In cinema mode they are both brighter and slightly less accurate color wise. We just compared the Vivid and Reference in this video as there is a significant difference in brightness and color but in the cinema mode it is in between. It would be a good choice if you no not need the brightness of vivid but Reference just not quite bright enough for your application. It is always a trade of of color accuracy vs brightness and what you are willing to live with.

Thank you! I've really been torn between those two. I do game, but it's mainly for movies (80/20 movies/games). I'm going for eye candy this time. The best picture, the best colors, the best contrast. I have a room with very controlled light, so I think the decision is going to be an easy one - the UHD65.

first of all, great reviews. much appreciated! easy choice to me. some natural light, go with the 60, lookin for that dedicated cinema feel, UHD65. would really love to see epson 5040 go against the 65 as the 4040 does not have dynamic iris and 5040 has more lumens. My next projector will either be a 5040 or a UDH65. Thanks again. Love this channel.

I understand your excitement, that's why we did the Epson LS10500 comparison (we currently do not have the 5040) and even against this flagship Epson with almost perfect blacks this little guy held its own on most scenes, even the dark ones. The 5040 is better than the 4040 but it is not in the league of the LS10500. If we do get a 5040 (would be after CEDIA now) we certainly would do a test however, thanks for watching. We also just found out that one of the on-line projector labs just confirmed the UHD65 has better blacks and contrast than the $7,999 BenQ HT8050 and we totally understand, this UHD65 is clearly the best under $5K 4K UHD projector we have seen!

Correct, we found the exact same thing so we did the comparisons with the dynamic black off. Also, at least in reference mode, it disabled the lamp brightness setting so we went with it off.

I don't like either of these for gaming. The UHd 60 still has 50ms of lag (the 33ms advertised is supposedly a potential but measurements say otherwise) and, thanks to it's color wheel, rainbow artifacts are going to be much more noticeable.

what other 4k projectors are coming out under 3000 in the next year. I like the uhd65 but want a little better black levels or a lower price .
@tedbollinger3306
7 жыл бұрын
So Core Tronics, who is the parent company for Optoma will be manufacturing similar versions for other companies but they will not be any higher performance and in most cases will not have the full 3 year warranty that Optoma offers. Even though the UHD65 doe not have as good as black on a totally black image it does have a very comparable contrast and apparent blacks with projectors in the $8K range. Unless you are mainly watching mostly night scenes (and even some of those the Optoma will equal) I would still consider the Optoma unless you feel otherwise.

Hi great review. I currently use a 5030 epson but the itch to 4k has me looking. Do you find a colour brightness difference as large when using a cinema grey screen.
@tedbollinger3306
7 жыл бұрын
Not so much color brightness but overall brightness, A grey screen can improve black levels but depending on the size you may need to add brightness. As you add brightness you also raise the black levels so it is a tricky balance. We have found that it is possible to increase the overall brightness of the UHD65 without sacrificing too much of the color quality by going to the Vivid mode. In some cases that will allow a larger screen size, use of a darker screen material or better HDR. There are other adjustments but they are a little more involved and would require a certified calibrator to do it right but I would suggest trying the Vivid mode first.

Which one would be the best for a high ambient light room? i currently have a epson 3500 and would like a bit "brighter whites and deeper blacks" and less image wash during the day
@tedbollinger3306
5 жыл бұрын
If you are willing to give up some color accuracy and saturation the UHD60 would be slightly brighter. If you desire high quality color and put the UHD65 in Vivid and the UHD60 in Cinema they are amazingly very close in terms of brightness but the UHD65 will have the better color due to the RGBRGB color wheel with no "white" or clear section like the UHD60 has.

@@tedbollinger3306 i just saw the viewsonic px747-4k and px727-4k have you done or seen any comparisons vs the optomo or epsons? im really caught between which to get because i need brightness for the ambient light but dont really want to give up color and image quality to achieve it. im looking at blackout shades to minimize the ambient light. right now my epson 3500 gets "washed out" fairly easily by ambient light. and its 2500 lumens.

You may want to consider saving up for a while and getting the UHZ65 at 3,000 usable lumens. It is also laser which means in the long run say 3 to 5 years depending on use because there are no filters to replace or lamps to buy it may even be cheaper in the long run. Unfortunately the Epson's do not have the 4K detail and resolution of the Optomas.

