You dont need to do chains on Gen 3 engines as a preventative. There not evidence of stretching like previous models. Thanks for the support ❤

I have 160k miles on a 2017 mk7 golf R with manual transmission. Is it worth just putting a new timing chain in while I have the engine area apart for a water pump/thermostat housing swap?

My stack of tsi chains says differently. I wouldn’t do it for preventative as there’s MVB for checking stretch but they definitely all stretch.

Did you go with a stock replacement or an upgraded cam?

Change the oil every 3000 miles on these engines and you’ll never have any issues. Aside from coolant leaks due to overuse of plastic!

Hey kayla could the sump strainer / oil pickup be blocked ? Iam unsure on the golf Rs but when i was working in the garage that used to be a issue on the older VAGs with the strainers clogging up and limiting the oil causing it to become noisy.

Ah that sucks, have you checked everywhere else? Fcp, urotuning, Ecs?

Cam shafts in the Golf R’s are junk. My first engine had cam issues + consumed oil I’m a mainline tech so I just warranty replaced the whole long block. Second engine brand new VW long block same deal developed cam shift faults within couple months.
