So glad I stumbled upon your channel this morning! I think I will start tackling the paper jungle this weekend.... simply putting it ALL into boxes is going to make a difference! I have piles in places I didn’t even know I had, and I always keep papers I never again look at, and can’t find the papers I later need! When I first got married, I had a great filing system that worked perfectly for me... but when we moved to our second home I somehow decided to change my system (should have remembered not to fix things that aren’t broken) and it was a fiasco that hasn’t ended 35 years later! It’s amazing how much one can accomplish in just 15 dedicated minutes... my best friend and I used to call each other and say, ok, let’s do a 15-minute sweep cleaning up an area in the house and then call each other to see what we got done. It was amazingly productive... why I ever let things get out of hand is beyond me (I guess life just happens!) but your videos sure do inspire me to get things in shape! THANK YOU!

2023 comment, another good post to update with a focus on family caregivers who go between houses. When I last was in that season I used an idea from my labor and delivery coach and packed myself a "go bag", a tote or backpack small enough to go under an airline seat with clean undies, a clean tee shirt, basic toiletries, a smart phone charger, and a personal bit of recreation like an escape novel or some easy crafting. (I knit hats.)

Loved your encouraging video. When my three were young and I worked full time I threw all my mail into a portable file which had checks, stamps, envelopes, sticky notes, stationary, files, etc. (I had a mini office in the top tray.) While I waited for them at gymnastics or the doctor's office I did all my paperwork. The sisters waiting with me wrote their thank-yous, filled out birthday cards for relatives, or did art on the file foders which I still treasure. Keeping the pile down became a fun game because all I had to do was process what was in the file and then remove it from the file when I walked in the door.

Hi Norrine, After a long day at work I like to relax and watch your channel, to see what you’ve been up to. This subject of paper really hit home with me. Let me tell you why... Lately I’ve been feeling like I have no control over things, such as mean people, negative situations at work, bad drivers, etc. It is a bad feeling. But when I listened to you, I realized that I CAN control what my home looks like, I CAN control messes. So yesterday I went through a pile of papers, took care of business and it was a good feeling. Cleaning I CAN control and it is great. THANK YOU NORRINE for all your ideas. You made me feel better. YOU ROCK! 😎

my "stuff I gotta do" notes were on scraps of paper, backs of envelopes, Post-it notes and whatnot all over the house. got the bright idea to put it all in a purse size note book. that worked for a few weeks until I lost my book and my mind. now I have a huge 5 subject notebook from back-to-school bargains with an even more obnoxiously ostentatious ribbon bow. haven't lost it yet! plus, I have started added footnotes about it being a really good day, remember to make that recipe for......it was really well received. It's turning into a journal.

Hello from Dallas. Many years ago I found a piece that I use all the time. It’s one of those “that was easy” buttons. After 15 minutes I hit the top of the button. It may be available, I think it was staples. I came across mine in a deserted office suite. I’ve had it for many years and love it.

This is exactly what I do when paperwork gets overwhelming. Break it down into the categories, sort those by date and get rid of duplicates, then deal with each action as needed. It helps me to use an accordian file as I sort. That way once the time is up all I have to do is move it. Have you ever addressed magazine and catalog clutter in a prior video? Sometimes that's a struggle for me as I can't let go of them and they pile up. Everywhere. Especially quilting/crafting magazines. It's always nice when you post another video. They are always informative and helpful. Thank you!

Categorizing the papers was the big step forward when I did mine this summer. I was lucky not to have too much categories, so that took one long afternoon to sort them. I ended with half of the amount of binders compared to before sorting. Norrine, very good video. How long you'll have to keep your papers varies from country to country, that's important to know. Unfortunately, finding out how long you'll have to keep them isn't published, that is the information is not easily accessible. Before I got stuck and would give up, I decided to toss out the papers of stuff that I no longer have. Bye bye papers, what a relief! I also had a list of the categories at hand, so if in doubt, have a glance at the list. Once I had the categories, I sorted each category, like insurances, by company name, e.g., and if you feel fancy, sort that alphabetically. Ideally, the papers within each category/subcategory should be sorted by date, like the oldest at the bottom and the latest at the top. Norrine, I'm always looking forward to your videos. I watch them and feel consoled that there is a chance that I'll live a stress-free life one day, and I can see that on the horizon. You are a big help and support. Thank you.

