I just hope it is faithful to the Crux of the story. Whether they have scenes or dialogue that's not in the novel, if it is done to tell the story, I'm fine with it. As long as the essence of the story is Faithfully adhered to. I really do love this story. It's one of the most intriguing works of fiction I've ever read. The messages contained within the story are quite valuable. It would be a shame to lose all of this in Hollywood special effects. Good job. Love you channel so far.

The hard part is the depth/breadth of perspectives in the text. One other commenter or youtuber referred to it as 'head-hopping'. As readers, we were given a lot, and it could work in such a medium. Take one scene as an example. The Lady Jessica confronting Hawat leading up to the Harkonen attack. There was so much invisible calculation occurring, that much of the suspense was psychological. A casual viewer would miss it just looking. That said, I've a strong hunch that an artful solution will be found. If he pulls this off, I think it puts Villenueve safely in the ranks of Spielberg and Lucas

It's very interesting your comments about the early experimental aviators. I remember reading about the origin of the Icarus legend and it places them at seaside towns which were populated with slope soaring gulls that have no need for flapping and the triangular lateen rig sails of small fishing vessels would have been known to such earlier experimenters. It seems plausible that such folks may have been both observant of gulls flap-less gliding on slope uplift and had practical experience with the lift generation of lateen rigs just as we sailboarders can run down sand dunes and glide temporarily with the rigs alone if held in the right place. A lateen rig is half a rogallo wing.... the original form of hangglider , so it's entirely plausible innovative early sailors who had grasped a few princples of aerodynamic stability from their sailing experience might have crafted some early form of hangglider from easily available sailing components common in seaside ports. Stories of their success or failures would have been embellished by narrators with no clue about sailing principles and fanciful ideas about feathers falling off being responsible for their crashes would replace the reality of aerodynamic stalls to simplify the stories for an equally ignorant audience. We tend to dismiss such accounts of possible earlier flyers due to silly aspects of the stories that may have been added later . Otto Lilienthal died in a crash due to a stall. In future centuries his story may be similarly dismissed as fable due to some embellished detail in a similar manner.

I suspect that the original illustrations by John Schoenherr and particularly his version of the ornithopter have always been a huge influence on what the readers expected the 'thopters to be. The filmed versions so far which are more like boxes with stubby winglets have always been something of a disappointment as can be reflected by many of the comments listed. By the same token though, if these indeed are more dragonfly-like as they appear to be with correspondingly large wings, it will be interesting to see they will appear fully animated. It could be that the image of large flapping wings just look too odd for many and could explain why they have been avoided in the end. For example, look at some human sized ornithopter experimental craft videos or newsreels to see what I mean. Curiously one of the more recent ones looks particularly graceful, a human powered ornithopter video kzitem.info/news/bejne/kXttnZ5nop-Vm4Y As far as Dune thopter animations, the animation done here (kzitem.info/news/bejne/uHyNlm2qrHV1h3Y) I thought worked, but the design's physics don't work (theoretical lift far behind cg)

I really like the thopter from the original Dune videogame , with that insect-like shape. this new thopter for the new film looks too related to our present time instead of the year 10000 in the future, i would have expected a more organic approach, nature mimic, closer to an artistic thing, since Dune society is not that dependant on mechanical technology. But we'll have to wait and see for ourself.
@secretsofdune

That's an interesting point and a fair one. There are many artist renditions that make them look much more hybrid and Insect/bird like, with wild colors and shapes. I think that's why I can appreciate more daring renditions like the ones we see in Jodorowsky's Dune for feeling much further into the future than normal.

Many an aesthete has compromised the function of their stilsuits for fashion. The tribe took their water, before they gave too much of it to Shai'Hulud. Function, capacity, effect, and efficiency. Form follows function. There is zero reason to assume designers of the time would not develop the flight models *beyond* the capabilities of flying insects, nor to assume they would try to replicate the appearance, when all they wanted/needed was the function. There's plenty of examples to the above points in the story, you've got 50 days, so hope on it! Also, I just looked at the example you mentioned, from the 1992 pc game. It literally looks like they took a cobra gunship canopy, on a dragonfly body. It's great as a one -person vehicle, but the models in the book could all carry a crew.