I currently own the Uhd60. I like it but don't love it. I can still return it. Is the 65 worth the upgrade?
@tedbollinger3306
7 жыл бұрын
That would totally depend on your application and needs. If you do not need the lower latency of the 60 for gaming or the little bit of extra light output for a large screen (larger than 110") then yes, the UHD65 has better color, and much deeper blacks which makes the image really pop compared to the UHD60. 4K on a 10 foot screen probably would prove to be beneficial. However the Optoma UHD60 and UHD65, which are the only affordable 4K projectors on the market each have big deal breakers for me. With the UHD60 having a RGBCYW colour wheel (which to me gives underwhelming and un-natural images, even when calibrated) and the UHD65 having an input lag far too high for gaming. Neither having 3D is also a big deal breaker for me. If Optoma are to release a 4K projector with an RGBRGB colour wheel and decent input lag figures, I might be sold when prices start to come down over the coming years. As for now, I am perfectly happy with my 1080p HD131X (European HD25, not the 'e' model), which has an RGBRGB colour wheel, 17ms input lag and 3D. :-)
@tedbollinger3306
6 жыл бұрын
I would agree on the UHD60, however the UHD65 will actually put out a measured brighter image in its "Vivid" mode than the reference mode (fair color) on the UHD60. This really surprized us but you may recall that neither projector will hit its specified brightness in the "bright" mode without an overriding green cast. Vivid however can get you in the 1200-1400 lumen range which if the room is dark may be usuable on that large of screen depending on how many foot candles you are looking for. At 144" inch diagonal you should be able to come close to 16 foot candles especially if you can stay on the wide side of the zoom range.

P.S. If you are a hard core competitive gamer the UHD65 may not be for you, however if you turn off the "pure engine processing" you are good for most casual gaming.
@BedfordMarcus
6 жыл бұрын
I'm certainly not just a casual gamer. I have played on TV's with an input lag over 50ms and I can definitely feel it and find it very distracting. Yes, Vivid looks nice and I have a great understanding why many people use it, however I personally prefer the look of the Cinema and Reference modes. Personally, I calibrate my TV's and projector to D65/Rec.709 (using a colorimeter and test patterns) with all picture enhancements turned off.
@tedbollinger3306
6 жыл бұрын
Excellent, I also prefer reference as long as you have enough brightness for a given screen size. Yes, for serious gaming lower latency is definitely better. Neither of these projectors is quite fast enough for you.
@BedfordMarcus
6 жыл бұрын
My 2013 1080p projector (Optoma HD131x, not '131xe') has an input lag of 17ms according to ProjectorCentral.com which is an excellent figure (precisely 1 frame). The only other projector I have seen to rival that is the BenQ W1070 with a figure around 20ms. Most other projectors on the market today have a figure of 40 or 50ms, which is still good and something probably not noticeable in FPS games, and only competitive fighters. My calibrated setting (Reference) produces an image more than bright enough for my environment, even with the Eco lamp setting and some ambient lighting, it's still watchable (84" white screen, 17fL, 1250:1 contrast). 3D however is a bit of a different story as dark scenes do tend to look very murky when D65/Rec.709 calibrated, even in a pitch black room (only 2.1fL and 275:1 contrast ratio). I may move away from those industry standards slightly to try and obtain a much more watchable 3D image.
@ronaldjr2102
6 жыл бұрын
Any idea what the input lag is with a native 4K signal at 60fps with hdr on?
@tedbollinger3306
6 жыл бұрын
In the settings we prefer its bout 45ms, however if the motion is at 24 fps and the motion bothers you and you turn on "pure motion" it shoots up to as much as 120 ms, not recommended for serious gaming.
@chryslerprowlerv8
6 жыл бұрын
How do I get the best calibration for either projector? Can you recommend which projector will be best for movies and gaming
@tedbollinger3306
6 жыл бұрын
If you are not having it professionally calibrated (best way) we would suggest at least a semi calibration or set up with a good set up disc like Spears & Munsil HD Benchmark like we include with the UHD65. As far as which is best for movies that's easy, the UHD65 as far as color contrast and best movie like experience in a controlled light (dark room) however, if you are doing a very large screen (above 110") or need a screen in a lighted room then the UHD60 has the edge. For gaming it depends on the nature of your gaming. If you are a competitive serious gamer then the UHD60, if casual gaming then the UHD65 with all the "pure engine" items in off has proven OK for casual gaming.

In the US all UHD65's are black in color. In other parts of the world I am not sure. There should be a model and serial number on it somewhere and you may also want to check local resellers websites to see if indeed it is offered in white in your part of the world. In the US the UHD60 is always in white and is slightly brighter but not quite as good for accurate colors.

In the US the UHD65 has the "Pure Processing Engine" so if it is the same there you could go to the menu under image and then 2nd page and see if you can select "Pure Contrast" "Pure Color" and or "Pure Motion", then it should be the UHD65 as the UHD60 does not have those features