Hi! love your channel! Just a note about medical bills...For people who rarely go to the doctor who have never had to pay for hospital visits, surgery or major medical expenses it won't be a big deal. For anyone else, it's just my opinion and food for thought. It used to be keeping medical bills, EOB's and receipts for 3 yrs was great advice. However, after seeing what Medicare and insurance has put people I know through, it would be well advised to at the very least scan them in to a back up or keep the hard copy. Keep receipts indefinitely and watch for double billing. Here is why: First, I am acquainted with a couple who had a hospital come back after not having seen a doctor for years for procedures (weekly outpatient which had a copay) and say bills were never paid, put them through collections, etc. and attempt to collect additional fees. They the presence of mind to catch it and fight it. The gentleman had scanned both EOBs and receipts and produced them for the hospital, who in turn, was forced to abandon it's collection process. The problem was stated to them that systems had been changed supposedly at the hospital and then the insurance company stated they hadn't billed the right coding. Regardless, had they not kept receipts longer than the standard 3 yrs, they couldn't have proven they didn't owe the money, which amounted to thousands of dollars. This, they found out had happened to hundreds of patients. The second reason we need to be cautious is that we live in a digital age and sometimes paper is like gold. I personally have been notified my medical records have been "accessed unlawfully" (hacked) twice now by 2 different companies/entities. I received the notice this week for the class action lawsuit against one of them. What would be your advice to on keeping things to protect people in these situations? I am sorting to declutter right now. :-)

Ladybugs & Sunshine, I was told by a lawyer that medical bills can not go to collection. They will sort of hint at that “we will have to take action” etc but never officially send it to an outside collection. I live in the US, Kansas City Missouri. Does anyone else have info about collections??

Sorry...had to edit this. Not used to replying or posting for that matter. And I replied 3 different times from my notifications bell. Oops! So glad your state has protections. You are fortunate. So the long and short of it is that I can only speak to what I saw and what I was privy to. In my state this is legal and does/did happen. Now, even if collections is not an issue, I would urge individuals to keep bills and receipts once a bill has been paid whether it is in a lump sum or you are on a payment plan because...once again "lost payments" and double billing occur. Account numbers can be changed accidentally and balances not get zeroed out. You want to have those dates of service, proof your insurance paid, what you are responsible for, what your have paid, etc. They can come back and ask for it. And a lawyer may be right-all day long. However, in states like mine, it can either cost you thousands in attorney's fees or in hospital bills if you don't. Unfortunately, it happens.

Yeah, paper is scary! I think sometimes I overthink things and end up with too many categories to manage. I like being organized, but I hate organizing - I've watched The Minimal Mom's video on paper clutter, and part of her advice is to deal with paper the moment it comes into the house, so you only have necessary papers left to sort and file. I've been doing that so long while fretting over my categories and filing system, and I've reduced my paper clutter considerably already. Now I'll use your video to work on what's left over to file/keep.

I appreciate your tips & they may work for some, but even the most cluttered paper stackers (like myself) would be messed up if they were to put all papers, from all rooms into one big mess. First, even if it seems disorganized to someone else, we know what is where. I will only work to declutter one surface at a time. Second, never, never, never file something that requires action into the mass of other paperwork. I always pull out bills to be paid & anything else that requires me to do something with it BEFORE it can be filed & put it in an "Action " file on my desk or in a wall file. That way it doesn't get forgotten. Then you can go about the business of sorting, shredding, tossing, & setting-up files for the rest. Just my opinion & thought it might be helpful to others.

Computers were supposed to usher in the "paperless office." Instead, they've ended up generating tons more! My prediction for the end of the human race is ultimate suffocation in all the mounds of paper! LOL You have given great tips. I just have a disorganized mind. LOL I ordered the blackout gizmo; so much easier than ripping out pieces of bills etc. ;) My own bugaboo with categorizing is not remembering what category I assigned when I need to find the item again. Suppose (to take a ridiculous off-the-wall example) that I were filing sandwiches. Peanut butter and jelly. Hmmm...did I file it under "P" for peanut butter, under "J" for jelly, or under "S" for sandwich? This sort of disorganization lives in my brain, and has always made it hard for me to find what I want when I need it. Currently, (habitually) my desktop is rarely fully visible; it hides under all kinds of papers. However, as long as it's out, and not hiding in a file, I can usually find what I'm after within a minute, tops. How ironic is that??!! My secondary issue is that (in contrast to the above), when I do try to organize, I get too detailed, and down to the point where each of 5 papers would be in their own category, yet taking a whole folder for 1 piece of paper seems silly and wasteful. Conversely, a "miscellaneous" folder in lieu of that would probably end up being an entire file drawer (slight exaggeration), and thus back to the original issue of having to look through massive amounts to find one thing. With bills, I have a separate file box on my desk, and I keep a current "running year." When I pay the current month's bill, I remove the corresponding month's bill from the prior year, and into the shredder it goes. That is probably my best organized part of the office. Though, that has fallen off since my husband passed; I'm struggling to deal with anything...
