in most European Countries. Most countries there don't allow knives which automatically lock open. Since the Opinel has to be manually locked open, it's a great pocket knife if you are going to visit Europe.

The no. 8 inox is my favorite travel knife. I'm frankly baffled as to why so many Opinel fans still favor the Carbone model, but to each his own. My travel knife is mainly used for fruit, and Inox doesn't leave every tasting like metal. When on the road, one doesn't always have access to a place to clean the knife, so Inox fares better. I prefer drop point, and it was easy enough to grind down the blade. One heck of a knife!

I often find myself in a complicated situation. I have to prepare food in a place where sharp knives cannot be left in drawers of just lying around, so I need to bring my own knife, which I have to then carry on my person at all times, and which I have to take back and forth with me on a daily basis. But this is also in a locality which makes it illegal to carry most usable locking blade knives. My answer, of course, is the Opinel. I carry a #9 stainless. No one freaks out when I take it out to use it public places. Even police and security officers see it as inoffensive and innocuous. But in using it, I have found that it is a great food prep knife, far better than any of my other folders, I have come to appreciate it’s light weight and its ability to lock in the closed position, as I have had other folders open up in my pocket. So now it’s a part of my daily carry trifecta: my Swiss Army Camper (I need the saw blade and can opener on a regular basis), my Swiss Army Midnight Manager (flashlight and pen), and the Opinel. All three serve me well!

Opinels, they are great lightweight slicers. A number 8 stainless makes an ideal backpacking food prep knife. Gave my mom a stainless walnut handled number 6 with a leather sheath to keep in her purse because a normal folder would gather too much debris and detritus riding in there. The Carbone's like you have there will holding a shaving edge for quite a while on a strop with compound. Easiest knife to keep scary sharp.

Thanks for the review a lot of interesting stuff. I just bought the #8 and so far love it. It is very, very sharp. And ya these go way back. I remember my step grand-dad had one and I'm 61. So I plan on getting some more for different things like you said, the kitchen. May I say again, this knife is very sharp. Also it has a very sharp spine and strikes a ferro rod like no other. In fact be careful as I slightly cut my skin on the spine and I'm sure would have been worse with more pressure. Anyway, great review!

I've just recently started buying Opinel knives and I love em'. I can get the No. 08 at work(Cabela's) for $9 bucks with my current discount. I do like the No. 09 size and blade length though and I'll probably pick one more up and blue the blade and use it for my EDC Food/general use knife instead of my current No. 08. Anyway, thanks for the vid. Talk to ya' later.

I picked up a #7 in stainless last year just because I was seeing so many people talking about them online. It's a neat knife because of the simplicity and ingenuity of the design, but it's tough to justify carrying it with so many "better" options. 👍👍

I was at a store in Japan a week ago and wanted to get a knife for the trip - basically to cut fruit and such. The stores only had tiny Victorinox (too small for my hands) and Opinel No. 06, No. 08, and No. 09. Even when locked, the two larger ones had some serious blade wobble - both laterally and longitudinally. I picked the No. 06 due to the blade not being loose when in the locked position. Most of my knives go through some pretty hard work that I would not put the Opinel through as tang that is attached to the handle is very short, even on the larger ones the stores had.

Glad to see a serious Opinel review as opposed to the tactical review... The Opinel no 6 is the poor man's CRK Mnandi, especially with bubinga wood and mirror finish blade. Screw a screw eye into the back of the handle and use a P7 suspension clip for pocket carry

Hello Zel, I love this knife, I have a few and in Christmas 2015 everybody got an Opinel... eheh. Unfortunately I have one that has a very stiff opening and closing, sometimes it's very difficult to use the nail groove. Do you know any way to fix this problem? Thanks, regards.
@Zelrick42
7 жыл бұрын
Opinels for everyone! For the problem there are several ways to fix it, easiest way is to just wear it in by opening and closing it a few million times or so. You could also use a needle file/sand paper in the areas that you can get to around the pivot, but be careful and go really, really slow. The one I'd probably try is the pry the metal ring slightly looser by using an appropriately sized flat blade screw driver. If you google it I bet you find a dozen more ways. Thanks for watching and hope you get that Opinel figured out.

One time I used a Harbor Freight reciprocating that vibrated itself to death. The guy working with me had another one and it did the same. I've had their 4.5in angle angle grinders burn themselves out. Their saw blades and drill bits go dull instantly. That's just been my personal experience with them. Harbor Freight Chinese sourced tools use scrap yard alloys that have the characteristics of Play Do. They don't sell tools, they sell tool-shaped objects, hence the smart-assed remark. I enjoy your perspective on blades and the blade industry. No real insult intended.

I had to jab a little back, still curious what you did to get exiled from Texas, I'm a foreigner as far as they are concerned but they welcome me with open arms every time I visit. Most even try to talk me into moving down there. Harbor freight is just about what you said, I do use some of their stuff when I know that the tool is probably going to be one time use. For $10 the 4.5 inch angle grinder I used for mastic removal did it job, then we had a burial, in file 13 and my good grinders didn't have to eat that nasty dust.
