Oh wow I just got one of those at a thrift shop and I was wondering the weird straps that up because I was like this doesn’t work for anything. I thought it was to wrap around and like secure the bag so that it was wrapped up I don’t know.

Fun fact : musette is a French word designating this type of small combat bags. The French armed forces still use this word for their combat backpacks today.

Just found two of these that belonged to my g-uncle. He was in the Army Corp of Engineers and built the scale model of Tokyo for the future bombing. Recently discovered a lot of his gear from WW2. His full footlocker with photos, uniform, etc. Lots of history. Thanks for this video! Renewed my interest in his service! and

iPad....lol 😆. Dad humor already. Lololol 😆😆! Great bags. I've personally worn out two.... My Dad said that they were great, but on the M1936 gear they were a P.I.A. He was a CWO when The War started and could carry it as a "haversack" style bag with a full "D" ring AP Strap (Shoulder Strap). Interesting facts: The Musette Bag predates 1930. Officers were issued Leather Capped Bottomed Musette Bags (Old Horse Cavalry holdover). They were issued in "pairs" to Mounted Infantry in lieu of saddle bags with a special canvas "spreader" to clip them together and to protect the back of the horse. The Spreader was covered in D-rings, round rings and straps to attach shelter halves, blankets with cover, the old Army sleeping bags(blanket-bed-tent roll), raincoats/coats, and ALL other gear given out to equip the Mounted Infantry in the field..... The Old Man said that the US Army kept the M1943 OD Dark Green (OG 106-7) Musette Bags in the inventory WAY past Korea because of their utility. The "early" light green/Khaki bags were given out to GI's leaving the service by the thousands and the rest went to the Allies and Israel. And we still had thousands left in inventory...🙄 I'm keeping the few I have left... Dad's name is on them and the rest of the siblings don't want them.

Okay, I've been watching your channel on and off for about a month. And I have purchased a very good reproduction of the M1936 Musette Bag. I know how the straps work, and that you can install it on the suspender system. What I'd like to know if, if you know what that loop is for? No one seems to know. I hope you can shed some light on the subject. I have not had to correct you once :) At least you do your research :)

I’m probably wrong but I think it’s for a let down rope, if you were caught in a tree or high up place, you could use a rope attached to your bag to get down

I am not super familiar with the equipment we used in the second world war, but that bag is very similar to the M56 and M61 buttpack used in the vietnam war. I have a full impression for a U.S. soldier in vietnam, and the M56/M61 pack is probably inspired by that. With the exception that it is used on the back, not on the front. They look really similar though. Cool to learn about the evolution of our soldier's gear!

The world war two had a strap I had you two d-rings on the bottom that you could wear as a music bag over the shoulder or put clothing and personal gear in it and rations

@@chickennugget4724 “At The Front” is a solid resource for US/German stuff, but it gets pretty expensive, EBay can be good and is a lot cheaper than ATF but is some times less reliable or lower quality, and amazon is good if it has what you need but it can be hard to find stuff on there