I hope he avoids the whole laser + shield = atomics of the books. It made everything seem so contrived. It doesn't look like a civilization in which both elements are as easy to get would survive without going full apocalyptical. I wish he just made the shields very resistent against lasguns, so plenty of oportunity for melee would be present, like in Warhammer 40k
@justareader____
3 жыл бұрын
Dude...that’s the whole point of the weaponry in the book, and it’s actually brilliant, not contrived. Think about it-dozens of warring countries have nuclear weapons, but no one uses them-why? They’re afraid the other will nuke them. Taking away the shield + lasgun mechanic destroys one of the most crucial parts in the story. Without that, many of the psychological battle strategies used in the book are impossible to portray. It’s a game of fear (for instance, house atreidies hid one large shield after the Harkonnen attack, and when the enemy used lasguns, it damaged both of them significantly. This ended up helping Paul and his mother escape since the enemy doesn’t know if they have shields or not and don’t want to risk killing themselves. The Fremen use similar tactics-they don’t use shields and carry projectile weapons due to how the energy from shields drives all nearby worms into a killing frenzy. So the fremen have both an advantage and disadvantage. Control of the worms and freedom from harkonnen rule, but no shield protection. I get why you feel this way, but you clearly don’t understand the implications of this aspect of the story. Not only is it very original and interesting, it drives a lot of the story forward (so it’s not just there for the sake of it-it actually plays a MASSIVE role in the plot).And like I said before-it’s realistic compared to our world. Fantasized, sure, but realistic with how we have weapons so powerful, we can’t use them for fear we’ll just kill each other and gain nothing. And as far as Dune lore goes, this also drives forward the war of assassins and the whole focus on poisoning and the constant fear of it. I mean could you imagine being in the Dune universe’s shoes? One day, someone invents a shield and you don’t know it, and you blast each other and end up wiping out both armies or something? 😂 it would be a bit of “uh...now what?” Hence the swords and poisons used in the story. In short, if Denis took away the original purpose and consequence of the shied, he breaks the whole story. Shields play a huge part in Dune’s world building and plot, and to take them away would rob the story of both originality and excellent world building. There is nothing contrived about it.

Funny that you dont mention Icarus, if anyone things that Bukhari actually flew by flapping his arms covered in feathers needs medical attention. This is how FH describes the ‘thropter “Paul fastened his safety harness, saw that his mother was secure, checked the aircraft. The wings were at full spread-rest, their delicate metal interleavings extended. He touched the retractor bar, watched the wings shorten for jet-boost takeoff the way Gurney Halleck had taught him. The starter switch moved easily. Dials on the instrument panel came alive as the jetpods were armed.” “He broke off as the Duke kicked on the jet brakes. The ship bucked as its tail pods whispered to silence. Stub wings elongated, cupped the air. The craft became a full 'thopter as the Duke banked it, holding the wings to a gentle beat, pointing with his left hand off to the east beyond the factory crawler” Why would you not reference this? It’s quite clearly based on the physiology of a bird

I could have mentioned many more things but I needed to keep the video short and cover other ground. This wasn't a history of ornithopters, more like a history of Dune ornithopters. These look great. Exactly what came to mind when reading decades ago. Huge ornithopter fan here. The Lynch versions were one of the few disappointments in Masters' production design and these will more than compensate, particularly if the flight animation looks convincing and pays attention to some flight physics. One assumes and hopes the animators have been studying highspeed photography of insects. Building working mechanisms for them is fun . Here's one from early 1990s www.mckeewildthings.com/image/dragonmechweb181_Copy34652.jpg www.mckeewildthings.com/image/Dragonflybenchweb550_C34640.jpg May be of dubious interest but I designed an ornithopter for a kids book and exhibition in 1987. These designs in the real world belong more to smaller drones. Butterflies for example have very efficient wings which are being experimented with nowadays. On bigger aircraft, this makes less sense. You see the main thing is propulsion and if you can get that out of a propeller or a jet engine. There is no need for the wings to flex, this would just overcomplicate things unnecessarily. Our vehicles are unnatural in a way. Wheels instead of legs and propellors and jet engines instead of flexible wings. These are not possible for an animal to do. I would still like to see if it is possible to make an aircraft like this.

