Yes! That was started in 1987 in the Pacific Northwest. They've also seen then do the same thing with jellyfish. There was another one in British Columbia where young male orcas would rearrange prawn and crab traps in a kind of game.

Some orca in another region started wearing fish on his snout, soon all orcas there copied the behaviour, making it part of their culture. Now you can speculate why, but its certainly not fashion.

The point is that in both cases, they aren't doing it out of anger. They are doing it out of boredom and thrill seeking. It changes the tactics that are more likely to prevent future repeats of the problem. For the kids, make sure society is providing them with school, sports/music, and/or work to keep them busy. For the orcas...? I don't know. Maybe invent some kind of toy to throw overboard to distract them from the boat.

@@peachyflush no I propose we start permitting the use of non lethal and humane deterent to prevent further incidents. I'm not gonna be the guy who makes that deterent but there are plenty of engineers who would be capable. If I remember correctly tho they're considered extremely endangered and trying to shoo them away at all would be illegal even tho they are already causing potentially lethal injury by attempting to play with boat propellers.

I am writing a research paper on animal welfare and why other animals are more intelligent than humans give them credit for, and one of my points is that they also develop cultures given the right circumstances for a culture to form. So, if anyone has any good academic resources for this, I would be eternally grateful 🙏 I am working on finding them myself tho otherwise!!
