When i came to live in Hong Kong with my family, the end of the 60s, there really was no Taiwan - people still spoke about Formosa. And the big idea was that they would soon take back the whole of China for the KMT. None of these presenters are old enough to remember the huge `Double Tenth` (10/10) that were held here. And there`s far too much back story to write about - simply to say that the dream of China and Taiwan (which was a Japanese colony for a bit) is to be one country - the trick is going to be under which type of government. People in the West have a very small idea of what this is all about - Western governments will cynically use these two places to further their own aims! Let`s hope that the Chinese government is the adult in the room and isn`t manipulated as Putin was.

Yes China has legitimate claim to the island of Taiwan/ furmosa but the people of Taiwan are largely happy with thier current situation. Allow Taiwan to hold open elections on the matter with UN offical oversight. If they vote to rejoin China then ok, if not then let them officially be recognized as a independent soviergn country with all the burdens and benefits that come along with it. I think China should be the mature adult in the room and relinquish its claim to the island. Let the democratic process take its role in shaping the future of the island. This would show the world that China is interested in maintaining global stability and embraces a people's right to self determination, even when that comes as a loss to themselves. Honestly what could be gained by China getting Taiwan? Is there natural resources, are the people opressed? What logical reason is there to regain Taiwan? Is it a face saving matter? Let's be honest here China is a giant nation on its own, adding Taiwan to it won't really move the needle either way.

Actually, Chinese communists are very happy about what the US has been doing about Taiwan. For one, every country has to find a reason to spend more money on defense. So, American actions in Taiwan provide China with the best reason to develop its military. For two, allow me to tell you a piece of truth about Taiwan: the US has been helping the Chinese communists. Because the US has a Canada, I hope you will be able to understand American actions and American history a tiny bit better. So, you owe me big time. Because the US has a Canada, please remember the British soldiers burnt the white house in 1814, which is about 40 years after the US independence. Almost exactly the same, communist China has been in a situation similar to the US in its early years. Both countries have to face external and internal opposition, and both governments desperately need to consolidate their power internally. As a communist government, Chairman Mao's job was far more difficult than that of George Washington ever was because the anti-communist forces inside and outside of China were far more powerful than the anti-independent forces against the USA. Of course, the US got the white house burnt by the British, and China had to fight the Korean and Vietnam wars. However, the easiest way to achieve internal peace is for the opposition to leave on their own. Thank the heavens that China has Taiwan, where the anti-communist force went. Similarly, the USA has Canada, where the British loyalists went. Just imagine, if the British loyalists had no Canada could go, or KMT had no Taiwan could go, both revolutionary wars would have to be longer and bloodier. Therefore, politically, the value of Taiwan to the Chinese communist revolution is exactly that of Canada to the American independence. Fortunately for the Chinese communists, the Americans don't understand their own history and have been working very hard and spending resources in Taiwan to help Chinese communists unify the Chinese hearts and minds internally and worldwide.