This movie had the opportunity to depict western fencing as the serious and effective martial art that it is. So, for me, despite the movies beauty, I remain disheartened and can only watch and think of what could have been. I’m sorry I don’t mean to be polemic I’m as excited about this movie as anyone but as a western martial artist I had hopes that have been dashed by the previews. Once again the bias for eastern sword arts and design has infiltrated the sword props and techniques used in this latest adaptation. I maintain that It is the Rapier that should be wielded by the house Atreides and the denizens of the Imperium, not some unholy sci-fi version of the Japanese Katana. Please allow me this opportunity to explain: I do not contest the fact that single combat with knives is the most prevalent style described in the novel. Knives are mentioned 125 times while swords are only mentioned 25 times, however, there are many metaphoric references to fencing and when swords are referenced specifically it’s clear that the training received is founded in the art of European Fencing and the Sword used in practice is a Rapier. Here are a few of the most prominent examples. When Gurney Halleck arrives to the training room to give Paul a lesson he brings along a host of weapons: “Halleck dropped the weapons on the exercise table, lined them up-the rapiers, the bodkins, the kindjals, the slow-pellet stunners, the shield belts”(Herbert, 75 books.apple.com/us/book/dune/id597944491.) Rapiers are a kind of sword that developed based on Renaissance Humanist ideals. Given that the philosophy of Herberts Novel shares these ideals, it makes sense that Rapiers are the swords of choice in the Imperium. Rapiers are the only swords mentioned by name in the book. Rapiers are historically known to be the pinnacle swords designed explicitly for single combat; so when Duke Leto relates to His Son the intricate nature of statecraft he uses a fencing metaphor: ”Knowing where the trap is-that’s the first step in evading it. This is like single combat, Son, only on a larger scale-a feint within a feint within a feint…seemingly without end.” (Herbert, 97 books.apple.com/us/book/dune/id597944491.) Feints are common to all fighting systems, however, given the nature of Pauls training he is evidently referencing either doublé degagé or a triplé, both are specific fencing techniques known as compound attacks involving three or more feints. Documentation of fencing/fighting began in Spain as early as 1458 and 1471 and has continued to this day. Many of treatises on fencing described techniques using a Rapier but were not exclusively for the sword**, however, the method of teaching principles of distance,position, tempo, technique, and strategy, common to all combative arts, including, bayonets and knives, was through swordsmanship. This concept is represented in this excerpt describing gladiatorial combat with knives between Feyd-Rautha and a captured Atreides fighting man: “He held his knife sword-fashion, cocked slightly outward in the stance of a trained fighter.” (Herbert, 671 books.apple.com/us/book/dune/id597944491.) This is illustrative of the fact that, at least within the fighting tradition of the house Atreides, let alone the imperium in general, that Rapier swordsmanship provided the fundamental principles of combat employed even when the weapon is not a sword. I could expound at length with regard this topic and continue to hypothesize upon metaphoric and directly related references to swords like descriptions of the arms of guards wielding swords but, I feel, it would belabor my point. Fencing theory was well studied and rapiers are a common; much more common that we’re led to believe from David Linches adaptation, where everyone wears a dagger in the very same location a sword should have been worn. The question is; What might the they look like? It would be a mistake to simply utilize 16th century Rapier designs, that most people associate with silly romps like the Princess Bride, for the serious and deadly weapons that represent the fighting prowess of: “Duncan Idaho, the Swordmaster of the Ginaz.” Herbert, 65 books.apple.com/us/book/dune/id597944491.) or the ferocious combat abilities of the mighty Sardoukar! The Rapiers of this distant future could have manifested with qualities of design representing advancement in ergonomics and technology developed from centuries of development from the forms of antiquity. Advancement is unique to western martial arts as opposed to a static adherence to antique tradition of the east. As form follows function, had fire arms been rendered impotent by Holtzman shields modern techniques would have ultimately changed the design of the rapier. Had you directed a Kinesiological analysis of our modern Olympic sport, guided by the historically knowledgeable fight choreographers at your disposal, would have envisioned a rapier/sword that wasn’t just a disingenuous futuristic fantasy prop, but a functional weapon, a “Modern” Rapier morphologically forged by more than a century of Proficiency while retaining the strength and durability required for real combat. Example > lancetfencing.wordpress.com/2011/10/19/custom-modern-rapier/ < Unfortunately, I’m sure influenced by the above mentioned stigma attached to western swordsmanship, the bias for eastern swordsmanship and prop design in cinema reigns supreme and the last best chance for a depiction of western fencing as the deadly and effective martial art that it is has been lost My disappointment is not only about the physical depiction of the weapons in your adaptation but rather what this oversight discloses to us regarding the intellectual comprehension for what western fencing (escrime) contributes to the saga as a metaphor and foil.... In Dune, Escrime is a physical analogy of the mind's eye. It is exemplary of the deadly accuracy the strategy the hyper awareness precognition the expert techniques of the feint the thrust the parry and the reposté. Engaging controlling disengaging and maneuvering. Fencing is not only cognate to statecraft, but also representative of the: mental prowess, intrigue, the guile, the deceit, the misdirection, the brutality, the life taken and the life spared; a trial by ordeal, a test of courage, “Entretisser,” all actions woven into the needle wrought cerebral tapestry that is Dune. The sword is no mere cudgel used to strike wildly, hands clasped tightly, like a monkeys fist around the jawbone of some dead animal making wild gestures born of fear and hope! In Dune hope is for the weak minded. The sword abhors hope it demands the dexterity of the human hand with its manipulator and assistant's fingers deftly governing the counter balance of pommel to point with singular purpose. Its path, an abstract strategy commanded by a human mind executed with the human body, that transcends far beyond the point, to observe and assess the fortitude of the ramparts that lay ahead and create the opening where there was once an Impassable defense to finally administer the ”attack sinister.” and strike at the cynosure of that which stands in antipathy to the ideologies held sacred. With respect and admiration, Lancet Fencing

