This Orion Stratus 17mm eyepiece is a huge improvement over the stock eyepieces that came with my Astronomers Without Border's 5" reflector. The wide field of view is awesome and the image is sharp all the way out to the edge & it also with fit 1.25" & 2' focusers making it very versatile. The only thing I am a little disappointed in is it say's it has 20mm of eye relief but for me I still have to get my eye right up on it to get a full field of view, although that might just be the way I look threw the eyepiece. Overall I would highly recommend these eyepieces!

Love your videos! I own 2 of them 17mm and 21mm and I absolutely love them. I wish Orion Telescope and Binoculars still sold them its a series but they have been discontinued. You can still find them used online. I plan to buy more

I'm a little surprised that everyone talks about a much wider AND brighter view... The more glass the more loss of light (typically). But never the less... I just ordered the 17mm stratus to replace my 17mm plossl. lol REALLY wanted to get the 24mm but as you said... can't find 'em. If you google it, you do get a link at Orion, that shows the eyepiece but just says it's unavailable. Wonder if that is a supplier issue.

Where do I look for the Stratus eyepieces you demonstrated? There seems to be a shortage of them or they are 150 bucks. What is your opinion on BST oculars? They are more available and cheaper.
@AllanHall
4 жыл бұрын
The Stratus EP are hard to find at the moment, although you can get the Baader versions of them here: amzn.to/2QkCA9e These are just as good as the Stratus versions from my experience. As for the BST, I am unfamiliar with the name but they look a lot like the Orion EF series amzn.to/3l9yKhj so they are probably clones of those. Sometimes the clones are about the same as the name brand, just cheaper. Sometimes they are cheap knockoffs not worth the price. Helps if you can test them in the field at an astronomy club before you buy. Without testing, I personally would go for the Orion branded ones for $10 more. Small price to pay for the name standing behind them IMHO.

Hello Allan! Thank you for your videos on eyepieces! I’m highly interested in the Orion Stratus but as you said, they don’t seem available anymore. Is there anything comparable to the Stratus that you can recommend? Thanks!

Hi Chris, You can still buy a 24mm Baader Planetarium Hyperion modular eyepiece. They are made in the same factory are the Orion eyepieces , and the Baader eyepieces are pretty damn close to the Orion Stratus. It is impossible to find a Orion 24mm Stratus anymore and are in high demand and if you even find one you will end up paying now beyond a ridiculous amount because everyone is searching them out and paying top dollar but, The Baader is just about equal in quality and optics. And is available! I own both pieces and have compared both and the Orion is only slightly and I mean slightly better. I love my Orion but I also love my Baader and use it all the time!! Trust me on this advice, buy a Baader and you'll be totally happy! If you still want the Orion 24mm Stratus eyepiece , keep a weather eye out on the secondary market like ebay and etsy or star parties and astronomy clubs. Somebody might just be getting out of astronomy or just needing the money and will part with the coveted 24mm Orion Stratus eyepiece. Good luck!!

Hi Allan. Absolutely loving your channel and this is a fantastic video. Thank you. I can't find any Stratus eyepieces anymore in the UK - not sure if they've been discontinued. Is there another Orion equivalent?
@AllanHall

The closest to the Stratus is the Baader Hyperions amzn.to/2PWUVc4, they may actually be the same eyepieces but even if not, they are just as good and about the same price.

@@RobertWarthen The eyepiece worked in the Nexstar ok, but I saw some color fringing sometimes on bright stars. It could be from using a 2 inch 90 degree mirror on the back of the nexstar 6se. The views of planets of Jupiter and Saturn were awesome. I wish the images from it were as good.

Hi, how the stratus 17 mm will perform with a medium power solar pst scope? Thanks!!
@AllanHall
5 жыл бұрын
I would be a little hesitant with a PST as the eyepiece would be a little heavy for the telescope which could cause issues. Image quality wise, it should be pretty good. I have found that the most important thing to me for solar viewing is contrast, with central sharpness a close second. I can for example see a lot more detail with my Televue Nagler than I can with my Celestron X-Cel LX in my Lunt 60mm.

Depends on which telescope you have he has a long focal length telescope so it will magnify more I believe he was referring to the magnification the more magnification the harder it is to find the right day to use that magnification not that it was a bad eyepiece for a telescope with a shorter focal length you probably won’t see this but clear sky’s
@Krispykleenex
6 жыл бұрын
With the telescope I believe he had in this video he would have a magnification of 240 having a focal length of 1200 this makes sense why it would be more sensible to have an 8mm giving him a magnification of 150 which is appropriate to see most planets you get the magnification of the telescope by dividing the focal length of the telescope and the millimeter of the eyepiece so the lower millimeter eyepiece the more magnification but keep in mind more magnification isn’t always good research the telescope you have and find the highest useful magnification and stay a generous number below that I’d say probably 50x less and research proper magnification for planets and various nebulae and galaxies

52° is the apparent field of view. To calculate de true field of view, divide this number by the magnification.
@mikenofi281

Apparent field of view (AFOv) is independent eypiece magnification. True field is not. The 24 mm Stratuse has the same AFoV as the 8 mm Stratus.

I would look at the Celestron LX 18mm and 9mm eps. Those will give you a little wider view, a little more eye relief and a much nicer eyepiece ergonomically. While these should really make your views more comfortable and therefor more enjoyable, don’t expect dramatically “better” images than standard plossls. For the money, I think you will like them.

That would depend on a lot of things including budget, how "serious" I was about astronomy, whether I wanted to go with astrophotography or not, and how much stuff I wanted to lug around. All of that being said, I am a serious refractor guy, I love my refractors. I would probably look at a nice EQ goto mount ( goto because I am lazy and EQ because I love astrophotography) and then put something like a 100mm or larger refractor on it. If you dont really want to get into astrophotography and want something for just fun, the Celestron SkyProdigy 6 Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope might be a good choice as it has automatic alignment, goto, and a 6" aperture in a small package. Of course if you have a bigger budget, the sky is the limit!
