This is also exactly what happened to my 1.6 Xbox. I ordered 5x Panasonic FJ 3300uf 6.3v capacitors to replace the stock Nichicon HM capacitors. According to some forums I discovered while researching suitable replacements, HM caps manufactured between 2001-2004 are known for having high failure rates. I found this video after I had already diagnosed my problem, but I think that as these consoles continue to age, this video will be very useful to a lot of people looking to fix their Xboxes. Maybe they will opt to have a retro video game shop repair them, but at least the knowledge will be out there.

I think there is a reason why M$ using these unreliable Nichicon caps. Nichicon HM-series caps has a very low impedance value - around 10mR at 100kHz for 3300uF. I suppose this essential for filtering high frequency noise, that may affect overall system stability. So, I think that swapping these caps to any other with same capacitance and voltage may be not enough. Nichicon PW series used here as replacement also has low impedance value (about 40mR). But other capacitors may have much higher imp.value and may be not suitable as replacement.

Chances are good the dates on those save files are the result of the owner not bothering to set the clock. The Xbox was released in 2001, but this is a v1.6 board, meaning it was probably manufactured late in the OG Xbox's life cycle around 2004-2005.

I'm already in the process of ordering caps for both of my Xbox that have failed caps. They've both (v1.2 and v.14) had the exact same 3x Nichicon caps fail (actually exploded in the v1.2), but somehow the Xbox still function just fine. Though the v1.2 doesn't want to stay turned off (but that's probably the also dead clock capacitor). Note to everyone: To avoid your Xbox having its caps fail, unplug it or switch it off at the powerpoint. That's why my first Xbox is still in perfect working order unlike my second hand ones (including its Thompson drive). Edit: Also, the v1.6 does have a clock capacitor (it's the lone gold one near the IDE connector), it's just of a better quality than the original ones. It could still fail given time. BTW, the Xbox you repaired was a v1.6/1.6b, meaning that its from 2004 at the earliest. The original owner probably didn't bother setting the clock fully (I know that I never did).