I’m finally convinced that what could make this movie fail financially will not be people who don’t know about Dune, but the purist fans who will complain about every little thing before the film even comes out.

@@LancetFencing I love Dune, and I get your frustration, but what I’m saying is that I believe it’s Dune fans that might-might-kill this movie for not having every little scene in the book. That would be impossible. The reason I made my previous comment was because reading your “letter” to Denis just made me...well, laugh. I mean, yes, you have a point, and your opinion is valid, but I don’t think most audiences-who will be the second factor in making the Dune films successful-will care much about the all that random info. It’s interesting, sure, and integral part of Dune, but do you really think audiences will care about all those big words you used? My hope is that we get a good film adaptation above all-that the basic story and tone and lore stays true to Dune, but that the films don’t bog themselves down to spew all the lore and philosophy into fan’s faces in a way that will kill the movies flow. That’s why I say I think fans could make this film fail-they want everything from the book in the movie, and forget that’s just not possible. And also, this whole letter thing is just...I’m sorry, dude, it’s kinda corny. Not trying to be mean, just expressing my irrelevant opinion. Cheers!

@@justareader____ my post is an opinion full of fact and expert opinion. your response is, an attempt to discredit through veiled agreement and an obtuse passive aggressive viewpoint. i’m sorry but the wishy washy nature of your feedback does nothing to abate the concerns expressed and certainly cannot dispel the facts within. i’m sorry if you reacted emotionally to being deemed irrelevant but unfortunately, you remain so.

@@LancetFencing I’m not trying to discredit your opinion or facts. I checked out your KZitem channel-you seem to really know your stuff. But it does bother me that a few-not most-a few-Dune fans like us will hate the movie or not give it a chance because it the worm is two inches too long or that the shields are blue or that they use katana like swords rather than rapiers. Remember, this is a film-there’s a lot that can and should be done in it, but a lot that can’t be. The story should stand on its own without needing to give all that interesting information you listed. And I get it, really I do-I have my own “frustrations” with the preview. I would have preferred a more...organic and fantasy look rather than he brutalist style Denis is known for, but I still think it looks really good, and I think and hope the movie will be good. It won’t kill the whole movie for me that it doesn’t look exactly the way I want, for instance. In fairness, you do have a point-actually a lot of good points-but the average audience won’t care, to be “Frank” 😉. The average audience will be in for a good time, but I think they’ll be blown away not only by Dune’s awesome story, but how original it is. Should it remain faithful to the book as much as possible? Yes. Should it honor herbert’s legacy? Absolutely. Should it feel like Dune and not just some cheap sci fi story? Without question. But... The most important thing is to make the movie watchable for everyone-not just fans like you who know the deeper meanings and clearly have a massive respect for Dune. Not enough people do to be honest, and your first comment actually really intrigued me outside of what I responded with. It’s clear you love this story and want it to be book-accurate, but it also needs to be a good adaption without making new audiences think it’s silly or boring (because Dune isn’t, of course). Lastly, it’s just that: an adaptation. Denis loves Dune and has loved it since he was 12, but he’s a also a good filmmaker and knows how to tell a story. We need to-as Dune fans-give him that room to tell Dune in his way while he honors the original novel. I’m also hoping this movie is successful enough to get audiences to read Dune for themselves and get all the incredible philosophy and information like the ones you mentioned about the subtleties of the knives and rapiers. That’s the awesome thing about Dune-there’s always something new, right?

There have been others who've complained it's more on the Antifa side. "It's woke" and "it's fascist" are largely opposite. Dune is a dark story with a problematic "hero." Villeneuve might be picking up on things in the book that are supposed to make us uncomfortable.

Nonsense. As a filmmaker, Villeneuve is (like Herbert was, as an author) a master of ambiguity. I am confident his adaptation of Dune will be anything but a paint-by-numbers ideological trope...

@@Jalae so you have decided before seeing any footage that you will or will not like it? That's stupid, and honestly if that's your criteria "I'll like it if it's like this movie and hate it if it's like that one" I'm pretty sure they'll be happy to do without you as a fan.
