Don’t forget orchids have aerial roots! These roots prefer being above the soil because they absorb moisture and carbon dioxide directly from the air. (Fun fact-this is because they originally used them to climb trees to reach light in denser forests) Sometimes if they’re brown and crunchy there’s still a thin little root stuck in the casing that will grow when the plant enters its leaf/root growing phase (it will not flower in this phase bc flowering takes up a lot of energy and it wants to use this for its roots and leaves!) Love your videos!

Rather than just breaking the root to get the orchid out the pot, just cut the pot or squish the pot untill everything comes out. Even though the leaf is yellow, the green is full of nutrients and you should let the leaf go yellow first so the nutrition can go to the plant. Also, don’t just cut roots like that, you could be cutting perfectly fine roots just because it dry.

I was given an orchid after my mother's funeral and we kept it inside for a really long time, it bloomed every couple months or so and it didn't take a lot of care but we had to move so while painting the place we decided to leave it in one of those hanging baskets made for air plants, we ended up accidentally leaving it behind and when we came back years later after we bought back the house the plant was absolutely massive, it had arms that reached in every direction, it's blooms were so vibrant and alive, we left it in that place and it flourished for about 10 years until a hurricane had ripped it down and thrown it on the ground, there wasn't much we could do other than try and replant it but it was just too large and we ended up cutting a bunch of the stems to try and save it, somehow this plant pulled through but it only had one stem left over in the end, still have it to this day, for some reason it used to be a vibrant purple but now the blooms are mostly just a pale white with a hint of purple towards the middle

When you say you left it in a hanging basket made for air plants, was the orchid still in it's pot, or were the roots exposed? Orchids are bea-u-ti-ful flowers but they absolutely were not created to live squished up in a pot. They are crawlers on the floors of the rain forest. Anyway, seems like your orchid was exceptionally happy with that spot. I never hear about orchids growing huge like that in a pot.
