Why can’t the system allow for re-teching your character? If you find that your character isn’t shaping out the way you want then have a way to pivot into something else?

Something I see more and more with level based systems is people who come up with a superstrong character build, and they work towards it with no character development input. And then by lvl 10 they realise that the character they WANT to play isnt viable anymore for the campaign they are in because the choices they made doesnt mesh with the rest of the players :P Which is why I have more or less switched over to skillbased systems.

A twist: I disagree! My least favorite thing in D&D4 by far is picking feats and it’s because they are so small. It is very rare that a feat will help me develop my character concept, they mostly establish my build in combat in particular. Worse, my favorite feats that do influence character concept (fighting styles, divine domains, multiclass, ritual casting, martial practicies) frankly would benefit from being bigger! I think one of the strengths of D&D5’s character creation is how resonant the character options are. It leans into the strengths of a class based game, that the archetypes and choices are clear and bold and make you want to play them. The problem is the no choices and fake choices at every level past 3.

I think powers in 4e are in the Goldilocks zone for granularity of player choices. They're pretty small and modular, but they have a substantial effect on how the character plays. 4e feats are too granular, but more importantly, they don't change the gameplay, only the effectiveness. They might as well be prescribed.

@@matthewparker9276 This is exactly how I feel about powers in 4e. I wish that feats worked more like the powers, mostly class based, flashy, and defining.
