As cold as it is, I was more or less on board with Jake’s decision to terminate all those Yeerks. It was war and they were enemy combatants. If their plan to take over the ship did not succeed, then those Yeerks could have vastly outnumbered them if they even had enough hosts for a fraction of them. If the war had not been won, those Yeerks would have further contributed to their Empire’s war machine, so even though killing them did not directly help their mission (aside from maybe demoralizing the enemy), I think it was a practical decision to make while they were in combat.

Yeah Visser Three/One's attorney really dropped the ball. If she really wanted to put up a good defense, instead of just immediately objecting to Jake testifying and calling him a war criminal, she should have waited till cross examination. Wait till Jake is telling about some massacre Visser 3 did, then bring up that Jake has done similar things. Maybe even ask him if in the same situation he'd do the same thing Visser 3 did. His stunned silence might score her some points. If you want to make the judge/jury question the character of the witness, bring up some skeletons in their closet, wait till cross examination. If you knew a witness to a trial was a former criminal, don't just yell out "He's a criminal, kick him out!" Cross examine him and have HIM admit to his past actions.

There are too many problems with the Visser One Tribunal to name and it comes down to the fact that the way an actual trial would be conducted would be way too boring for a book (and/or way too repretitve as it would continually go over all of the events in the Animorph/Yeerk history). You are correct that the proper way to impugn Jake would be in cross-examination.

23:17 Yes, I seriously consider Loren's inexplicable absence to be one of the single worst problems with this book, right up there with all of the stuff that is suddenly introduced for no reason at all in the last third of the last book of the entire series. It's not even Tobias's behavior that bothers me so much as the fact that *no one ever mentions Loren at all.* You could argue over whether or not Tobias abandoning Loren is plausible (I would vote for implausible, personally), but there is no possible justification for the other characters not commenting on this. There's even a line early on in the book where Marco narrates that Rachel was Tobias's only link to humanity. You would expect Marco of all people to appreciate the value of a long lost mother! It seems very likely to me that Applegrant simply forgot about Loren. I understand that they were under a lot of pressure due to the monthly release schedule, but seriously: devoting half of Tobias's final book (yes book 49 was ghostwritten, but Applegrant must have at the very least approved the story outline) to reuniting him with Loren and then completely forgetting about her during the finale 5 books later is really, really sloppy and just plain bad writing.
@DianaGohan
Жыл бұрын
I have the feeling that Applegate and Grant weren't really a fan of Loren becoming a full character and Tobias's mood change. You can tell even in 53 that Tobias is different then he was between 49-52 and it's clear if it were up to the ghost writers more they wouldn't of had him go fully depressed "reclusive himself on a meadow and just be a full on red tailed hawk" especially since after the war was over there was no need for that. I mean if Marco and Jake and Cassie were gigantic celeberties and multi millionares who could of had anything given to them, Tobias could have to. He could have just went back to being human with his mom and even tried living a more normal life but yeah pretty clear that Applegate and Grant wanted him to be a hawk. That was the image and character they had for him and that's what they wanted him to be so they just hammered in "oh no the only thing keeping Tobias sanity and deserve for a normal life was Rachel and with her dead he had none of that" and thus keeping him as a nothlit red tailed hawk even if he's still ultimately miserable like that. And didn't have to be but again it's clear that's the direction they were were going down and yeah that was a bad call. I mean granted being away from the series years after the fact and knowing the full scope more and not to mention not having the pressure of having to work for specific editors and dead lines there probably is always a line of detatchment from any critic to a source claiming they could do a better job but that doesn't mean that point is totally invalid. Sometimes a creator can make bad calls on these books in just forgetting or not addressing certain things due to wanting a specific vision in their head and that's certainly the case here.

@@SanvelloSerapiega I always saw the Pool Ship as a transport ship, not a base. The Pool Ship was not the Yeerk homeworld. Civilians may live on base if they’re married to servicemembers, but civilians don’t go on transports. The Pool Ship was a military target. Everyone on board would’ve been a military combatant. @SanvelloSerapiega

@@sebastianshades4 the issue with your transport and base description (see it is the mother ship meaning it would likely be the big mobile base for earth) is that I assume is a mobile base and the military and civilian distinction would be messed up both by Yeerk policy (see the Yeerks have a militant society) and by Andalite policy. From a Yeerk civilians perspective the Andalites are war criminals that are fully willing to attack civilians even for an indirect military edge. From their perspective unlike a civilian living in an america town their civilian locations need to be militarily defensible and the ability to be hidden away from Andalite forces. Which is what they believed they were fighting throughout most of the story based off the assumption the Andalites were following their own military doctorine. Also the base functions more like a carrier than a Helicopter. Helicopters for instance don't carry the emergency reserves for food supplies. It is constantly shown to have supplies both for increasing the war effort and the backup supplies for just staying alive for all Yeerks.

