@Liz W I think perhaps it may be the other way around. Many artists are studying contemporary successes and trying to replicate, with variations upon the formulaic theme. Whereas artists whom create truly timeless works may simply be using what they work best with, and with it creating what they believe sounds powerful, pleasing, and moving. Just a theory, but when you mix talent and a good ear, then peel away expectation and let them open your eyes, ears, and soul to something unique, you end up with "The Box" by Orbital.

Because it's hard as hell to get? I bought multiple copies of In Sides, and was annoyed that this version of The Box wasn't on all of them. It was too long to fit on the single-CD version of In Sides. Only the first 30,000 copies of In Sides sold in the U.S. came with a bonus CD that had this 28-minute version of The Box. Later in the U.S. the album was sold with a different bonus CD, which had the single "The Saint" as well as a few live recordings, but not the 28-minute The Box. So sad. The lyrics are utter nonsense but the voices add so much to the music.

Sorry, no comparison to Bach. I wish I knew how to explain why without sounding like an uptight prick... there's almost zero counterpoint here, certainly no inversion or retrograde. These were the raw materials by which JSB wove the fugal tapestry, and the same techniques that composition students struggle through as exercises when studying his work. To ape his style, even badly, is really fucking hard. By contrast, the harpsichord (hammered dulcimer?) at 9:10 serves as just another synthetic keyboard varying & repeating the same chord progressions and melody -- as almost all contemporary "popular" music does. That's something that JSB never EVER did. The basis of Orbital's artistry (I'd argue) is a different kind of tapestry, one of instrumentation. It's basically theme & variation through a system of electronic arrangements, where the combinations of thousands of available virtual instruments IS the groove and the aesthetic content. There's more too, yes. But it's a completely different musical paradigm. It's interesting though to imagine what JSB might come up with in a modern context!
