One best Mercury outboard How to Videos out there. Very deliberate showing every step. Not skipping steps like most How too's on KZitem. Great job ! 😊

Great video! I installed a new impeller on my Optimax and rotated the shaft to get the lower to fit correctly. When I ran my boat on the trailer to confirm it worked the prop wouldn't spin when I gave it throttle. I finished in the dark and assumed that if the shaft fit and the lower unit was flush I was good to go but will give it another go in a couple months. Any advice appreciated and keep up the awesome work!

You can feel the 3 selector positions on the lower by twisting the selector on the lower unit. Just twist it to the position the handle is in then put the lower one I prefer in forward gear

Is that miles per hour tube that’s hanging down coming out of the same hole is the shift shaft.? I noticed there was another little hole in the front of that in the upper casing. Do I run that hose through that or do I keep it around the shift shaft

The rear bolt, on my Optimax 150hp, that is accessable once you've removed the anode, doesn't have a washer. Is that correct?

I have the 175 PRO XS OPTIMAX DFI and I started this job but only have two nuts on the side, 1 in the front of the motor and then the anode bolts. I can't for some reason budge the lower unit off the motor. Not sure what I am missing.

Great video. , I am in the process right now to install a new impeller repair kit , I have my lower unit out and , but I haven’t reinstalled it into the power head yet. , I took my lower unit out in neutral, I hope I can just put it back like I took it out, without any issues.. any extra advice would be appreciated. Great video gave me some good ideas. Thank you.

Sure the shifter where it goes onto the lower unit you can turn that lever clockwise and counter clockwise a little that would be forward and reverse then just engage the handle in the boat to forward. If your lower unit is in neutral however if your drivesplines for the lower unit dont match up to the upper you cannot spin the prop to make them line up making it a little harder to reattach the lower to the powerhead. That's why either forward or reverse should be engaged and not changed during removal and reinstallation

Hey there is a hole or notch in the leading edge of the gear case of my OPTIMAX PRO-XS 150 just above the prop "bullet". I've never noticed it before and was concerned that it was damage. However on a mercury video there is a brief shot that indicates it is "as built" can you confirm? I thought I could make out the same notch/hole on your gear case in this video. Also, if it is normal, what function does it perform?

Before you started taking the lower gear apart, did you put your shifter in Forward or Neutral? Which would be easier?
@BSBASSIN
2 жыл бұрын
Forward is what most say but it's the same as if you throw it in reverse. If it's in nuetral and the shaft isn't lining up when you spin the prop the shaft won't spin so forward or reverse is better

One more question ? I put my lower unit back in since I took it out in neutral, I put it back in neutral, little harder then I thought, but I got it back in , I tried my shift lever handle put it in forward like you did in video, then back to neutral, then reverse, seems ok. I hope that was right??? If the splines on the shaft and shift lever was not lined up I would not be able to put the unit back together right , am I correct about that? Thank you

I left mine in neutral when disassembling any tips on getting it to line up?
@BSBASSIN
2 жыл бұрын
Manually spin the gear selector on the lower unit until you find the middle spot. Also spin the input shaft a little while raiding the lower unit. If you put the boat into forward amd the lower unit into forward when you spin the prop shaft the input shaft to the lower unit will spin also and that will help getting everything lined up

You can put some grease on the 5 bolts that hold the lower unit up to prevent corrosion, , but I do not due to taking it off every season for an impellar ur if I hit something
@jackmonigatti211

Jerry Owens I would recommend anti-seize because stainless bolts can and will bind to stainless nuts. Stainless bolts also corrode with aluminium. Both of which can cause seizing between threads, hence why anti-seize is so good. No-one likes tight bolts or worse, broken bolts.