I feel like too much of your negative opinions of cassie made it into your character review of her. While she was never my favorite I always liked her as a character, filling the role of heart and morality that they needed to not lose themselves. Sometimes her points and decisions were off (and I'd credit this to the ghost writers not knowing how to write her) but even when those points can be justified in the war effort, stopping to ask them is important. She also found the most normal life afterwards and so her approach worked for her in the end.

However, the negative actions that Visser One/Three is implicated for would include: (1) taking of civilian hostages, (2) invasion of a sovereign nation without a declaration of war, (3) murder of human hosts, etc., many of which would be war-crimes. I have not actually red the book (since it is still not available in my country) but I imagine that Visser (can't call him one) was tried under crimes against humanity since Yeerks have not exactly signed Genava. Since the only crime other yeerks were not guilty of (and apparently there was no trials against them, but I have not red the book). I feel Visser was convicted of killing bunch of underlings's hosts which would be kind of funny and amusing callback to the trial in Visser where killing underlings was wrong but not a big deal. And laws are kind of flexible and trials arranged by victor countries partially so it is not like Jake would ever be convicted of anything anyway. But you should not base your morals on laws so it is good that he is considering these issues. I kind of feel he was guilty but I do not think just because you have committed serious crimes you are irredeemable or you can not understand. Yeah, the major issues regarding religion is really swept under the rug here. and this entire thing could have been a massive essay all on its own, given that christianity alone, would probably have dozens of different ways of handeling it. by the pope's own words, if a sentient alien asked him to baptized him, he would do it. would other christian branches do so? would protestants? orthodox? then you get into the real debate regarding beginning of sentient life in the universe. some christians believe that if we do discover other sentient species, they will be "unfallen", that is to say, they never ate the apple(or an equivelant) which granted awareness of sin. others believe othervise. also as you noted, if sentient aliens showed up, and declared their announcement in the name of the father, son and holy spirit and could prove that they(wheter they were fallen like the race of man, or unfallen) have worshipped the chrisitan god for thousands of years, itdd probably be the end of secularism. itdd mean HUGE upheaval in the religious structure of the world. christians would feel compel to convert all other people to their religion, sympaty for those that refused to convert would be minimal, other religions would probably be outlawed, etc. and thats just the best case scenario, in where the aliens completely follow one major religion of earth. in this case, a whole influx of species that follow no religions that earth could possibly identify with, and most seems to be atheists in general. this would probably be the worst case scenario, as a lot of religions would reject any offer of friendship towards them, and as they would have no other easy option of converting to a now proven faith, they would either have to reject these aliens in their faith, or incorporate it into their faith. could you imagine how IS or alqaida(or the animorphs world equivelant) would deal with aliens appearing? hints, itll be a lot of violence. that being said, im curious how this series would have ended if it had been written after nine eleven, applegate would probably have had a more serious view on religious extremeism, and been more aware how common it actually is. asfor the rest of what i dont like about the finale, outside of the ending itself(which ill cover under part 3), my biggest petpeeve is usuprisingly lauren. or rather the lack thereoff. while i agree that tobias abandoning his mother might be a realistic(if horribly cruel) thing to have happen, it certainly wasnt well written. at all. it doesnt feel like its written like the other endings, which generally seems like it has far better understanding of what makes these characters tick. and tobias doesnt even completely shut himself off from contact with others, as he still has a rather clear connection with the hork-bajir. what, he visits them regularly enough for some of them to know where he hangs out, but he cant make visits to his mom? that seems like a horrible set of priorities, and extremely out of character for tobias, for him to abandon the one great thing that he always wanted. a real family member. to be honest, if you look at it that way, it could be that it was written this way, specifficly to make tobias go on with jake's final mission. after all, personally, i think that the far more likely thing that would have happened after rachels death, would be 1. tobias COMPLETELY shuts himself off from the human world, and no one knows where the hell he is, or 2. a reversal of his choice to become a hawk happens. tobias, to cope with this immense pain, embraces the ONE thing he got out of the war, the ONE thing he still fully loves, and becomes a human notholit and live with his mom, essentially shutting himself off from the animorphs completely. hell, he's the only one who would have an actual good shot at doing that and still be keeping himself out of the great spotlight the others found themselves in after the war. but both of these would probably mean, that he wouldnt go with jake. either because jake couldnt find him, or him refusing, even for AX's sake, to abandon the one good thing he still has in his life. in any case, the complete lack of lauren being mentioned, was arguably the worst misstep of the entire finale, maybe even more than the ending itself.

+biropgrules Imo the religions of this universe could just include aliens or be open to the possibility. I wold be fine with such a change or reality. I am a Christian and if I were to write a book about aliens I would just change the Bible as I change the reality since I would think that that is what God would have done. And I would change the other religions as for fairness. So there is no massive issues with dealing with religions, this is a book series for teens after all and with limited pages, or making religious people look like idiots. I think an additional chronicle book after this should have been from Lauren's pov to show how the characters and the world is reacting.

And I think their congregation would riot against their Pope being so casually trusting after a literal actual War--- they could be Angels, they could be Devils, but humans will have *questions* for the Andalites. lots of them. and that will result in lots of religious fracturing, suspicion, and tons of stuff.
