I hope you are feeling better now :) I am in the same boat, watching these videos from my bed. Tomorrow morning I have my organic chemistry final, yet I can't bring myself up to study for it properly. And i haven't seen my friends or anyone for days because I've been holed up in my room. Not even my roommates who literally live in the same house as me. I haven't even eaten anything in almost 30 hours but I can't get out of bed no matter how painful my migraine is or how hungry I am. Depression really really really sucks. It deprives us of so much in our lives. I would never wish it upon anyone. I hope everyone dealing with depression finds a way out of that darkness. ❤

This is one of my pet peeves - drawing absolute stereochemistry when what is intended is relative stereochemistry. The straight bold/dashed bonds are a useful convention for what you want to draw, but simply writing (rac) or (+-) would also suffice. The question you have actually drawn is much harder to tackle because the solution necessarily involves a desymmetrisation, using e.g. a chiral Lewis acid in much the same way as a Jacobsen kinetic resolution but with CN.

If you're using CN- don't you have to actually use something like HCN? In that case, why would the H on the oxygen come from the solvent (polar protic?) instead of from the HCN?

I used NBS in hv on the starting material, then I used LDA as a bulky base. Then I did O3 in SMe2. Then I took the three carbon product from that reaction and reduced with NaBH4 in ethanol. Then I used XS HBr. The I used 1 eq LDA. Can anyone tell me if this is correct?
