Just curious. Would it not be easier to "hand file" one of the depth rakers using a guide and file, then, once that raker is at the proper height, THEN adjust the grinder wheel to where it just barely touches the hand filed raker and then continue with the grinder from there?

Thanks for the feedback. It might be easier for you to use that method. I can't think of anything wrong with it. Just be sure to chick with a a tool like the Husky roller guide or stihl chain tool before proceeding to all the depth gauges.

As far as I have read oregon is the clone. Well all those style are manufactured in Italy by the same company. Then rebranded.

Just got my new Tecomec, thank you for the great video, excellent explanation. After doing one chain, realized I was doing the depth gauges totally wrong, I now understand why you do only every second raker now & the 10* down angle. Thanks again.

Hello, What angles do you use (all) ? Do you change thicker gridding wheel exmp.145×6mm×22 ? Thank you in advance for your time.

I use a thicker grinding wheel for depth gauges, 6mm to 8mm, 1/4in to 5/16in. the wheel is dressed flat but at an angle which makes the cutting surface wider. the top of the depth gauge should be ground to approximately 10 degrees (lower in front.) this allows the cutter to tip a little while cutting without being forced up. This is accomplished by adjusting the side plate index, using the knob on the back of the grinder. I hope I'm being clear enough. I wish i could draw it for you on paper.

Nice video, thanks. Suggest you edit most of it out, so viewers don't have to watch you sharpen every single raker!

Great videos and many thanks for taking the time to share your approach. Why don't manufacturers do similarly clear instructional videos, if they did we'd all be happier and more competent in using such machines!

I can't see a reason to skip teeth when grinding the rakers. When doing the teeth it's required but the rakers are all being ground in the same direction on the chain sharpener. When hand filing skipping rakers actually leads to the raker being filed/ground down in a different direction as you switch sides but a chain sharpener doesn't replicate that.

Killer- Thanks for the feed back. I don't actually skip rakers, I grind one side, the switch to the other, carefully adjust so raker heights are equal, then grind that side. If you are in a hurry, you can probably skip those extra steps without significant problems, but it would be wise to check the first raker you grind to see if it is close in height to the other side.

Austin you have some very helpful videos, but most of all your presentations are precise and to the point. I would love to see you brake a chain using the Oregon chain mender going thru the process step by step. Thanks again...

Thanks for the feed back. One of the reasons I posted this was to demonstrate that depth gauges can be ground quickly and accurately, especially when cutters have been ground back due to damage. When you get a rocked chain in the shop, in can take an hour or more to set the depth gauges with a flat file.

Is it possible to use this maschine also for sharpening hedge trimmer blade ?
@charlesrandle7915

supposedly nothing is impossible, but, this is a very specialized tool for sharpening chain saw chains. It wouldn't work for hedge trimmers. Curious, using google, I found some youtube vids about sharpening powered hedge trimmers. They seemed to use files. I wonder if it might be more practical to replace the blade with new parts. Good luck with this.

I forgot to ask why it is that you only cut rakers on only one side at a time (skipping a tooth). I did not see where an adjustment was made that would change the chain in any way as to matter. What am I missing? Love the video. Very informative

Lonnie- two reasons, first, because of the geometry of the grinder, the grinder wheel is at a different height for right and left cutters. Second, right and left cutters are rarely exactly the same length also the depth gauges, theoretically, shouldn't be exactly the same height. Suggestion, try setting a chain doing both sides at one pass. measure the depth gauges and see how it works. Then get back and let us know how it works. Thanks.

@@charlesrandle7915, will do. I understand about the geometry and slight angle differences. It appears to me that maybe handfiling the rakers may end up being the best and faster way to get them to the proper heights. I just did not want to "over think" things.

@@lonniechartrand- the time it takes to set depth gauges varies by how much you have to take off. if you are sharpening a damaged chain when that needs a lot of metal removed from the cutters, it can be a chore. also if you are using a regular chain tool, like the stihl tool, you won't be able to get the 10 degree slope that really helps a chain cut faster. the newer husqvarna roller guides have a sloped depth gauge guide that will do the job. anyway, its up to you to find what works best for you. So give it a try and tell us how it works out.

I like the way you dress the wheel and the 10 degree angle. Sharpening is a pain in the ass but when you get it right it is butter
